Playstation Home is Ready
I think it is worth everyone's free tme to at least see what it is all about.Frederik wrote:Yeah. The question is not whether or not this is worth your money, but if it´s worth your TIME. Otherwise all free browser flash games would get a 100% rating because they are FREE. You don´t have to buy the right to criticise something. (Note that I wrote "criticise", not "complain".) If you like it, then that´s good, and even better that you got it for free. It´s just that this argument doesn´t make much sense to me.
As for the FREE argument. So you see no difference between you buying a really expensive pcb $500 and you find out it is shite or broken vs. a free service that you don't really like that much.
Something that is free is never going to be super duper awesome.
Namco is not going to port Wangan Midnight MT3 dx for the ps3 and sent free copies to random addresses.
But Home is not a game anyway. It's just like how I imagine Second Life was.
So what are your arguments then? I've spoken mine.
I hate Sony for alot of reasons but this makes up for it a weenie bit.
You see no fun in having a game of pool with another forum member or a friend or a game of bowling?
Heck, we shmup members could form the first posse and terrorise other clans.

We simply will block certain entrances and charge a fee for members to be able to enter their store. haha, mafia.........
^^^ I play games to escape my reality. Not to be reminded of how boring life can be, how much some people will dislike me regardless of how I dress, how nice I try to be to others and the like. I want to be the knight in shining armor, the lone commando carrying out black ops, the outcast redeeming himself through heroic deeds. Not a metro-sexualized, Mark Ecko-ed, 3D-version of a Daria-inspired chav. Don't we have the Sims for that already?
I've been doing that for free in Yahoo games since 2002, and I didn't need a PS3 or a PS2 for that.D wrote:You see no fun in having a game of pool with another forum member or a friend or a game of bowling?
Sorry, you need to pay 2.99 more a month to be able to do that.D wrote: Heck, we shmup members could form the first posse and terrorise other clans.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

So did IGN in their impressions:Turrican wrote:Eurogamer pretty much destroyed the thing in a recent article:

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/938/938179p1.html Really, it looked like nothing more then a blatant Sim's knockoff to me when I first saw it (I'm surprised Sony hasn't been sued), and it's just one more bad decision by Sony this year, along with taking out backwards compatibility.
If people want to interact like that, they will get a Sim's game.

This sounds better at least (only confirmed for Asia so far though);
"a new Namco Bandai space, which will include lounges for Tekken, Soul Calibur, Ridge Racer and a classics museum where you can play Galaga, Xevious, Dig Dug and Pac Man on arcade machines"

EDIT - I guess I should have read the rest of this thread, as the Namco arcade stuff has already been mentioned. Anyway...

I remember when playing shenmue on the Dreamcast how it was the best thing that you can play hang on and outrun in the arcade. PSN home is on much more powerful hardware. If Sony could get advertising in that place it could pave the way for extremely exciting things to do in there.
The Beta is just showing you the KINDS of things you can do in there.
How do you know in 3 months time Ketsui won't be an arcade game in there? How do you know Tecmo won't release striptease beach volleyball with porn stars? How do you know that Millionaire won't make a show to be played in PSN home. How do you know anything?
I'm waiting for RC helicopter to come out, just so I can smash some apartment windows.
Bashing something that has endless possibilities on day 1 is like telling Einstein he can't even walk on day 3 of his life.

Before starting up Home on the PS3, there's a statement saying that block of 3,077MB will be dedicated to utilizing Home program exclusively. That is some serious space if one uses a PS3 with, say, a 20GB HDD. One can buy a USA region PS3 console with a 160GB HDD for $499.99 USD right now in retail stores.

WOW, I'm really impressed with Home now that I've seen this review:

I rescind my previous comments; Home actually does look pretty cool IMHO.
The thing that really gets me about the PS3 is that NO models for sale now offer any backwards compatibility, and that's pretty ridiculous when you consider that there are over 2,000 PS2 games. I'm not asking for 100%, but there should at least be some!

Thanks to SCEI for removing the PSX/PS2 backwards compatibility on current gen PS3 consoles for sale. If you scored a first generation produced USA region PS3, it does have that ability to play 'em. ^_~dave4shmups wrote:WOW, I'm really impressed with Home now that I've seen this review:

Why cut corners on later production PS3? Sony is still losing money cranking them out on the assembly line. It's the software lineup, that SCEI hopes to earn back it's intial expenses and still make a profit from the PS3 console manufacturing debacle. (Sony was losing $$$/yen when the PS2 console first went on sale back in the day -- it was through PS2 software that they were able to rake in the dough later on down the PS2's life cycle.) Only if SCEI were able to sell the PS3 within the intial PSX/PS2 intial launch price point, they would've fared much better. Just like anything else, when it comes to the latest and greatest in A/V gear, it's bound to expensive for the early first-gen adopters. (You might recall when the first dedicated DVD Recorder stand-alone machines first appeared Stateside from likes of Panasonic & Sony, the asking price was listed at $999.99 -- wait a while & the price point will eventually drop down in price -- that is a given.)

Home is a take it or leave it thing for me, it doesn't bother me b/c I'll never use it.
Just like the new 360 dashboard the only thing I cared about was the hard drive install b/c I use that for games. Netflix was a second bonus.
I'm more concerned with getting sony to optimize their development environment so they stop getting slightly inferior versions of multiplatform games in certain cases ect.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Can you atleast make your own shit in Home? I severely doubt they had the oversight to actually think far enough ahead that people might want to be whatever they wanted to, regardless of the fact that someone else might have done it. They have LBP of all things that can do basically that, why in god's name did they not think to try and incorporate some of the same tools?Frederik wrote:a dumbed-down Second Life and then pay for almost every single step I do.
This is the only thing SL really has over any other VR system, and that's it's absolutely and totally dynamic nature. There are no limits aside from scripting overhead and what the user's PC can handle. Sadly, it's marred with giant shitloads of network and graphics engine overhead that would piss off even the most retarded game designers. The graphics handling is so bad that a few transparency setups or even a few large textures brings it to it's knees quicker than a 2 dollar hooker. Even if a scene were very beautiful and hand crafted, it wouldn't help any if it rendered at less than 20 frames a second.
Shame really, I would've figured Sony would have looked at something with serious ammounts of customers as a decent inspirational source. they had the tech to do the same thing, why didn't they?

I didn't like it at all.
1. It looks bad for a next gen console, people look blocky and animate poorly. However the environment is huge. I guess that where all the work went.
2. The place is full of tweeners looking for a date.
3. Almost no one is friendly. If you see a crowd of people standing around conversing, they usually know each other. Any attempt to communicate with anyone is met with vulgarity and insults until you go away.
4. The program is "glitchy" I saw a bunch of people in places they shouldn't be like sitting on guardrails and dancing atop billboards, etc.
5. It takes up a huge amount of hard drive space...if you have a 20, or 40 gig machine, it forces you to delete other games to accommodate HD space.
Not my cup of tea. Its mostly for young people.
