Nintendo Changes Logo

Post by Ceph »

It's now grey. (I kid you not)

http://www.nintendo.com/

What, you don't think grey sounds like fun and excitement?
I think it fits the level of creativity that has befallen mainstream gaming pretty well. Way to go, big N.

Not really sure what to think of this.

From a graphic design standpoint, I say it's a stupid idea. :P Yea, lets take contrast away, that'll work.

Yeah, it´s grey now, because it lost its blood. That´s the message I´m getting.

And you know what else really pissed me off? That they killed the Gameboy name. I mean, seriously, that´s what consoles used to sound like: Gameboy, Genesis/Megadrive, Master System, Gamegear, Saturn, Dreamcast. Now Nintendo gives us names like "Wii" and "DS" ("DSi" is even worse - you can smell that they were just a tiny bit away from actually calling it "iDS"). It just sounds stupid saying it. "Gameboy" or "Super Nintendo" had some punch to it, and actually sounded like videogame console names.

And designwise, the Wii and it´s Wiimote plus condom looks like something you´d find in a hospital. Stuff is becoming so sterile... I mean, even Apple realized that white plastic everywhere starts to be annoying and switched over to aluminum and black. That the Nintendo logo lost its punchy nice red to a dull bleak grey is more depressing than I thought it would be.

Give me something in black plastic with an agressive sounding name and a rad dude in MC Hammer pants, mullet and 80ies shades playing it with an overexcited face, not some family sitting in an Ikea room waving bits of plastic around while playing nonthreatening games where everybody is a winner. But then again, Nintendo never was the "cool" brand.

So is this an official permanant change or is it just a grey logo to fit with their current website color scheme?

It looks decent in the wii-white context.

And it's at least not as bad as Konami's new logo.

Oh god, check this out:

http://www.nintendo.com/
http://www.apple.com/

See that bar on top of both sites? See how they both have these "big buttons"? And that rounded searchbar to the right? See how both have the EXACT SAME FONT? I can´t shake the feeling that Nintendo is jumping the Apple bandwagon a bit too obviously here :?

When you play the Castlevania Double Pack on the GBA you´ll get the joy of seeing both the old and the new logo within the span of a few seconds. It´s not pretty. The old logo had a nice "tiny wave" symbolism to it, which reflects the company name. The new one is just some random font on a red bar - not only is it duller, but it actually misses the whole meaning the old one had.

Not to be the devil's advocate, of course I prefer the old logo, but the new one kinda retains the "wave" idea since the red bar ends in a slight curve. it's subtle but it's there.

Nes was gay..I mean gray! So from my point of view it's just back to basics. Never liked Nintendo that much anyways.

90% percent of new Nintendo games are mainstream grandma shovelware, so I couldn't give less of a shit.

The DS releases lists are even more depressing. "Let´s play Mums", "Bratz Kidz Party", "Petz: Horsez", "Let´s Imagine: Figure Skater"

It's gray now because they've bled all their franchises dry?

Looks like the logo finally arrived outside of the EU.

It's been a while since they changed it for Nintendo Europe. :/

I remember seeing this on kotaku a couple months ago. Kind of old news.

I also prefer the red logo but whatever, I don't get what the big deal is.

Looks like Nintendo finally accepted the fact that they've been dull lately and thus, changed the logo to grey to reflect that.

Opposed to faceless names like:

The 360

The PS3

The PSP

At least with the latter two, they stand for something; but I'm just making the point here that no consoles have had the names they should have had. I mean, the DS should be called the Uber-Dual-visioned-gameboy-advanced 2! The Wii should be called Super GameCube with wand accessory. I don't know what the 360 should be called, but gawd, anything would be better.

So yeah, nintendo has been stealing their graphic design ideas from Apple. Isn't everyone?

Some of the Imagine games have sold millions, which makes me want to castrate anyone who buys that garbage. All the while legitimately great games sit on the shelf untouched. The world is a sad place.

Not sure what the point would be in re-branding, though it's just a color change, not a full logo re-design. Doesn't make sense to me...

What's the fuzz about?

Nintendo has always adjusted the colour of their logo to fit the context. All the Stafi games, for example, start with a blue Nintendo logo instead of the red one. (I'm currently playing Stafi 5, so it's fresh in my memory). From a graphic design point of view, it makes absolut sense to make the logo grey to fit the white apple-ish environment.

Oh, and I prefer the new Konami logo to the old one by far. (I even think the very old one was better than the classic one.)

EDIT: I just checked and found out that the logo on my Super Nintendo console is dark grey. Shocking, I know.

So what, the Sega-logo on Mega Drive is white, and it's grey on Dreamcast. However, the official color of Sega's logo is blue. Just like Nintendo's used to be red, as can be seen on the box of a Super Nintendo (and the boxes of all their (western) games & systems until recently). Pretty pointless to argue about this. And now it's officially grey.

Hah, I tried this game and made potato salad, it tasted horrible. I don´t know if I can fault the game for this, though :? Had some interesting videos on it, especially one where someone takes apart a small squid. I almost had to throw up when I watched that, there was some disgusting slime coming out of it.

On the other hand, it shows complete idiots like me how you cut onions (one of the things I never can get right) and how to boil water. The food selection was all over the place, and for being an international cooking program I missed some foreign staple foods like indian daal. Overall I think it was one of the better "lifestyle" programs to come out (I kinda liked that you get stamps for each meal you made, it had a similar "keep track of everything" feel to it like Kawashimas Brain Train), but like most of these "games" you´re much better off with a real cook book. At the very least it got my interest in learning to cook renewed. It sure made a lot more sense than Wii Music or Wii Fit.
