The mighty Bal-Sagoth are my favourite band, though they're not exemplary of any easily-pigeonholed genre. Not into many other 'symphonic'-type bands, either; that they tend to be so damned derivative and make space and hyperlaserbattles induce a yawn is quite a feat.
Demilich are probably my favourite death metal band, although I'm really into all of the 'stock' DM bands, too. Like quite a few people here, I grew up on Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel and Suffocation.
Sigh are another favourite, but this week I have been mostly listening to Direwolf, Ghoul, Discordance Axis and Jaldaboath. Tasty!
PS - While we're name-dropping, Chris from Alestorm is a bezzie.

What band on Robotic Empire is your friend in? Robotic Empire is one of my favorite labels.Acid King wrote:
Nah man. Everybody knows somebody. Today I got a call from a guy that used to play bass in an old band of mine, turns out his new band was just featured in Decibel, has an album out on Robotic Empire and is about to go on tour in Europe. Now don't I feel like a loser?
I loved your comment about the hippies in Wolves in the Throne Room and that emo pussy Xasthur, you're so right.
I love black metal, incidentally I love both Xasthur and Wolves in the Throne Room. Weakling is really good, Deathspell Omega, Mutiilation, Drudkh, etc.
As for doom metal, Boris, Sunn O))), Black Cobra, Nadja, Asva, Khanate, etc. I love doom. I saw Boris with Torche and Nachtmystium, and it was amazing. Speaking of that, anyone see that Torche's "Meanderthal" won album of the year in Decibel?
A friend of mine tried showing me them and all I could do was laugh.Bal-Sagoth wrote: Demilich are probably my favourite death metal band, although I'm really into all of the 'stock' DM bands, too.
Personally I think the 2 best albums are the last 2, but then it depends what kind of music you like, the early Nathrakh stuff is a lot more raw, certainly production wise, the later stuff is brutal but with some melodic stuff in it. Domine has some great songs on it but the production isn't up to the newer stuff. It's all good tho (of course I have to say that).gabe wrote:You'll have to forgive my general unfamiliarity with all things Metal...
Can anyone recommend a good Anaal Nathrakh primer?
I seem to be reading a lot of good things about Codex Necro... There also seems to be a good deal of hype surrounding Hell Is Empty, And All The Devils Are Here on the net... but that may simply be because it is the most recent release?

I like doom and some death, no melodeath or deathcore though. Not really into black metal, I kinda like some of the music but I really don't like the "dog in a blender" style of vocals.
In death metal you can't always understand what they're saying but you can at least tell they're trying to say something. Black metal vocals just sound like hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh groaaaaaaaaaaw hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh to me. Plus there's the whole issue of the rather mixed up ideology a lot of black metal fans and bands subscribe to.

99% of NSBM bands are fascinatingly bollocks, though. Absurd, for example, sound like a 10-year-old arsing about on his new Cash Converters guitar; you couldn't leave them playing long enough to take offence.FIL wrote:Plus there's the whole issue of the rather mixed up ideology a lot of black metal fans and bands subscribe to.
I dunno about anybody else, but if I wanted to musically propound ideas of white superiority, I'd make sure I was half decent at my chosen fucking instruments, first.

Nice pick, but not too keen on that album. First few Torche releases are great, but they're getting VERY poppy. As for doom metal, Boris, Sunn O))), Black Cobra, Nadja, Asva, Khanate, etc. I love doom. My band.
Mainly psyched out/freakout inspired, but we have lots of stoner rock songs and some straight up doom that would appeal to some of you. Just haven't gotten around to doing a proper recording of most of it.
They're called Gods and Queens. I'll wind up buying their CD to support them, though they're not exactly my cup of tea.tommyb wrote: What band on Robotic Empire is your friend in? Robotic Empire is one of my favorite labels.
I've never actually heard any NSBM, but after reading a review I searched out mp3s of a white supremacist death metal band called Arghoslent and they actually weren't that bad. I'd never give them a dime of my money, but the racist fucks sure can play.Bal-Sagoth wrote:

Theres this band I heard the other day that reminds me of Wolfbrigade with a HUGE black metal influence but I can't remember what they're called.
You should check out Mourne and Man the Conveyors.

Dunno about now, but they were pretty progressive/power metally when I heard them oh so many years ago.lilmanjs wrote:blind guardian are speed/trash metal, right?
Reminded me of Gandalf and that other band everyone likes now days. Dragon something. They were in Guitar Hero.
Anyone like Mastodon?
Some songs I've heard I dig, but I just can't get into them. When I listen to Mastodon, it makes me want to listen to other bands.

