Some arcade stick questions (Hori and Agetec)

Post by Blinx123 »

Hi there,

I'm new here.

I played arcade games since my early childhood but could never really pull the trigger and buy an arcade stick, till now.

There are 2 sticks I've on my wishlist so far. One is the Hori Fighting Stick 3 (PS3) and the other is the original Dreamcast arcade stick by SEGA Agetec.

My questions:

1. Is one superior to the other in any way?
2. Are there any good "USB to Dreamcast/Saturn", "Dreamcast to Saturn" or "Dreamcast to USB" converters out there?

3. Which is preferable for playing shmups? Seimitsu, Sanwa or Happ?
4. Will a Seimisu LS-40 fit in any of those both arcade sticks without modding it?

So far, so good. I hope someone can answer my questions.

1. Not sure the difference between those two, but my suggestion is to just get a HRAP. It's better than both of those. I own a Hori Fighting stick EX (360 version) and it's just not as good as stock HRAP parts. Also a huge bitch to mod (Forget about swapping parts unless you want to get dirty with a soldering iron and dremel).
2. There are several adapters, they are hard to get these days though. I have a Saturn->DC and USB->DC/PS2/Xbox adapter myself.
3. Lots of people around here swear by Siemitsu, others are fine with Sanwa. I don't think anyone prefers Happ. Note that a stock HRAP will come with Sanwa stick and Hori buttons.
4. Can't really answer this one, but a Siemitsu LS-32 will fit into a HRAP. Pretty sure anyway. HRAPs are also easy to mod.

Anyone feel free to correct me, I r noob at arcade sticks :/

Thx,

but the HRAP is out of reach for me (money wise). Especially as I'm going to buy the all Sanwa stick by Madcatz, when it's released in February.

I think I'll go with the Agetec then. The Hori I'd already ordered is delayed untill late January. Hori has some issues down here in Europe, it seems.

Ok guys,

I ended up ordering both.

My Hori (50€) should arrive today (although Amazon originally postponed the shipment until February 2009.)

The Agetec was quite more expensive (89,95€) due to it's rarity (new and boxed) but I feel it's worth it (best to mod stick, as I heard).

Now all that's still left to get is some pretty stick overlays and a bunch of converter boxes: DC to GC or USB to GC would be nice, as I bought Castle Shikigami II.
DC/USB to Saturn is a must as it's one of my favorite Arcade systems.

And last but not least a DC to USB converter is something I'm looking forward to (for some SF2HD matches with my bro Andy. I don't have to mention that he'll get the "cheaper" stick, do I? :P )

90 euros for an agetec? you overpaid by a hell of a lot, new and boxed or otherwise. you can usually find used (but in great condition) agetecs for around $50. fully modded it wouldn't be so bad of a price. is it too late to cancel that order?

I know I could easily find one on ebay but heck, most of them are sold outside of Europe and I really don't feel like paying 21% tax + customs.

But no, it's not too late to cancel it.

just to give you an idea, there was a guy on shoryuken.com who had two near-mint with box agetec's that he was selling for $55 each plus shipping. unfortunately he closed his selling thread cause he got shipped out to afghanistan. even with shipping (maybe $20) and 21% customs ($11) thats $86 total or 62.52 euros. and it's quite possible to get them even cheaper still. but if it's worth 90 euros to you then thats cool, i know i've over paid to get something that i wanted in a timely matter. if you can hold out though and check around on different forums you will get a better deal guaranteed.

I've put a deeper thought in it,now.

The place where I've ordered the stick has 2 years warranty. I think that's not too shabby (and after the disaster with my XBOX360 controller I really don't want to go for less).

Well, I think I won't even mod my Agetec in first place. At least not, if the stock parts are better than the one of Hori (I'm close to date a girl I know, so I have to keep some -- a lot -- money to get her and me some nice dinner. Much more worth it than having 2 fully modded arcade sticks ;) )

Not to burst your bubble but a DC to PS3 converter doesn't exist.

Damn, I wish I saw this thread sooner.

I hope you're satisfied with your purchase! If not, just know there are WAY better sticks out there!
