CAVE (Computer Art Visual Entertainment)

Post by rtw »

For those who did not know CAVE is an acronym for Computer Art Visual Entertainment

Since it's an acronym we should spell it like this: CAVE :D

Entertainment Visual Art Computer :D

or

Evil Video Anarchist Corps ?

AFAIK acronyms do not need punctuation as long as upper case is used.

Acronyms are also supposed to be read as "see-ay-vee-ee", right?

Cave themselves seem to spell it as "Cave" almost everywhere, except when they write the full company name "CAVE CO., LTD.". So be it.

Normally if an acronym can be pronounced we will pronounce it but if it's unpronouncable we will only use the letters i.e.

NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization
CNN: Normally pronounced using the letters i.e. Cee Enn Enn

CAVE, NATO, AIDS, etc are acronyms as they are pronounced as complete words.

INH, BBC, CNN or any other unpronounceable combination of letters is referred to as an initialism.

It's Japanese... everything is an acronym or abbreviation. We still dont' spell them in upper case (Sega, Capcom, etc).

Wondering whether they were C.A.V.E. to begin with or whether they picked up on it later.

There is the arcade developer, Afega, which is short for: Art-Fiction Electronic Game to consider as well. ^_~

Aye. I may be getting my wires crossed here, but I remember there being a distinction between acronyms and other forms of 'initialism'. I think it's only an acronym when it does form an easily-pronounceable word, as CAVE does.

Yeah, that's the primary definition, though it's apparently not incorrect to refer to initialisms as acronyms as well.
