Need help IDing a shmup

Post by Square King »

OK, I'll do the best I can remembering the details.

I played this game about 14 years ago in Colorado, so memories are a little fuzzy. I think it was a Neo Geo cab. I kinda recall being able to select different games from the start.

Hori with a kind-of-cute nature/forest theme.

It's probably something I should know and most everyone will identify in 2 seconds and make me feel noobish.

It's Sunday.

Yeah, sounds like Chariot from Three Wonders.
Midnight Wanderers is pretty sweet too IMO.

It's not Blazing Star then? That would be too easy, right?

Capcom's Three Wonders PCB is a CPS1 based one and features three different games to choose from: Midnight Wanderers (an action genre based one), Chariot (a shmup based one) and Don't Pull (a puzzler genre based one).

High scores would be lost upon powering down for the night as there was no "back-up" battery to save such scores anyways. Upon being booted up the next day, the standard default high scores would appear as usual on a typical Three Wonders PCB. ^_~

What I don't get about Three Wonders is why they put two 8-way games with a puzzle game that clearly would be more fun with a 4-way joystick. So I never play the puzzle game when I put my PCB in the cab.

Old thread is old. :P

Finally got around to playing it...no dice. Very similar, though. I remember a very green/foresty background, but that's about it. :(

Are there very green forest backgrounds in Cotton games?
Maybe it's one of the Cotton series...?

I think I'd remember a name like Cotton. I wouldn't expect a 7-11 to have Cotton, either. But some of those screens look familiar...

It couldn't possibly be Fantasy Zone or Ordyne, could it?

They're both a bit too cartoonish. And I'd say this title was early-mid 90s.

Chariot looks incredibly similar to the image I have in my head, though.

It may also be Eco Fighters

but if I had to take a bet I would say Cotton, level 2 of Cotton is pretty much exactly like youre describing.

I guess it could also be Insector X

and finally in the pretty damn obscure category theres Black Heart:

Sounds like Three Wonders. Did you happen to be playing the Midnight Wanderers game, by any chance?

It's already been said that it isn't Three Wonders.

But there really isn't much that fits that description. It may very well have been the platformer he was playing, and not Chariot. It's worth a look to see.

That's what I thought too; memory can play tricks.
Multiplay arcade games are few; those from the right period that include a forest-themed shmup not at all unlike Chariot can be counted on the fingers of one finger, unless there was some rarity that nobody around here knows about.
Or unless it wasn't a multiplay game after all.

Prehistoric Isle in 1930 or Prehistoric Isle 2. The first was arcade but the second was NG.

Zed blade was another but thats not Cutesy.

Boogie Wings is another rarity. I don't think any of those were multiplay unless they were on the NG system

Thanks guys. I'll delve more into these options after final exams. It probably was the platformer.

EDIT: Already suggested, I see. Sorry 'bout that.

Random guess here, but could it be The Great Ragtime Show/Boogie Wings (Data East, 1992)? I really can't think of much else...
