GTA IV game of the year? Yeah right.

Post by Phil12 »

wtf is wrong with Spike TV? Did anyone watch the VGAs last night. GTA won GOTY over Gears 2, Fable 2, AND MGS 4. What a joke. I'm not saying GTA was a bad game, but definitely not the best.

What did you expect? I just ignore any and all awards shows like that these days. Full of nothing but tards.

The thing is that these people don't look very hard or put much effort into games that don't have million dollar releases. They latch on to the first thing they see the most hype about. They then crawl and grovel on the ground about the game in order to meet the expectations of mainstream milk-toast "gaymerz".

They just look for games with million dollar productions because after all more money means more realistic gameplay and grafix. Am I right? Eh *nudge* eh?

WRONG.

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Seriously they are so limited in their range of games that they call shmups "retro". Last time I checked, companies are still making them. ever if one only plays cookie-cutter FPS and RTS games they wouldn't know beyond the 80's and Space Invaders. In all honesty these guys play maybe 2 or 3 over-hyped genres and claim to be reviewers. Then then proceede to compare everything foreign to their limited understanding against their 2 or 3 unrelated genres.
The same way that they think the touch screen in Oto is entirely for boob-rubbing?

This is sound advise.

Take this beyond video games as well. Ignore award ceremonies such as the Grammy

This is why I avoid watching the VGAs. It's the most mainstream game awards in existence. GTA IV was pretty good but wasn't much different from all the previous ones and certainly wasn't game of the year. Smash Bros. came out in 2008, for goodness sake!

Blasphemy, I have yet to know of a new game better than Prinny this year.

Were you giving an example of another not very different, overhyped game? I sold Smash Bros and GTA IV back at the same time. It didn't even win best Wii game, that was Boom Blox. Not a single Nintendo first party game won an award. Not that there's anything wrong with that, this was a horrible year for Nintendo outside of the excellent new Wario Land (which was a 2nd party title) but that's not gonna win any awards.

This show was obviously made to promote the "New Hollywood" video games and none of this bullshit should surprise anyone, unless you're really that naive.

Shame Mega Man 9 didn't win GOTY.

Seriously. Then again it's not a multi million dollar budget game.

There was a lot of negativity from gamers about the pace of GTAIV, and the fact that progression hit a glass ceiling.
Saints Row 2, for all its flaws, offered the complete opposite and people seemed to enjoy it more.

Remember GOTY 1998 and 1999? Those were actually proper games, not this current gen bullshit.

I don´t care for any of these games, but I´m not surprised at all a gangster sandbox "run around and shoot shit up" game roughly set in New York is more popular than a game that is 80% cutscenes and only makes sense to the hardest of its hardcore fanbase.

Yeah, it´s one of the few positive reviews on Zero Punctuation recently. He really made it sound like fun.

And here are Edge's GOTY and other awards for 2008:

http://kotaku.com/5110864/edges-goty-aw ... not-really

But Turrican's GOTY is still being debated... It's a toss between Bangaio Spirits or Meraman's NDS TGM...

Edge's list is almost equally ridiculous. It's like they only played 10 games all year.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Ah, the end of the year and the annual "bitch about end of year awards" thread. Always entertaining.

No, wait. I mean always predictable.

If you like GTA style games it's a return to vice city - all the mad humour and action, none of the stuffy boring crap.
I don't like such games anyway but I had fun with SR2.

I was giving an example of the game that a LOT of people bought the Wii specifically for. It was the sequel to probably the best Gamecube game out there. It has a 93 on metacritic (above the 85 for Boom Blox, btw), and lots of reviews called it GOTY material when it came out. It's a deep and technical fighter that will see tournament play for years, guaranteed. Obviously not everyone has to like it, we all have different tastes, but this is why I was surprised it didn't even get so much as a nod during the awards. Everyone made such a big deal about it before it came out and now it seems like the stupid gaming press has forgotten about it in favor of GTAIV and Gears 2 and all the other boring crap.

Because sitting behind cover shooting enemies with very little semblance of danger is exciting.

Out of all the shooters (3rd and 1st person) out there, take all the normal shooters that require you to move around with no 'auto-cover' system and actually dodge enemy weapons fire, and then compare them to Gears which involves sticking to a wall and aiming at enemies without moving...then yes. In comparison, Gears is a boring shooter.
