Snake360: out now, contests open, $450 in prizes!

Post by yyr »

Hello all,

I've mostly just been lurking lately but I figured that this game might appeal to some of you, as it's very arcade-style.

Snake360 is going to be one of the first games available on the Community Games channel, launching November 19th. It features clean, HD graphics, runs at 60fps, has time-tested gameplay plus loads of challenge and replay value. There are over 200 levels that can be played in either single-player or co-op modes, plus Survival mode, plus a Battle mode for up to 4 players, plus Internet Ranking with over 50 leaderboards.

I'd appreciate if you guys could take a few minutes to look at the info and videos over at http://www.snake360.com. I just posted a new video yesterday that describes many of the modes and features.

Oh, and btw...since I absolutely detest the n00b (and occasionally, reviewer) mindset of "oh, I finished that game in half an hour, it's too easy...why yes I used 1100 continues," there are NO continues in this game. You actually have to use skill to complete the harder levels. I figure that most users here have plenty of that, so I'll be interested in your thoughts on the game's difficulty after it releases.

If it were up to me, every shmup released would only have continues as an unlockable feature after 5-10 hours...but that's another debate for another time.

I hope you'll look forward to playing Snake360. =)

Taito font = classy
Contrast-challenged jungle background I'd expect to see in a porn Qix clone or a Brazillian "gentleman's video" - eheh not so much

Also, I definitely knew what this was from the name. I'm somewhat saddened that there's no 3D over-under tunnel element or, for that matter, much going on with the abilities of the 360 - Snake is Snake. Levels are good though.

Heh, the jungle background was actually a picture i took in Puerto Rico, darkened considerably so that you could clearly see what was going on (it wasn't always that way).

You can definitely tell that I'm no graphic artist but I was shooting for someting functional, that wouldn't get in the way...hopefully it doesn't stick out too much for you =)

There is at least one MGS4 reference in the game, folks...but you'll have to find it.

As far as the lack of new gameplay elements...for this first version I wanted to keep it as accessible as possible. New gameplay elements are in the pipe but would be coming later, if there's a demand for a second version.

Btw, this game will cost 400 points ($5).

That I respect - a brave development decision you should be applauded for.

I too expected exactly the kind of game I was greated with, and not some MGS thing!

Snake games are like dirty little secret or guilty pleasure - it's not very cool to admit you like them, but when you do get your hands on them they are pretty tricky to let go of, and this looks pretty interesting.

Best of luck with it...

Just letting you know that the game is now available.

Internet Ranking is open at www.snake360.com, using the good old put-in-a-code system! If anyone is going to dominate the rankings on the harder difficulties, I wouldn't be surprised if they come from here!

Yes, absolutely. But for some reason I still prefer the controller's face buttons...you can use A/B/X/Y to move Down/Right/Left/Up. You get digital precision with zero chance of accidental input (especially since you can turn off the other control methods in the options menu). But I've played with a stick and it feels pretty good.

Just FYI, it's also been tested with a dance pad, plus the Rock Band drum kit and guitar. It *technically* works with all three... hehe.

I gave the trial version a go, but it crashed after a couple of minutes. It returned error code 4, if that's any help.

All Community Games have a 4-minute trial. The trial ends when time is up.

Due to a bug in XNA, Snake360 can crash at the end of the trial. The full game is unaffected.

We figured out the workaround and I'm uploading a patch tonight. The new version should be up over the weekend, hopefully...so folks who download the trial after that should not see the crash bug.

Thanks for trying Snake360 =)
