Ninja games!
Ninja games!
After talking about ninjas for a bit in another topic, I felt like talking about them exclusively.
So, what ninja games are there? Yeah, I realize there are TONS of them, but here's the ones that come to my mind...
Shinobi series (including Kunoichi)
Tenchu series
Ninja Five-O (which I still need to get -_-)
Inindo: Way of the Ninja (SNES)
Ninja Spirit (TG16 / PCE)
Iga Ninden Gaou (PCE)
Ninja Crusaders (NES)
Wrath of the Black Manta (NES)
The Last Ninja (various)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games (this is a stretch, I know, but c'mon :wink)
The Ninja Warriors (and the sequel)
I know I'm missing a ton. Help please~ C'mon folks, let's talk about our favorite shuriken and kunai throwing stealth masters!

I've never played Hagane, Kaze Kiri, Ninja Five-O, or Iga Ninden, but the Ninja Gaiden series (especially the first) pwns all of the rest of the games on that list. Except for the PCE port, which is a travesty.
Back in '89 when it came out, it was the fucking raddest (yes, RADDEST) video game I'd ever seen. I begged my mom to get it for me, even if it was one of the "expensive" ones ($44.99)
. The rest of the neighborhood kids were always trying to borrow it from me. I have 2 and 3, but those didn't have the same impact. Maybe it's because I was a lot older and well past my ninja phase when I played them.

Everyone, stop what the fuck you're doing right now and give Shadow of the Ninja a play on the NES. thank me later.
Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja had a healthy dose of Ninjas.
Ninja Commando had ninjas fucking shit up modern day style
Ninja Master's was total ninja on ninja action
the Goemon games are all about ninjas fucking stuff up in cool and funny ways.

Legend of Kage was the first NES game I ever bought. It is tough as nails (or at least it was when I was 8) but I liked the pseudo-sequel Demon Sword even more.Bar81 wrote:A friend of mine swears by Legend of Kage.

You're arguing for a universe with fewer waffles in it. I'm prepared to call that cowardice.
I realized I missed Gaiden right after I left the house after making that post.BUHA wrote:NINJA GAIDEN

Ahh yes, Kaze-kiri, a good mention. Same with the Neo-Geo Ninja games. I forgot about Garyu as well - that stars ninjas too. Legend of Kage and Demon Sword are also both excellent. I loved Kage as a kid.
Goemon doesn't quite count since the main character isn't a ninja... I was sort of going for games where you -are- a ninja. Yes, there is a ninja in the later games that you can play... but it's still not quite a ninja game. The SNES Goemon games are excellent nontheless though.
About Ninja Gaiden again - if you've never played em, go try out the Game Gear and Sega Master System Ninja Gaiden games. They're not made by Tecmo (unless I'm horribly mistaken), but they're actually pretty cool. Not as good as the NES ones, really, but still a load of fun.

Demon Sword was awesome. Just flying through levels whippin' ass was fun as hell.
There was this ninja game on the NES where you could transform into an animal pending on what weapon you had (ball and chain = scorpion, sword = dragon, etc.), but I don't recall the name of it. I think it may have also wound up on PC-Engine...?
And Ninja Warriors is the one with the cyborg ninjas right? Gah, that game was fucking great.

Ah, thanks!

That game was pretty fun if I recall correctly. The underwater city level was great. Think I made it to the last level but never got past that...

God Ninja Crusaders was so fucking hard. I remember one day when I was 12 I sat down and determined not to move until I beat it(found out how durable NES controllers were). Best weapon was the ball and chain, you could change to a scorpion that nobody could hit and had good range and swimming power. Of course you could barely jump, though...
My cousin and I always fought over who would get the Bo...and thus become that kickass dragon. We did eventually beat that thing. DAMN YOU AIRCRAFT CARRIER STAGE!!Dewclaw wrote:God Ninja Crusaders was so fucking hard. I was always the scorpion myself. Just an all around solid weapon.
I think the Bo turned you into a dove or something. It was the sword that turned you into the dragon, albeit it could only do it once, which sucked. The only other thing I remember is that the Shuriken turned you into a tiger.
And yeah, the latter levels in that game were damn hard. That fight with the UFO was just "WTF!?"

Legend of Kage got a sequel? I used to love this game on MSX, I played it too much... it was one of those games that I finished dozens of times just because I really liked it.
You guys are forgetting Tenchu... the games in this series are very very good stuff.
And everytime people talk about ninja games, I like to talk about that one, not because it's great (Tough it's a nice game), but because it has the most difficult name to memorize ever.

I forgot about Strider since Hiryu doesn't really look much like a ninja... but yeah, according to the descriptions of him in the instructions along with some games he's done cameos in (Marvel Vs Capcom 1&2 are the ones I'm thinking of IIRC) do indeed call him a ninja. I guess he falls somewhere inbetween since he acts sort of like a ninja, but doesn't look quite like one...llaoyllakcuf wrote:reallybut he's NOT a ninja.
I always thought he was; his movement and appearance
seemed ninja-like to me.
(but I guess that doesn't exactly make him a ninja)
We'll count him in since he kicks ass anyway.

Oh god, Kasumi Ninja... without a doubt, the worst ninja game EVER. One of the worst fighting games EVER. The controls are about as responsive as a deaf catatonic mute in a coma.Kasumi Ninja
