After reading this thread I suddenly don't feel like so old anymore. I'm 22, new to this board and just recently few months back got myself into shmups again.

I remember playing a lot of Xenon 2 as a kid and some Tyrian later in the 90'ies. Now I'm mostly playing manic style shooters and I specially love those with fast paced gameplay. Practically I'm trying to catch up with the games from the past 10 years or so, older games are fine too and actually I prefer mostly games with plain and simple graphics. Mostly playing vertical shooters.

I'm quite inexperienced with horizontal shooters but I'd like to get into those games as well. My knowledge of the games from this genre is pretty bad and I'd like some recommendations for fast paced games with minium amount of memorization needed if someone wants to recommend any (One of the main reasons why I registered here in the first place).

If you haven't already, go play Espgaluda on PS2 or a Jamma setup.
It's a perfect re-entry to shmups.

Well, you could try any of the Thunder Force games after the second installment (III, IV, V or VI).
Some other games that could maybe please you are Hyper Duel, Border Down, Einhänder, G Darius, and Biometal (SNES).

Udderdude wrote: Have to agree, this game definitely doesn't out-CAVE CAVE. :P In fact quite a few boss shot patterns and enemy movements seem taken right out of CAVE games. The few original shot patterns I saw weren't all that great, although a few were pretty cool. The scoring seemed like a bunch of different CAVE scoring systems stitched together. I'm not entirely sure it works .. it's really easy to keep your hit counter going though.

Don't know why you say it only has 3 levels though, the one I downloaded has 5. Although the 4th level feels like it could have been removed completely and the game would be better for it. The two minibosses and the boss are all exactly the same and have the same shot patterns, except that more shots are fired for each version. Pretty lazy .. level 5 was definitely the best out of the entire game.

And man .. that music. Why even bother bloating your download size with OGG files if it could just as easily be MIDI?

And my joystick didn't work with it for some reason. :/
USB gamepad works for me, but it seems I downloaded an older, not quite finished version of the game? After I barely manage to fuck the level 3 boss up it just says I should try to 1cc the game to fight the TLB. I'll try version 6.4 and report back.

Yep, version 6.4 has 5 stages. Couldn't agree more on what you said about the last two levels. Not only do the graphics get really good in level 5 (level 4 at least has a different theme from lv. 1-3), plenty of mode 7 shit, but there's also lots of action (dude shamelessly rips off Mushihimesama and ESPrade etc.) and the music gets kinda bearable.
One thing I really think could have been improved on is/ are the many breaks in the flow when there's nothing happening for 6 seconds or so and you begin wondering whether the game has frozen. Nevertheless, despite its flaws, it's still a neat little game. I guess I'll play a credit now and again in the future.

I also have a USB gamepad .. well, sortof .. it's a playstation 2 adapter. Works in everything else.

Suppose I'd better keep this on topic and say I'm 27 and love CAVE, but you probabally figured that by now >_>;

This makes me wonder what these boards would be like if each type of punctuation was replaced with its own emoticon.

...

Come to think of it, that would be a great April Fools joke.

27 here and I mostly enjoy bullet hell (Cave), but also Under Defeat, Warning Forever, and sometimes I like to punish myself with Psikyo games.
If more 2D people would go to the 2D Gaming Forum, there would be more people to talk about 2D games with other 2D fans on the tootie gaming forum. It's 2Dlicious. For real yall

32, feel 50 this time of year, love Cave (Ketsui, Mushis, ESPrade, Progear), starting to love Raizing, dig the Darius series, Batsugun and V-Five by Toaplan, R-Type and a whole bunch of other stuff. I'll pretty much play anoything. If I say I hate it today, I'll probably like it tomorrow, so I'll stay away from what I don't like.

19, Ibara & Batsugun. I'm neutral towards most CAVE/Psikyo games, I really do like the looks of Under Defeat & Karous, I do not like the looks of how much they'd cost me + a Dreamcast (Thank you Australian dollar!)

Good call :D

I'm 31, soon to be 32, & I'm more of an old-school guy. I'm a big horzi fan, though I'm a sucker for certain verts like the Raiden series, nearly anything Compile, and a few others. Also, Thunderforce 4 (aka Lightening Force) rules all. I do enjoy some manics like the 'Pachi series & the Shiki series.

25. I prefer bullet-hell games from Cave, Skonec, Raizing, and the earlier Touhou games. I also enjoy Gradius, Darius, and R-Type, as well as Treasure's unique brand of gameplay. Favorites include Radiant Silvergun, ESPgaluda, Psyvariar Revision, Battle Garegga, Imperishable Night, and Gradius V.

25.

I can't really stand most bullet hell games. Most of my interest is centered around Takumi shmups and multi-directional shooters (though those really aren't shmups).

But, limited to shmups, Takumi or Compile all the way. At least of the games that I've played.

Blue Wish Resurrection is awesome. I just got the update and I recently learned about the wait option. With wait off it is a lot of fun!
