I tried the demo out. I'm not all that impressed with it. The controls are basic, which is a good thing, but it still feels clunky. You're bound to run out of ammo, zombies take about 8 shots to kill, and the knife is STILL a useless weapon.
FPS games have ruined me in the sense that it now feels unnatural to play something such as this that lacks strafing. The 90 degree turning is still there, but I actually ended up trapped in a corner and couldn't get out. You don't shove zombies to the sides or anything (think Dead Rising, which managed this almost perfectly), they simply block you until you attack them with your knife, which is the only thing you can do if you're out of ammo.
As for the demo itself, you can't download it outside of Japan any more, since it's ip blocked. Unless you burn it to a cd, and suffer horrible loading times. The demo contains 2 stages to play through, and I preferred the second which throws you into an area where you have to scout out ammo and stuff. Graphically it's impressive, I just really dislike the controls.
As for the aiming, it requires really precise movement. There's no auto aim or anything like that, so you need to hit up some practice on zombies. The second stage also lets you use a sniper rifle, which zooms in with the R stick (what the fuck), you aim with the L stick, and use X to fire. Using the left stick to aim is fine, though. The dpad is used to (obviously) select your weapons, each direction being a certain weapon or item. It's pretty much a standard these days.
There's also your partner, who has pretty good AI except for the fact that she'll take ammo from right in front of you even if you desperately need it. Occasionally you'll have to help her out if she's in trouble, by shooting enemies that are on her ass, or kicking/punching them off her if you're close enough. I can imagine this will become tedious in the harder levels. In fact I'm having flashbacks to that part in RE4 where you had Ashley cranking some handle, while zombies came after her as well as more zombies coming after you at the same time. That was the point that I dropped RE4.
I don't know what to think of RE5, it feels plastic and it controls like Gears. I probably won't be buying it because this is the kind of next-gen stuff I don't care for whatsoever. The horror factor can't exist with dealing with clunky controls, and I don't think RE5 is scary at all. It's not even a horror survival game any more, just a survival game.
Didn't see any white zombies though. Perhaps they're an unlockable.

played the demo, had alot of fun with it. glad it didn't resort to a FPS.
you can strafe if go into the control options... but it's is annoying b/c when you hold down the aim button it still forces you to aim with the left stick instead of the right.
so I just stuck with the original controls...

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Indeed. I used to play the first game using nothing but the knife except for on bosses. The knife has always been a good weapon.tommyb wrote:The knife is still a useless weapon?
When was the knife EVER useless? I got more use out of the knife in 4 then any other weapon.
I may be in the minority here but i wish they would go back to the pre 4 style of play. The first few games were great. 4 was fun in its own right i guess but it didnt feel like an RE game in more than one way. I guess that is never going to happen though.
Im a massive Resident evil fan and i wouldnt swap number 4 for anything, total class that game is (just not scary)Octopod wrote:Indeed. Never say never, maybe as a sidestory. But seeing how RE4 is widely regarded as one of the best games of the last hardware generation, Capcom would be stupid not to continue in that direction.Octopod wrote: I may be in the minority here but i wish they would go back to the pre 4 style of play. You can't move while attacking and it has barely any range. Pretty useless.tommyb wrote:The knife is still a useless weapon?

You probably ended up using the knife in 4 more because you didn't have any ammo to use anything else.
Wow, I hope your post here and the other is a joke.Elixir wrote:You can't move while attacking and it has barely any range. Pretty useless.tommyb wrote:The knife is still a useless weapon?

Run out of ammo? You realize that that's usually been part of the resident evil series right? It adds to the "fear" of the game you could say, don't miss, you'll run out of bullets, make every bullet count, that kind of thing. It's not like an FPS where you just blaze your guns and jump around to avoid enemy gunfire.
"As for the demo itself, you can't download it outside of Japan any more, since it's ip blocked. Unless you burn it to a cd, and suffer horrible loading times."
The first time you load it up it's pretty bad, every time after that (unless you restart the system/exit it out) it's fluid. It'll be out in other areas eventually, and if you're really that interested (like the rest of us obviously), you'll download and burn it.
"As for the aiming, it requires really precise movement. There's no auto aim or anything like that"
This is coming from a shmup player (I'm assuming) which those games require precise moving between shots. So precise shooting is too hard for you? I don't understand.

Oh hey, you know how to conserve ammo! Meleeing them conserves ammo! You keep your much needed ammo! Awesome. Oh wait, it seems that shooting them, letting go of aim, running up to them and pressing a single button is too much effort for you to go through. AI can be questionable at times in any game (although she seemed to be fine to me), you can get the ammo she picks up from her.

Your opinion of it being a bit different of a genre (it has changed, I can acknowledge that) I can see, but you do know that the original Resident Evil games did have clunky controls? That game that kind of put these games on the map? I assume you remember the Tank-style controls of Chris, Jill, Claire, Leon, and any other characters pre-RE4. Unless those didn't have horror, and only...Well I won't assume you think any game has a horror factor if you don't think RE has one. Although I'm not too sure how a game feels plastic.

