Around 15 years ago, Hudson along with other game companies held Summer Carnival -competitions in which gamers would challenge the games' special modes for prizes and fame. Those days are long gone, but the challenge remains...

The lists show the Top 10 players only.

Format: "Your name - Score" for score attacks, "Your name - Time" for time attacks. Add " - ship used" to the end if applicable. And please use commas in your score (1,234,567 instead of 1234567). Follow the format or your score will not be added to the lists.

The idea of Time Attack is to reach a pre-determined amount of points in the shortest time possible. 5:00:00 is the "deadline", if you can't collect the necessary points by that time you've failed. So there's no need for highscore there, since the score is always the same after successfully clearing the mode, it's just the time taken to reach that score that we're looking for here.

EDIT: Played some Star Parodia for the first time in a while, added my scores on that one.

What ship did you use for the Star Parodia score?

I'm aware of Gunhed Special Edition, but since nobody seems to be playing it (ie. hasn't posted a score) I've opted to leave it out for now.

Oh, and this goes for all of you (except shiftace), please post your scores in the proper format, makes it easier for me to edit the scores in.

That's... ungodly. Impossible, maybe. 7 digits? The highest I ever saw anywhere else online is about 530k.

My normal record is 4,907,920 in 18:08:48, with I think 2 deaths.

They're mostly PC Engine games by Hudson, the first post explains Caravan Mode(s). Recca was a Famicom game and not made by Hudson.

As for normal mode Recca... I don't think I ever cleared it in over 20 minutes, definitely never over 21 minutes. All of the boss fights can be won in 10 seconds or less, especially if you use the B weapon. There's no score advantage to playing fast, though, because you get 100 points for eating a bullet and 5 points/frame for not firing with a fully charged bomb (also, 1 point/frame while the bomb charges, which takes 128 frames). I found all this because Recca was the first shmup I played very seriously, and I played the hell out of it for several months, so I got to observe a lot.

Some day... maybe I'll break 525k score attack. Or 4 minutes time attack. Or maybe write an ST.

I played the game very seriously during 1 week for the oldschool competition. I studied the score attack level.. I was lucky to have some free time at that point, so I could play for many hours in each day.
After that, I still played the game for a while, I even thought about writing a faq for it... but then I just didn't do it

Does the time keeps running after you finish the game, while showing the credits? If it does, then maybe this can explain why my high time

That last boss is crazy ,isn't it? The first time I got into it, I thought "HELL, that's IMPOSSIBLE!"

The timer does stop about a second or two after the final boss dies. And yes, it's an amazingly brutal opponent. Usually, if I get there with 2 spare lives, I can just outlast it, since it has low armor. But with less than 2 lives, my chance of success drops to about 10%. Are there any other games where a boss moves faster than you do, all the time?
