How to get into SHMUPS?

Post by supreme jd »

I'm completely new to SHMUPS. I've played Ikaruga, and I've enjoyed it. I haven't beaten it yet, but I know that I'm starting to like SHMUPS. I don't know anything about the genre, so could you guys list some good games that are easy to start out on? I have a Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, DC, and PC.

There are loads of threads about the best games on the various platforms you mentioned, have a quick look or search through the forum.

if you have a semi decent PC then MAME is a must (just google it there are lots of different versions). It allows you to run dozens of arcade games on your PC including a huge number of shmups obviously.

If you have any problems getting MAME to run properly don't be afraid to ask in the hardware section, I know I had to when I started with it.

I'm sure you will find plenty you will like

Welcome.

If you plan on posting here a lot, I highly recommend reading these threads:

For recommendations on the "best" games, I would check out this thread:

Ditto on the MAME suggestions.

You can also get a PS2 (NTSC-J) with ESPGaluda. Fun times ahead!

I think we could use a sticky newbie introduction thread, because it kinda amounts to repeating the same tips and suggestions over and over again. Not that I would want to write such a thread, just an idea

The problem is that most forum n00bs like posting a whole lot more than they like reading/searching.

I'm pretty sure Frederik meant a thread with most of the very basic stuff covered so we could simply point out people to it instead of making them search around and such.

And Thats actually a very good idea.

The threads that are always linked, are the threads that are already stickied at the top of this forum... Or linked to in those stickies.

The games already mentioned are all good..

I'd also like to add:

Free PC games:
Blue Wish Resurrection
Warning Forever
Flew fighter

(All can be downloaded here - http://shootthecore.moonpod.com/ )

DC:
Under Defeat

And as moozooh already said, you HAVE to try Dodonpachi. Best way to play it is MAME, but there are also PSX and Saturn ports.
If more 2D people would go to the 2D Gaming Forum, there would be more people to talk about 2D games with other 2D fans on the tootie gaming forum. It's 2Dlicious. For real yall

Gradius 5 is excellent to start out on. Sounds like your an American with a USA PS2. So thats where I would start.

Your going to need more consoles if you want to play the very best stuff. But as suggested MAME is the cheapest brightest option since its free and you get to play some awesome shmups that aren't even out on console.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Get Zanac Neo so u can play both Zanacs. Play Gradius V as well as the Thunderforces. That ought to do it.