I'm a pretty big fan of Remission, and spent a good bit of time listening to Blood Mountain after it was released a couple years ago. Never really got into Leviathan for some reason.
This is a stupid statement. Essentially, black metal is emo, it's just a different kind of emo. Say, extreme emo with satanic elements with anti christian sentiment running rampant. Then again there infinite ways to describe black metal.Django! wrote:I really dislike most Black Metal. A large majority of what I've heard is amateurish and uninspired.
This includes some of the "big names in Black Metal" now days. Including those douchy hippies Wolves in the Throne Room and that Emo Cunt Xasthur.
Some people have different types of hatred towards different things. You think that hatred is only limited to "evil" when in reality, all hatred is still a form of hatred, and it is negative energy in itself.
I don't see the relevance of saying that someone isn't true enough because they don't go around burning down churches or killing some dude. Besides, originators in black metal didn't run around lighting churches on fire and killing people, it was always just music that was supposed to be dark and have a certain atmosphere.
Saying that Xasthur are emo is kind of stupid. It's still black metal, just different. Listen to Shining for example, they are suicidal black metal, but they are really good, and I guess you would call them "emo" because they suffer from mental illness, which is really ignorant on your part. Still, they create some despairingly crushing, depressing black metal. I'm assuming you don't understand the pain and torment of being mentally ill. It's not fun. I know.

Haha, that's kind of the gimmick about black metal. Anybody can play shitty music with shitty recording equipment and consider themselves "Black Metal". Black Metal is a joke nowadays, not in the sense that it's full of sick fucks or "evil" people, just that even the "evil" people can't play awesome music.Bal-Sagoth wrote:99% of NSBM bands are fascinatingly bollocks, though. Hey, that's crazy. I had a friend who really like your stuff. I didn't know shmups people were in bands too. My friend loves Emperor, I really never caught onto them though.barmskii wrote:I play guitar for Anaal Nathrakh, does that count??
I do still like a bit of death/black metal - emperor are cool and I love Necrophagist and Cryptopsy. Mostly into to more progressive stuff these days, Meshuggah, Cynic, Dillinger etc.
Plus you can't beat a bit of bill Bruford and Barry White.
Xorthen, Django was talking about the way Xasthur acts in interviews, not that his music was emo. Here's the quote from earlier when I aksed him where the comment came from
I've seen several interviews where he talks about how he can't work with other musicians because he's such an asshole, how he hates people and humanity, how dark he is, etc.
Then the interviewer asks him about his wife and his kid and he proceeds to throw a hissy fit of epic proportions.
LEAVE MY WIFE AND KID OUT OF IT!!!
Then he complained and whined about how he didn't get proper dues when Sunn's Black One exploded them into the indie world (he provided vocals on it).
Guy wants to be a portrayal of dismal solitude and hate for humanity and works a day job with a wife and a kid and whines about not receiving "his cut" when a band he guests with makes it big.
Guy's a proper Nigel. Total falser.

I reserve the right dislike a band and not listen to their music if I find the band members to be huge cunts.I don't see the relevance of saying that someone isn't true enough because they don't go around burning down churches or killing some dude. Besides, originators in black metal didn't run around lighting churches on fire and killing people, it was always just music that was supposed to be dark and have a certain atmosphere.
Actually, I would call them emo if they dressed up in corpse paint and whined about how shitty their lives are to a magazine.Saying that Xasthur are emo is kind of stupid. It's still black metal, just different. Listen to Shining for example, they are suicidal black metal, but they are really good, and I guess you would call them "emo" because they suffer from mental illness, which is really ignorant on your part.
Like Xasthur.
Speaking of douche bags, those guys from Katatonia are full of themselves. They treat their fans like shit. Bunch of cunts the bunch are. And, interestingly enough, I find that most metal heads are full of themselves. So I don't get along with most of them. Too full of their own bullshit. Xasthur is really a wanker, but I doubt he's as bad as Varg or those NSBM assholes.
Me too. I think they're easily the best quasi-mainstream metal band and a good balance of what I like to hear with catchiness. Their vocals suck, though. And with all of the other silly crap I listen to, for some reason songs about woolly mammoths sound really Raffi-tarded to me. But I like them all and look forward to the next.gabe wrote:Hipsters LOVE Mastodon:
Mastodon USED to be good. Fuck blood mountain.
The berzerker's "Dissimulate" was really good, but not too keen on most of their shit. Their drummer is insane though.
And Gods & Queens...yeah. Not my cup of tea.
EDIT: and on the topic of people we know in bands, my friend Jeff who used to play for Heads Will Roll (old local michigan rock band who went on tour with dillinger) now plays guitar full time for dillinger. Seeing him on Conan O Brien with them was fucking weird.

From my experience, you will find these types of eccentric personalities in every "scene."
Which, actually reminds me of this link:

WOW now that is a claim to fame, Dillinger are super awesome!!!tommyb wrote:

Next time you see him tell him he is an insane guitar player from me!!!

Fuck I gotta ask my friend what this band was. It was like d-beat black metal to the extreme. It ruled.Octopod wrote:tommyb wrote:Oh, and you were right. Morne rules.
There is some blackened crust like Skarp and Iskra. They dont really sound like Wolfbrigade though. I dont think i have ever heard anything that sounded like D-beat and black metal combined.
Darkthrones later shit has some crust influence.
