Memorable/Fun board games?

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

I still enjoy Board games occasionally, unfortunatly or fortunatly they require a second player. Give me some of your favorites. I say Othello at Kmart for 6 dollars, has anyone played this game?

I remember having fun playing Yahtzee with the family as a kid. Trouble was also good when I was even younger.

I recently picked a "Simpsons Treehouse of Horror" themed version of Monopoly that I haven't even opened yet. :(

We have this game called "Trump", it's based on Donald Trump and was made in the 80's, way before the TV show fame and everything. It's a fantastic game though (for 3-4 players), you can make negotiations with other players in the game under pretty much any conditions you want as long as you both agree with the deal. It can get pretty tense and my girlfriend and I have actually had arguments with our friends over the game. We always wear neckties when we play :D

Anyway I can't find a picture of the old box, apparently there is a new game called Trump (after the TV show) that appears to be the same game with a different board, but I am not positive.
If more 2D people would go to the 2D Gaming Forum, there would be more people to talk about 2D games with other 2D fans on the tootie gaming forum. It's 2Dlicious. For real yall

Sorry for the obvious answers, but scrabble and pictionary still rock and always will! =)
Mastermind is also very cool, played this a lot with my G/F and it was a lot of fun since we both have a... um... pretty high IQ ;)

Not really "board" games technically, but my two favorites offhand are "Apples to Apples" and "Boggle."

Dude, this was family tradition in my upbringing. We even had our own dice rolling cups we were so hardcore. Regular Yatzee is a bit more luck-heavy than Tripple. Tripple Yatzee is more strategic and levels the playing field by a long shot. Can't recall my high scores, but it's a blast.

Great game.

- We had this other game called "Aggravation." My uncle had made the board out of wood when he was younger and I think we used 6 marbles instead of the commercial version's 4 (hardcore, I know).

- Anyone play "Shogun" (the original 1986 game, not the '06 one)? If you are interested in ancient Japanese warfare and like boardgames, this will melt your face clean off. A few summers ago a group of friends of mine played this every few weeks. Super strategic, super indepth, and super fun! :D

Stratego, Risk and one of my all time favorites...

Torpedo Run!

I can't even begin to tell you how awesome Torpedo Run! was. Even my parents had fun playing it.

I play The Settlers of Catan. I own a physical set but nobody wants to play with me so I have to play online

I find it is a very well designed game that accomodates a lot of different strategies. It's also non-violent which is a plus for me :) That doesn't mean there are not any nasty things you can do to the other players though!

Unfortunately the base game is for 3-4 players, and apparently the game mechanic is a little broken when using the 5-6 player expansion. If you have a big group of people, it's probably better to have multiple 3P/4P games going on since the expansion is about the same price as the regular game.

Ahh, Mastermind... You should go online and find a Java applet with 6 positions, since I think there is a deterministic way to play the 4-positions version and always solve it in 7 steps or fewer.

Haha, I don't remember the exact maximum number since I only played it a few times before deciding it was too simple.

All I know is that the board in the common room here has way more than 7 slots for 4-positions, and you have to be really bad to use them all...

Maybe I should buy a Settlers set for the common room too...

Scrabble is the ultimate board game, as far as I'm concerned...

I do like Risk, though, especially with added goofy secretive diplomacy/backstabbing involved.

Some I enjoyed:

Image
Superfection… many are familiar with 'Perfection' but I really enjoyed this game as a child. Maybe it was the shapes or the colors, but I like it more than the original game. Just looking for this photo, it seems this game is forgotton and overlook

Image

Parcheesi… This photo is the exact version I had (might still have it at my parents home)

Image
Axix & Allies… My friend and I spent an entire winter playing this game in 1987. There was another game called Fortress America, but we really enjoyed this more.

Definitely a good one... I played this with my girlfriend soon after we met (now we've been together 7 years). It's a great way to get to know people better :D

I regularly play Settlers and St-Petersburg (my favourite 2 player game). I played Carcassonne for a couple of years, but it got old. Same for Ticket to Ride, which is a good "gateway" game to get non-players to play. Power Grid is a very well crafted game, too, deep and fun with 3+ players.

For the more common/popular ones, I always liked Stratego. I'm not into Axis/Risk because the games are too damn long and after 4-5 hours I feel prisoner of the game, which is simply not fun.

EDIT: Oh and Boggle, of course. I'm a boggle master.

Risk, Monopoly, Battleship, Cluedo, Chess and Checkers, Hero Quest...all good stuff.

But this is by far my favorite board game:

Futuristic risk + water colonies and moon territories + commander units and cards = WIN

Can you explain more in detail? Like is it just not deep or flexible enough or what? Because I just bought this today...

Trouble, Clue, Connect Four, Monopoly, Hero Quest, Battleship, Match 4, and Chess.

Thread reminds me that I’ve never tried Risk. The 2210 version looks pretty sweet.

And who can forget Crossfire. I still remember that commercial. Never had the game, though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCwn1NTK-50

...and it's still only half done. BA-DUM-TSSSHH!

Some board games I remember liking as a kid:
Monopoly
I never realized how shallow this game was until I played it again about a month ago.

Risk
Not a bad game but I haven't played it in years. It's too slow.

Fireball Island
IIRC this one is all luck, but c'mon, red marble fireballs.

Mouse Trap
Did this POS ever work from beginning to end?

I tried learning Go a couple years ago but never stuck with it. My girlfriend got some game called Blokus, it's not bad.

No, goddamnit. It never worked for any kids, ever. It only worked on the commercial.

Domino Rally was pretty cool as well. It usually worked. Except for the motherfucking rocket.

@IatneH: Carcassonne is very exciting when played with the expansions (all of them, except the dragon and the princess (broken) and the tower (boring), the last one). Before I played the game using the tower we really enjoyed it. We played it A LOT, and I mean literally a lot. With 2 players, the expansions add about 50 tiles to the bag, which makes the game quite longer, which imo is a good thing. Thing is, we just moved on, but with 4 people it's a game I would take out and play in a heartbeat. So, by "got old", I mean it did for me because I played it way too much (good thing), so I'm not saying it in a bad way at all.

Edit: If you do have the river, play with it. It concentrates the game, which is a good thing. The game really offers you lots of possibilities of playing styles. Some people are leechers, others do their own little things without bothering the others much -generally this is how my gf plays-. A balance of the 2 things is what works best. Bottom line, deep game (again, I repeat, with the expansions, traders and builders / inns and cathedrals are must have to fully experience the game) and a fun one, too. You can manage to get stuff done even if you're unlucky in your tile drawing. I can't say the same for settlers. When your dice # doesn't come out ever, you're pretty much screwed.