I've never run out of ammo in RE4, and I kill everything in sight. Knife is fun to use just 'cause it's humiliating to get killed with it. Also, some people don't know but in Re4, the knife is a Krauser killer. It's way more powerful than magnum shells when used on him.Elixir wrote:You can't move while attacking and it has barely any range. Pretty useless.tommyb wrote:The knife is still a useless weapon?

yeah... if anything RE4 was the most forgiving as far as ammo goes out of all the RE games. the earlier games it was almost advantageous to run from the zombies for awhile to you stock ect. I never ran out of ammo completely in RE4. I also found the knife a usable weapon... it's by far the worst no doubt but it's suppose to be a last resort weapon.Run out of ammo? You realize that that's usually been part of the resident evil series right? and aim assist? no way... I turn that off in most games that offer it.
I think bottom line is if you had some issues with 4 then you'll have the same ones with 5. I loved 4.... one of my fav action games.
If you play alot of FPS games and didn't play 4 or didn't like it ect.... it would feel clunky. On the same token I find it really annoying in FPS when I get stuck against a rock or some other random environment element that is out of my field of view do to my character being off screen.

It isn't.Wow, I hope your post here and the other is a joke.
Anyone who gets scared because they can't kill something because they don't have any ammo is a fucking retard. It isn't scary, it's called bad game design. Tell me what you're supposed to do with no ammo and zombies coming at you. Slash at them with your knife that has a 2 inch radius in a stationary position?Run out of ammo? You realize that that's usually been part of the resident evil series right? Actually it's pretty much fluid after playing through it initially. The first time you load it up it's pretty bad, every time after that (unless you restart the system/exit it out) it's fluid. It'll be out in other areas eventually, and if you're really that interested (like the rest of us obviously), you'll download and burn it.
If you played the demo, you would know that the precise aiming is ridiculous in this. You need to shoot them dead centre in the forehead for anything to happen. Gun aiming with the left analog stick isn't comparable to dodging with a pad/stick.This is coming from a shmup player (I'm assuming) which those games require precise moving between shots. So precise shooting is too hard for you? I don't understand.
The AI is so bad that even my family members said "what the fuck is she doing, she's just standing around, and keeps asking for ammo". It doesn't even appear as if she needs it, as she'll randomly start shooting at things and/or walk through them. Also, running up to them and curb stomping them isn't always an option, but when it is, it's completely unrealistic due to Capcom failing to use ragdoll physics in this engine.Oh hey, you know how to conserve ammo!
So you think it's smart for Capcom to continue using an incomprehensible and awkward control scheme to feel true to the series. I'm sure the fans will appreciate such dedication. I'd be pretty scared too if someone was trying to kill me and I maneuvered like a brick shithouse.DT wrote:Your opinion of it being a bit different of a genre (it has changed, I can acknowledge that) I can see, but you do know that the original Resident Evil games did have clunky controls? Well, I got to play this demo, and it got me pretty jazzed about the game.
I mean, seriously, you really aren't playing that much of the game at all. You're just in two buildings(and small amounts of the surrounding area) that get attacked by the zombie hordes. And you have to fight 'em off. So, you really aren't searching around and doing all that other great stuff. Just two really small glimpses in the game.
QUESTION: that girl that hangs with you...is she with you in the WHOLE game? I could see that being a bit of a ball and chain, not that it would be impossible, but i'd rather she not be with me the whole time.
Anyone know?

Elixir..... switch to control type D
I was being stupid and guess i didn't actually choose it like I thought i had before. It maps it out just like all the FPS and others like gears ect.
I prefer this set up.... if you are use to dual stick control it's perfect. It still forces you to hold your ground when firing but that's just how res evil is.
If you haven't tried it please do... I was totally willing to get use to the old way but after playing this way it's very intuitive for me.
As for the aiming I had no issue at all ect.... March can't come soon enough for me.
That chick is going to be with you the whole time unless they force the 2 players to split up alot. This game is going to be co-op the whole way through so I don't think she'll ever be far away and when she is it's just a temp thing.

Just did. It controls better but it feels like Gears of War without being able to dash from side to side while strafing.Strider77 wrote:Elixir..... switch to control type D
I ended up getting trapped in a corner against that chainsaw guy with no way out. That isn't scary, it's retarded. You can't even do anything in a situation like that - YOU'RE TRAPPED. Like I said, the knife is useless, you can't even move while reloading. Seriously, fuck this game.

You have a point, but you also can't expect the kind of fluidity of movement and action you'd find in a different STG (i.e. Halo) from a Resident Evil game. It's just the way the games are designed. Even 4 was a far cry from the crapfests that were its prequels, and it was a smoothly designed game, if not very frightening...at all. If the way the game plays isn't conducive to your play style, then it's just that, a problem of opinion, not of poor design on the part of the developers. Granted I've not yet played 5, it may be different, but I played through 4 probably more times than any other game I own. It's like a vertical Cave fan knocking a Gradius game.Elixir wrote:It's just, I shouldn't have to overlook flaws to enjoy a game. It's 2008. How can people put so much effort into graphics but not the fluidity of what the player is going to be experiencing?m3tall1ca wrote:And Elixir, you really are demanding aren't you =P
Bluntly, go play something else.
(I hope I didn't leave any holes in there =/ And I hope I'm not being so much of a dick as to piss you off, Elixir. Buds?)
