Right, the Resident Evil games prior to 4 were "crapfests". How old are you?

I my self was not a huge fan of them, But i could see what they were trying to do. Res evil along with alone in the dark were the first games to build suspsnse and then suprise you with a sneak attack. If we were playing in the dark we would at least jump evem if we suspected the dogs were coming.

it helped a lot if you played the past RE games when they came out....
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I think m3tall1ca was about 4 years old when Resident Evil 1 was released. I'm not sure if playing it back then would have helped his development.

Actually I was speaking in terms of control. Note how I made a relatively specific comment on how 4 wasn't frightening at all, presumably compared to 1-3/0/CV. Though, to be honest, I have spent far more time playing 4 than any other Resident Evil game, purely because it was the best killing game of all of them, and I'd rather kill a lot of stuff than give myself a headache to get scared.

(Reminding me of the first time I played 2 or 3 when I was little and being terrified by the unstoppable onslaught of zombies right in the beginning...truck driver incident...Freaked me out >.> =P)

Oh come on. The first 3 resi's were fun for the time, but trying to play them now is painful, in this post resi 4 climate. Unless you have a fetish for pre rendered backrounds and boring fetch quests that is.

Personally the original 1st is still my favourite simply because its the shortest one, I'm sadly not into games I can't beat in one sitting anymore, I lose interest
It begins in deep space warped by evil power

m3tall1ca wrote:You have a point, but you also can't expect the kind of fluidity of movement and action you'd find in a different STG (i.e. Halo) from a Resident Evil game. It's just the way the games are designed. Even 4 was a far cry from the crapfests that were its prequels, and it was a smoothly designed game, if not very frightening...at all. If the way the game plays isn't conducive to your play style, then it's just that, a problem of opinion, not of poor design on the part of the developers. Granted I've not yet played 5, it may be different, but I played through 4 probably more times than any other game I own. It's like a vertical Cave fan knocking a Gradius game.
First of all, Halo isn't a "STG". That's just a term Japanese people use for shmups (I guess it's to identify them from FPS, as they're in the same category on most shopping websites). Secondly, Resident Evil 2 was a great game.. back in the day. The 3D controls pissed me off, and I could never use them, but they adapted to something that was easy. You pretty much contradicted yourself by saying that it's a matter of opinion, yet all Resident Evils have a traditional control scheme: walks like a tank.
m3tall1ca wrote:Bluntly, go play something else.
Well, see, I probably will. I'm pretty sure the experience I want is in Left 4 Dead, but I still went back to RE5 to check out the co-op. I felt like a dick because I didn't know the commands, and the Japanese dude I was playing with wanted some ammo. About a minute of fumbling later, I manage to give him some. He even knew how to say "thanks", which I STILL don't know how to do. These games just aren't my area. In fact I probably wouldn't even know how to play FPS if it weren't for (accidentally) ending up an internet cafe manager a few years ago. He also knew all the secrets and managed to get through the chainsaw guy on the second level.

Is the guy with the axe on the first level possible to kill? He took a shitload of damage and still didn't end up dying. Anyway, the knife isn't as useless as I thought, since you can use it in some situations like the beginning of the first level, where zombies will attempt to go through the window. But.. uh.. I have no interest in playing this game on singleplayer now that I've played it on coop.

I guess this makes all the comments about AI redundant.

I thought STG == ShooTing Game? Halo: shoot? I thought it was more of a blanket term. But yeah. Should've said FPS. Though if you say FPS, that's a direct differentiation from the RE4/5 style of play...I'm done. I wanna play Left 4 Dead too =P

Its not really a big deal that 4 wasnt scary. What is a big deal is that its not really that good a game. I did not die even once playing it my one time through it. Absolutely zero challenge. I have spent far less time playing RE4 than any other RE game. I mean, i guess RE4 is better than alot of the other shit out there but it is by far the weakest RE game outside of the outbreak shit. Havent played Umbrella Chronicles however.

Edit: Actually thinking about it it kind of make sense. RE best to worst IMO...1>2>3> Code Veronica>4. So i guess they get worse as they go. Except those first four games are all still awesome.

Lol is right.

My two cents = RE4 is not only one of the best Resident Evils, it's one of the best adventure games period.

Yes.

Its inventive, immersive, imaginative, and those scenes where the zombies break into the room are some of the most thrilling i've played in any action game.

Try playing RE4 in the hardest skill level without the chicago typewriter, not hard but certainly a bit more challenging. The Krauser fight is much better that way, good old knife. RE4 is great just took me a bit of getting used to since technically the game didn't have any virus or zombies.

When was the knife EVER useless? I got more use out of the knife in 4 then any other weapon.
You can't move while attacking and it has barely any range. Pretty useless.

You probably ended up using the knife in 4 more because you didn't have any ammo to use anything else.
No, I used the knife to conserve ammo, and it was a fun little strategy. Shoot a zombie once in the legs then run up and knife it to death.

Oh and can someone tell me how I can play the Resident Evil 5 demo just burnt onto a CD? I mean, how the 360 lets that happen? I don't get it.

That's pretty much my take. It is less bump in the night scary light the old ones. But it's still so good in it's own way, plus I can't knock them for trying to innovate. I mean that's a risk anytime but it totally works for me. I would never want to go back to tank controls.... RE4's action is what made it so much fun.

RE4, NGB and 2, DMC3, God of War 1 and 2 are my favorite as far as 3D action games go.

For all I care 5 could be the same thing as 4 with just new shit to do and better visuals and I would have been content to just have more that I haven't played before.
