A lot of people use HRAP, Hori Real Arcade Pro. They are somewhat expensive, depending on which you go for. Some mod them after to use a different stick and buttons, usually from Seimitsu.

Here's a pic of an HRAP that works with Playstation 2 : http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/ ... ASanwa.jpg

Its awesome. It plays even smoother than Cherry Blossom.
But currently I'm better at PCB than at IN.
It takes some time to get used to press two buttons for concentrated fire when in PCB it's only holding one button.

I think I will have a look at the other touhou games too.

Still no billing mail from paletweb by the way
Just found HimeyaShop today. Probably will buy the Touhou games from there to check the store out.

Careful with Palet, the guy is japanese so he might not reply till later. When did you place the order? After 24+ hours you can always mail them for the billing info and they'll send it. Patience is the only thing I can think of at the moment, especially, given this time of the year. I've been already warned by the post office (I'm a permanent visitor nowadays...) that stuff could get a bit delayed, even if it's EMS, which kinda defeats the purpose of an "Express" package, heh. Good luck though, hope the info arrives soon.

About Himeya, they are good too but stuff is a bit more expensive there and they only ship through EMS only. I don't have much knowledge about them but they seem quite good as well.

Arcade controllers... mmm, no idea but I'm sure a lot of people can give you a bunch of useful info. I play with a regular USB pad for the comp and the default dual shock controllers for the PS2 and PSX respectively. That Logitech pad looks quite fine. Do you find it odd, uncomfortable or imprecise?

edit: Too fast for my eyes. Udderdude already replied about controllers. Thanks for the info!

Note this is the HRAP 1, which has a slightly different button layout. You need a converter to use it with your PC.

http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Real-Arc ... 095&sr=1-3

Preorder for the 360 version. Also works with PCs, since it's USB.

http://www.amazon.com/Arcade-Fighting-S ... 143&sr=1-3

HRAP 2 SA, not sure if those guys actually have it in stock.

There are probabally other places to get it but most are sold out.

$130 plus shipping???

You can get an X Arcade Solo for only $100, and even cheaper if you pick up a refurbished one.

X-Arcade is not very good for shmups. Coming from someone who's used both. I do like X-Arcade more for fighting games though.

Actually, from what I remember, it's two buttons (fire + slow) in PCB by default either. At least that's how most people play, because it allows much more freedom (you don't have to annoy yourself with tapping, and you can slow down at will without firing — very important for scoreplay).

What's wrong with X-Arcade? I have one and my only complaint is the ginormous footprint.

Paletweb billing mail received today! YEA!

Thanks for the links. Will have to look into that.

What I like about gamepads is, that I can play laid back when I'm sitting in my couch. When you use a arcade sick you probably have to place it on a table at sit in front of it.

The movemt cointrols are ok with the gamepad.
What I don't like is to use more than one button with a it.
You have to use only the thumb to press all the buttons which is not as precise as I wish it to be. Especially when you have to hold 2 buttons at the same time. (I don't like the shoulder buttons)

So thats the big plus with an arcade stick.
One can use diffrent fingers for the diffrent buttons.
So on the long run I think I will get one.

Now checking out the links you guys posted :)

Dunno, I play using the keyboard myself, and as you can see, that doesn't cause me much inconvenience. :)

Yeah, thanks for the advice, guys =) I like dualshocks, but I despise keyboards. I just can't play like that with a keyboard, dunno =P I'll probably be sticking with dualshocks, though =/ I just don't have that kind of cake.

X-Arcade sucks something terrible. I don't even know why people are bringing it up. Use a HRAP (typically modded with whatever you want, or you can just import a HRAP with whatever buttons you like) which you can mod quite easily since they use quick disconnects and everything can be replaced with absolutely no soldering.

Or a Saturn pad (like I do) and you'll be fine.

Okay, now I'm calling shenanigans. What's wrong with the X-Arcade, other than the huge footprint? What's so great about the more expensive Japanese stick?

I have used both the X-Arcade, and a HRAP 2 SA with Sanwa stick/buttons ..

X-Arcade is not really precise enough for crazy bullet hell games. For other shmups I guess it's ok. It's very hard to tap-dodge with it. I found myself fighting with the stick more than playing with it.

HRAP is much better - the stick is more precise and the buttons are really sensitive, which helps a lot. There is no way I could go back to X-Arcade for shmups after trying an HRAP, all I had to do was try it once and I realized how much better it was. That was before I even owned one, so I'm not saying this just because I bought it and wanted to justify the purchase ;P

Ahh I have one of those and didn't have any luck using the d-pad.. I would always end up pressing diagonals by accident. Do you use the analog stick on it instead? For my computer gaming I bought one of those 360 pads and that has been working out very well for me, though I read that the quality of the d-pads on those vary.

Welcome, brah.

I'd recommend the following:
Warning Forever
Samidare (frustrating in a formulaic sort of way, but much more satisfying than Ikaruga's chaining system, IMO)
Imperishable Night (good for starting on Touhou)
Perfect Cherry Blossom (equally good for starting on Touhou; a bit more difficult than I.N.)

Also, if you have a GBA, check out the Astro Boy game. It's fucking hardcore, and a great brawler/shooter hybrid from Treasure.

Yeah. Have the same problem with the Dpad so I'm using the analog stick.
But now that I got a little better and I want to do things I wouldn't think of before I seem to get some problems with the stick when I have to move into little gaps. Sometimes it works good, sometimes I move far to much because the stick seems to have sometimes some resistance at first and than start moving.

So I decided that I get myself a nice chrstmas giift and ordered the HRAP 3 after I found out that it works with pc.
Will tell you how it perfroms after it arrives.

Warning Forever is cool. But I'm not very good at it yet. But I enjoy the huge bosses ;)

And the other ones are all on there way to me :) Hope they will arrive soon.
After my wallet has recovered from the hrap I think I will get Raiden III.
But no reason to hurry... I think I have a bunch of shmups which will keep me busy for some time.
