Gamecube Shmups? (and 3D rail shooters?)

Post by dhowerter »

Hi all :D

I have 2 main questions:

1. Are there ANY other shmups (*2D* shooters - 2D gameplaywise, not necessarily graphics wise) on Gamecube (import or USA release) besides the following? :

- Ikaruga
- Chaos Field
- Star Soldier (Hudson Selection Volume 2)
- Radirgy (Radio Allergy)
- Shikigami No Shiro 2

If YES, what is each one called? (and please mention the regions of release :)
Feel free to include any impressions / details on each shmup (the new ones, not the ones listed above).

2. Does the Gamecube have ANY 3D rail shooters? (same genre as Panzer Dragoon or Starfox)

If YES, what is each one called? (and please mention the regions of release :)
Feel free to include any impressions / details on each 3D rail shooter.

Thanks! :)

Dragon Drive came out on the Gamecube in Japan. Kind of a Starfox - Panzer Dragoon hybrid. No other shmups other than the ones you can play with a GBA adapter.

There is a Space Invaders style game involving people characters… it even developed by Taito.

Space Raiders

Any OTHER Gamecube: (import or domestic)

2D shmups? (2D as in gameplay)

OR

3D rail shooters?

OR

Top down shooters? (think Ikari Warriors, Shock Troopers or even Neo Contra)

OR

heck any good games on Gamecube (import or domestic) you'd like to recommend that involve SHOOTING? :D

Thanks!

Ah, Alien Hominid..definitely getting that one :)

As for PN 03, it has had such MIXED reviews, I am a little unsure of why those who love it, love it.

Care to enlighten me please as to why YOU love PN 03? ^_^

There's a lot to love.
When you start the game, you have to manually hammer the A-button shot for shot. That's totally awesome to get the adrenaline pumping.
Because you know that you'll get hit if you don't kill the enemies fast enough.
You can still dodge the enemies' attacks, but not while shooting.
So either tap as fast as you can or die ;)
Next thing: the presentation.
The art direction is imo great, you'll see a sterile futuristic environment and get some neat electro soundtrack.
Look at this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WcB3fOS6j0
The guy is speedrunning so it may look a bit stupid.
But it should at least show you the environments you'll have to deal with (and the awesome music!)
Reviewers didn't like it because it was "too hard" and "too short". But cmon, we're all here because we love our games short and hard.
Another thing that was always pointed out was that the leveldesign would be too repetative. Well i think it has to be, to get that feeling of an anonymous, sterile and cold future.

Is Space Raiders worth it? I haven't read many good things about it.

Otherwise, you people are starting to describe my Gamecube collection. Couple of really sweet games on that system.

Might be worth $10 to satisfy your curiosity. It's not terrible for a quick game here and there, but it has very little style or substance to speak of.

I don't like Alien Hominid, and I resent being tricked into thinking it was a great game and buying it. It really is nothing more than an expensive flash game. The art direction, though cute, constantly obscures bullets, the sound and music is dull at best, there's barely any difference between special weapons, and the game is too exhaustively long for its own good.

I'd say the game is merely mediocre, and it certainly is no where near as good as Metal Slug. People were saying that you'd like Alien Hominid if you like Metal Slug, but I disagree.

If you insist on buying it, I strongly urge you to play it a bit on Newgrounds first.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I never had any problems with Alien Hominid. the only time I had issues with it was the cube boss near the end of the game. that was incredibly fucking painful and took forever to grasp. the rest of the game was a fucking blast and I never once had issues with bullets not being noticeable. (the final boss is rediculously fun.)

I still need to pick up Radio Allergy and Alien Hominid - I'm so behind

Oh well, the wife got me a PSP and original Xbox (finally!) for Christmas this year, so I can't feel too bad about it!

I think the game is actually a bit under $10… I think I paid $7.99 plus 10% off for gamestop membership at the time.

But just as the professor stated, it is a fair game, good for moment but is very thin and does indeed lack substance. Could be better and could have been worse. but for the price, no complains

Killer 7's deinitely influenced by Sin and Punishment's mechanics. If PN:03's allowed, then so should Killer 7.

*OR* Any of the above types of games in COMPILATIONS?

