Best console for shmups?

Post by IronGiant »

So which console has (or had?) the best range of shmups, whether they are originals, remakes or emulated?

Presumably either the XBox 360 or the PS3 ?

Well, the:

PCE had the most.

PS2 had DOJ, ESPgaluda, Ibara, Mushihimesama, Gradius V, the first two Shikigamis, PSOne backwards compatibility, etc.

DC had Ikaruga, Under Defeat, Border Down, the Milestone stuff, Zero Gunner 2, Gigawaaangs, Gunbird 2, Mars Matrix, etc.

Saturn...lots. Battle Garegga/Bakraid, Batsugun, Souky, DDP, Radiant Silvergun, Parodius games, Cotton, Twinkle Star Sprites or something fruity like that, Shienryu, just lots.

X360 has Raiden Fighters Aces, Senko no Ronde, Ika, Triggerheart Exelica, the upcoming Cave releases, a Treasure shmup that's on hold (won't surprise me if it's cancelled), um...Otomedius...meh. Can't think of any more.

Wii has a ton of crappily emulated old games up on VC, I guess.

PS3's got jack, pretty much. Soldner-X and 1942 Joint Strike.

My personal fave is my PS2. Love Shikigami, love Cave, love Gradius V, and love the billions of non-shmup games for it. I've got my GC for Ika and Chaos Field and whatever else (MGS!). If you like older-style and/or Raizing, the Saturn or PCE is the way to go. I don't like that kinda stuff too much. Dreamcast is cool and has some cool games, but...meh. Unless you have a stick, the controller sucks, and I just like the other stuff better. PS2's enough for me for a few years, but if Ketsui gets a 360 port...

This post'll probably be eclipsed or the thread closed before I even post it, but it was a good diversion =P

Let's not forget about PS1, it has a pretty good library of shmups, too:
Einhänder, R-Type I+II+Delta, Gradius I+II+Gaiden, Salamander I+II, Harmful Park, Parodius, Sexy Parodius, Oshaberi Parodius, Twin Bee Deluxe Pack, Cotton 100%, Cotton Original, Dodonpachi, Toaplan Shooting Battle (Kyukyoku Tiger etc.) Raiden, Raiden DX, Thunderforce V, Strikers 1945 I+II, Darius Gaiden, Sonic Wings Special, Zanac X Zanac (Zanac + Zanac Neo) etc. etc.

So if you combine PS2 and PS1, that's pretty impressive.

PS2 (jap) without a doubt, a large amount of quality shmups and like ceph said when you take into account the ps1 backward compatibility, it goes without saying...

I'm a great fan of the MD and its shmups. Many of them are very affordable and great: Hellfire, Gynoug, Tatsujin, Battle Mania, Zero Wing, Musha, etc. When you've got enough, you can shell out bigger bucks ang grab the three-digit ones. Some are more worth it than others imo, but Eliminate Down, Battle Mania 2 and Twinkle Tale (my favourite!), are worth getting.

PS1 (or 2 or 3, if you count backwards compatibility).

Of the current generation anyway, the Wii has far and away the most. It's easily padded because of the old titles from TurboGrafx-16/CD, Genesis, NES, SNES, NEO-GEO, and Master System. Europe also gets the C-64 and Japan also has the MSX. The VC even has formerly foreign titles like Gradius II... in the States.

The WiiWare system also has Gyrostarr, StarSoldierR, Protothea (I think is what it's called), and the regular Wii has Blast Works, Castle of Shikigami III (forgive me if I spell that wrong), a 3-game collection coming out, and the full-versioned Geometry Wars.

I don't remember all the ones on the Xbox360 as I only recently got the thing. Geometry Wars 2 recently came out and I think the one I play frequently is called Heavy Weapon.

I think Iit comes down to taste. I prefer either the Saturn or Dreamcast, they both have tons of shooters I like.

The MD is also my fave console for shmups, mainly because it's also my fave system of all time.

I'm deeply in love with the Dreamcast line-up of shooters, as well as the Saturn's. If the PS2 wasn't such a crappy hardware, I'd also have it in high regard for shooters.

For the newer generations, the PS3 sucks. I'm getting an Xbox 360 soon because of this.

I recently started play shmups on the PS2 to fill the void its a blast and all but it is truly annoying that it doesn't have more 480p games. The DC had tons of vga games that looked really good on a HD tv that with RGB connector.

360 is so-so to me since I'm stateside and only really have Ikaruga, which i could play on the DC or GC.

but the saturn was gold in its time...
