I was under the impression that the ports of VF, VF2 and FV to the PS2 were conversions of the Model 1 and 2 arcade games, not the Saturn ports.

First of all, there's absolutely no need for Maegawa to lie. Treasure is definitely NOT a "tiny, unproven" company, the success of Ikaruga HD and the VC rereleases pretty much speak for themselves.
Looking at Ikaruga HD and R-Type Dimensions it's very likely that MS wants them to put some serious work into RS instead of just putting up a rom image VC style. It seems Maegawa is dropping this piece of info to let gamers know because in the end it's all about money and resources. In this case particularly the money MS could pump into such a project to make it really happen.

That would be believable if not for the fact that the vast majority of XBLA releases are shovelware of the worst order and is a clear indication that there is zero quality control for that particular media stream.

While this is somewhat true .. Wiiware is far worse in terms of shovelware. :/

Yes, there are a handful of great XBLA games. XBLA is the only reason I own a 360.

True, but no-one cares about WiiWare because Nintendo don't have a satisfactory storage solution. This is mirrored in the extremely poor sales of games on that platform (Lost Winds was no.1 for months yet total sales only come to 20K).

No, you know what's *really* hilarious? That you didn't read my post properly.

I was talking about the Ketsui and DDP DOJ conversions. As would have been pretty obvious if you'd read the bit I quoted.

VF2 was a mixture of Model 2 code ported and emulation (due to blocks of code lost, reportedly). There's no question that RS is wrapped around the ST-V hardware. Porting it would be a bitch. There are basically two reasons given why we haven't seen a port yet.

1) Treasure's licensing fees are way high
2) The code isn't easily ported

I've never heard any evidence supporting the contrary. Both of the above would make Treasure suck teeth in the patented, Japanese old man way at the mention of an XBLA live port. Who knows though in this weird day and age.

So 5pb approaches MS with Cave games and MS says go to hell.

Then later MS approaches Treasure and says "Give us RSG, please?"

... Fuck Microsoft.

Microsoft specifically said that they did not want direct arcade ports (which at first is exactly what 5pb were going to do). I'm sure the "Give us RSG..." also comes with an implied "...and give it an HD graphical update." It's no wonder that Maegawa is apprehensive about it... however, I'm tired of hearing what Maegawa thinks. I'd like to know what Iuchi has to say about all this (you know, considering that it's his game).

People are too quick to be all 'fuck microsoft blah blah blah blah' etc without really thinking about it.

On one hand you have a company that is best known for DATING SIMS wanting to put ports of two games from another company that's not very well known outside of their niche. Additionally said company doesn't really have a history of knockout console sales.

On the other hand you have Treasure that has an excellent reputation that extends worldwide, and far beyond the 'niche' any of their games occupy. Ikaruga and RSG are always the 'shooters' that people who stopped paying attention to the genre in the 80s know. On top of that, they've already put out one game on XBLA that did very well.

This isn't hypocrisy people, it's common sense.

Or another way to look at it: Treasure is privileged and they EARNED it.

Because it costs almost nothing to put games on there (compared to a retail release) and they can just pull it if it doesn't sell.

You're not making any sense. You say they won't allow 5pb to publish on XBLA because they are unproven, yet they allow scores of other unknown developers/publishers to publish on the service.

it would be a great service to the community if RSG got a stateside release. It would be great if treasure would ever make that 360 original title that they put on hold, but I'm guess its better not to hold my breath.

When complaining about the crap xbla games that appear, keep in mind many of these are from regular retail partners who have strong relationships with microsoft already.

Bullshit, it cost the N+ team something like 120 grand to get their XBLA release. When was the last time they pulled something from XBLA because it "didn't sell"? Even Mr. Driller with the horrible, HORRIBLE netcode was put up on XBLA and it sold.

Basically Treasure don't have a single idea how to port a Saturn game to the XBLA and nobody knows what really went down with the Microsoft vs. 5pb ordeal, so they're just assumed hypocrites.

RS on the Saturn is not really a port. AFAIK the ST-V and Saturn are close cousins, Saturn having less memory.

Also i wonder if a 360 or PS3 could run it under emulation like SSF. It would be very demanding on system resourses. That off course would be the most profitable for them, as SNK surely knows. Though i would rather see a direct coded port or remake. Only time will tell, in the meantime keep your Saturn's and ST-V hardware.

I'm not exactly an expert when it comes to emulating hardware, but i do know that the CPU is the most important factor since it has to translate every command as fast as possible into a language it can understand.
But the Xbox360 CPU runs at 3x3.2Ghz and the PS3 at 6x3.2Ghz which should be in both cases more than fast enough for an interpreter-driven emulator, let alone one with a dynamic recompiler.

I don't think SSF is stable enough for something like this. It would also have to be pretty much rewritten for the PS3.

You can already get Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy and Alien Soldier for the PS2.