(besides Midway Arcade Treasures 1, 2, and 3, Namco Museum 50th Anniversary and Intellivision Lives!)

No, neither of those are on GCN. Aside from the compilations mentioned, there's also the non 50th Namco Museum. Not a lot of shmups, but it does have the original Galaga Arrangement.

Viewtiful Joe is a nice puzzle/action game with beat 'em up-ish elements and a couple of shmup stages.

(About PN 03 btw)

Er.. I should think that if you're focusing on dancing around like a maniac dodging enemy fire, you would not want to be seismically shaking the controller by constant hammering of the A button

SO 2 questions about PN 03:

1. Is there at least the OPTION of Rapid Fire? ^_^

2. ALSO, can you use the D-PAD to move instead of the analog stick in
PN 03?
(I really want to know this - I'm a D-pad person ^_^)

Wait, you mean the normal Namco Museum (NON 50th Anniversary) has Galaga Arrangement?

What IS Galaga Arrangement exactly? (never heard of it)

Also, is it available from the start on Namco Museum GC or do you have to unlock it somehow? (and if yes, how?)

1. Yeah, you have to buy it later for your Aegis suit.
That's why i wrote "when you start the game" ;)

2. Unfortunately the D-Pad is used to pull off special moves, so you have to use the stick to run. But imo it's ok, because this game doesn't require
pixel-perfect precision like a 2D Shooter.

That's what I said (and check google or youtube and you'll see I'm correct). Galaga Arrangement is an updated version of Galaga with some fancy formations that was originally released in the arcades with updated versions of Xevious (which is in Xevious 3D/G+) and Mappy. Galaga Arrangement is available from the start (the only unlockables are Pac-Attack and Pac-Mania). There is also a completely different Galaga Arrangement in Namco Museum Battle for PSP.

One thing I don't like about the collection for GCN is that the maximum size is a slight bit too small and doesn't capture the detail of the arcade (even on a bigger screen).

There are some videos of it on you tube:

Question:
So is Mappy Arrangement and Xevious Arrangement on Namco Museum (Gamecube) or on Gamecube at all in another game? :)

Those do look nice ^_^ (especially Pac-Man even if he doesn't actually SHOOT anything ;)

Anyone know the answer to the question in my December 29th post? :)

(Mappy Arrangement and Xevious Arrangement's console versions - on Gamecube? and other systems?)

I mentioned in my previous post that Xevious Arrangement is in Xevious 3D/G+ for PS1 (the only home version) and was released in an arcade machine with Mappy and Galaga arrangements. Mappy Arrangement is arcade only, no home version.

Here is the complete list of games in the non 50th Namco Museum for GCN/Xbox/PS2:

# Pac-Man
# Pac-Man Arrangement
# Galaga
# Galaga Arrangement
# Dig Dug
# Dig Dug Arrangement
# Pole Position
# Pole Position II
# Ms. Pac-Man
# Galaxian
# Pac-Attack
# Pac-Mania

Also, here is a screen from the PS2, which shows you how messed up the game's display is (it's from Dig Dug Arrangement, but it shows the problems with upscaled and filtered collections that display the game smaller than it should display it, even on big screens. GCN has the same issues and I'm guessing the Xbox one does too):

BrianC: the non-anniversary Namco Collection for GCN has three selectable zoom levels.

Scaling is less problematic than the restriction to interlacing, IMO. Sound emulation is free of lag that plagues, say, the Midway collections.

I know this full well, and it's exactly why I said the size is too small. Even the largest zoom level is smaller than it should be. I was referring to the restriction to interlacing when I mentioned that it was upscaled and filtered (it's also why I specifically chose that screenshot). I didn't mention this, but the graphics also look distorted in Namco Museum GCN, even on the largest setting (and this was tested with s-video and component).

Actually I still use quite a bit with for the gameboy player and couple of cool gamecube games (namco, megaman collections). With the SNES style controller it's a pretty cheap retro console.

Haven't connected mine for ages. The Wii can play Cube games, but there's also a big pile of dust lying on my Wii already, just not my type of "console". Mostly using PS3 (I still have the old model that also plays PS2 games) and 360.
