Anybody here listen to doom, death, black metal?

Post by xorthen »

Just wondering. I'm currently listening to Candlemass. They kick ass. Classic stuff. You should listen if you're into baroque, gothic, and other ancient styles of music. Anybody like Dolorian or October Tide?

I hate genres, and this kind of music has so many sub genres it's stupid ("no, that's epic crust" :x :x :x :x ). But yeah, I like that kind of music. Doom wise, I'm very much into Khanate, Trees and Boris (though Boris change styles a lot from album to album). With Black Metal, I really like a band called Wolves in the Throne room, who give the genre a more melodic slant. Most BM I find to be too derivative and trying to sound like ancient bands, rather than trying to take the sound and do something fresh to it. I'm not so much into Death metal, aside from Hate Eternal who I love, but I am quite into crust punk.

Dunno if that's what you're talking about

I'm a huge fan of Virgin Black, but I'm afraid I haven't ventured any further into the genre.

I'm sure if there were a sale on black hoodies, safety pins, and Elmer's glue (for my hair) at my local Wal*Mart it might be easier to understand.

Oh no he DI'NT!

Sorta. I like Opeth, early Borknagar, Bloodbath, Finntroll, and a lot of Dan Swano's stuff.

I also have an Emperor and Amon Amarth CD that I like, I just don't know enough to say I like the bands.

I like the straightforward kind of black metal like Frost, Necrophobic and Gallhammer. I can't stand synths in black metal. Xasthur is a band I like a lot too. The production is so bad it's awesome. A lot of bands do the shitty production thing and expect the "trueness" of the sound to make up for shitty songwriting. Xasthur does them both and the shitty production gives it a really good, cold atmospheric feel.

As for doom, everyone that likes good slow doom should check out the new Ocean CD, Pantheon of the Lesser. Rob recommended their first disc to me awhile back and I've been a big fan ever since. The new one is fucking class all the way.

I picked this up on Saturday... I've been digging it, but I have to admit that I have a hard time wrapping my head around 30 minute long epic tracks.

What about Acid King?

EDIT

Don't really care for Ocean. Got the LE of their first album with the Cure cover song. Best song on the album, not on the CD version. Other than that, didn't care.

This is the part that made me laugh. No offense to xorthen. But, yes.

I like folk in the black metal, early-ish death metal and a decent amount of doom (from Candlemass to Esoteric's latest 100 minute beast). Dolorian haven't clicked for me, don't know the other.

I listen to Thrash, Death, and Black Metal. The last album I bought was The Crown's final disk, Possessed 13. Not as good as Crowned Unholy, but still pretty nice.

I almost snagged the new Amon Amarth the other day when Christmas shopping, but felt that would be selfish. Now I wish I'd bought it. I bought myself an Amon Amarth album a couple years ago for Christmas.

Acid King is one of my favorites, obviously. I've seen Black Cobra twice (once with Acid King, incidentally) and didn't really like them much either time.

I really dislike most Black Metal. A large majority of what I've heard is amateurish and uninspired.

This includes some of the "big names in Black Metal" now days. Including those douchy hippies Wolves in the Throne Room and that Emo Cunt Xasthur.

Love Acid King.

Such a fanboy crush on Lori.

I believe Black Cobra's drummer used to be in Acid King.

Also good = Acid Bath. My friend Dax's band before he got famous with the hipsters.

Known him going on... six or so years now.

A real close friend of mine was cousins with the deceased Scott Williams, bass player on the first four Soilent Green releases. I got to meet and be friends with a good number of really cool people through them.

Acid Bath was great. Curious where the Xasthur comment comes from. I know Wolves in the Throne Room are filthy hippies, but Xasthur doesn't seem much more melodramatic than the usual depressed black metal types. I've never read any interviews with the guy so the only exposure I've had to him is the music, though.

I've seen several interviews where he talks about how he can't work with other musicians because he's such an asshole, how he hates people and humanity, how dark he is, etc.

Then the interviewer asks him about his wife and his kid and he proceeds to throw a hissy fit of epic proportions.

LEAVE MY WIFE AND KID OUT OF IT!!!

Then he complained and whined about how he didn't get proper dues when Sunn's Black One exploded them into the indie world (he provided vocals on it).

Guy wants to be a portrayal of dismal solitude and hate for humanity and works a day job with a wife and a kid and whines about not receiving "his cut" when a band he guests with makes it big.

Guy's a proper Nigel. Total falser.

Yeah, that's pretty fucking weak. I still enjoy the tunes though, even if the guy is a douchebag.

Another rec for fans of doom; Zoroaster. Check 'em out live if you get the chance, they tour pretty much non stop. Saw them with Sourvein last year and they fucking killed. They're real chill guys too. They spent the night at my friend's house after the show and drank with us. Good times.

Doom metal makes me sleep (hey it was designed for that anyway).
But death metal - and black most of all - here I am :D
Folkblack is the way too. Asmegin, Thyrfing, that shit.

I play guitar for Anaal Nathrakh, does that count??

I do still like a bit of death/black metal - emperor are cool and I love Necrophagist and Cryptopsy. Mostly into to more progressive stuff these days, Meshuggah, Cynic, Dillinger etc.

Plus you can't beat a bit of bill Bruford and Barry White.

I dont see how these genres have anything to do with each other really but ohwell.

I dont really listen to this kind of music. I like Darkthrone and i like old shit that is not really black metal but i guess influenced it. Venom and Bathory. Too much nazi shit in that scene.

I like some old Death Metal...Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Suffocation. I liked the Birds of Prey album that came out a couple years ago.

I like some stuff that is more Grind...Cattle Decapitation, later Carcass, Pig Destroyer. I despise gore grind for the most part though.

Does Bolt Thrower fit in here anywhere? I dont really know but i like them alot. Also Hell Hammer/ Celtic Frost.

I dont like Doom. Except for Black Sabbath but they arent Doom they just happen to be the band that influenced the genre.

When it comes to metal i prefer NWoBHM and old Thrash.

Nuclear Assault, early Slayer, Early Metallica, Kreator, Destruction, Hirax etc... Way better music IMO

No way.

Regardless, Anaal Nathrakh is the only decent fucking "black metal" band out there.

Fuckin slay.

Way, so I say I know a guy and get a cold shoulder but this guy gets a pass?

:P

Hard to sleep when you're headbanging hard enough to snap your neck.

Everyone should own a CORRUPTED album.

There is no doom. Only Corrupted.

Nah man. Everybody knows somebody. Today I got a call from a guy that used to play bass in an old band of mine, turns out his new band was just featured in Decibel, has an album out on Robotic Empire and is about to go on tour in Europe. Now don't I feel like a loser?

I second Corrupted.

You'll have to forgive my general unfamiliarity with all things Metal...

Can anyone recommend a good Anaal Nathrakh primer?

I seem to be reading a lot of good things about Codex Necro... There also seems to be a good deal of hype surrounding Hell Is Empty, And All The Devils Are Here on the net... but that may simply be because it is the most recent release?

I'd start with Codex Necro, since it's their first full length. They changed style a bit with later releases so I'd suggest starting with the first to get a better picture of the changes in later records. Plus, when I first heard "Pandemonic Hyperblast", I nearly shit my pants. Some vicious shit right there.
