Forced scrolling platform games
Every other level of SD Gundam Psycho Salamander is auto-scrolling. There's not much platform action there though. It plays more like a (very) poor mans Metal Slug.
The second out of three segments in each level of Ufo Senshi Yohko Chan is also and auto-scrolling platform-shooter part. Once again the game is rather slow and lacklustre.
Both are arcade games.

Wolf Fang for the Saturn looks pretty intense:

I like the way it changes the direction of scrolling every so often. I actually implemented this in my own game yesterday.

Isn't the PCB version of this called 'Rohga Armor Force'? I think it's the same game.320x240 wrote:Wolf Fang for the Saturn looks pretty intense:

Anyway, played this a couple times in mame; It's good. Very challenging game.
Cool thing about it is the mech customization, for example you can change the lower body from bipedal to tank and there's a ton of different weapons.

Yes it is. Ironically, I downloaded this game for Mame earlier today but never got around to playing it. Out of the six or so games I have downloaded today, three have been auto-scrolling platform shooters. Must be karma...ZOM wrote:Isn't the PCB version of this called 'Rohga Armor Force'? Re: Forced scrolling platform games
so i kinda just realized that this is a real subgenre with lots of games in it. psycho salamander is cool, and suggesting it's a "poor man's metal slug" is troll logic... it's like saying cabal is a poor man's time crisis
i think it'd be fair to consider most of these shmups. i don't think anyone would argue that moon patrol isn't a shmup, and stuff like demon world/psycho salamander/wolf fang are more or less the same thing. besides, we have stuff like starfox now, last i checked... i don't know

<S.Yagawa> I like the challenge of "doing the impossible" with older hardware, and pushing it as far as it can go.

The first scrolling platformer was one of these: Jump Bug! Fun game.
I guess Gumshoe should count. Light gun control is unconventional, but it's definitely a platformer of a kind.

IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Rescue Shot Bubibo is another unconventional lightgun scroller.
Vib Ribbon also comes to mind. Though both of those games have obstacle elements moreso than platforms.

The SMB Game & Watch is an autoscroller, though you still have to move forward to progress. Fun game, especially using the code to start on a higher difficulty level.
