On the topic of the old RE games... Problem with the old ones(not even mentioning the ones on PS have horribly dated graphics) was the control.
The REmake was a really amazing experience, but it still has those controls. So, it has always held it back for me.
Part 4 was just incredible because of the new gameplay system. Yeah, it wasn't as scary, and it was more of a "kill some motherfuckers" kinda game. But dammit, it was jaw droppingly awesome.
Best one, hands down. If the new one is AS good as 4, it's gonna be great. I played the demo, and it looks promising. I'm just a bit concerned about the chick that hangs with you all the time. Could be a pain in the ass over the long haul. Dunno.

It's also worth mentioning that the game engine of 4 was just flat out fun--in fact, fun to the point you could at times ignore the survival horror elements. There was a lot to abuse with the game, and with skill, much of it could be done with very little to no ammo. With some work you could have have your crowd control down to mostly stabbing and kicking. Personally I loved the foot shot -> kick -> stab in the face combo. It is really hard to go back to other RE games after you've played 4.
