Full fat milk

Post by Motorherp »

And now for something completely different....

Why is it that full fat milk you get in plastic bottles from the news agent and such not have that delicious creamy layer on top that full fat milk in glass bottles such as those delivered by the milk man has? Anyone else noticed that?

Perhaps it's homogenized?

I'm pretty sure that's it. I wouldn't know, I don't drink full fat.

stuff in bottles- straight from the cow-tit ?

UK sounds fun- I wish I had a milk man. When I've run out of milk before- I've used various substitutes (to various degrees of nastiness). Chocolate milk, fruit juice, water, etc.

further
off topic-
Even once back in my apartment days we ran out of cereal. I used dogfood and milk as a substitute. The meaty flavor unlocked when the milk started getting absorbed. Terrible flavor.

How was it before then, though? :p

Might also be something to do with the lack of refrigeration, I suppose. The stuff you're getting delivered is sitting on an open van for its journey, the sun beating down on it, and then it sits on your doorstep until you wake up and bring it in.

I think it's because it homogenized also. If you were to heat it at a really low temperature for awhile you'd start getting a delicious layer of cream on top.

Maybe if you like the taste of glue  . I've been drinking skim milk for almost 10 years now and we ran out. Luckily we had full fat milk on hand for my 19 month old so I just poured that over my cereal. It was D I S G U S T I N G.
It’s almost over. It’s just begun.

The creamy layer on top is because the milk came straight from the cow's udder. We live out in the country and there is a farm out here, we used to just buy the stuff straight from the udder. We use the cream to make butter.

lol as a former food scientist I'd recommend avoiding milk that hasn't been pasteurised especially in UK. Kidney Dialysis for the rest of your life is not a happy prospect, good ole e-coli.

See, that is what happens when you get used to drinking skim milk and try some whole milk with 4% fat incorporated into it. Still better than no milk at all, right? ^_~

I'm not too picky about milk. My mom usually only buys skim nowadays, but I can appreciate the thinness of skim and the substance of 2%+. Milk's milk =P

I have no idea about that layer of creme you're talking about.

For me, milk has to be ice cold and 2%.

I always buy 1% since I'd rather not max out my saturated fat quota on the first meal of the day. But skim milk is pretty much indistinguishable from water.

does the switch from full fat to semi or even full skimmed really make that much of a difference in an average persons daily saturated fat intake?

bearing in mind the other crap most people shovel into their gobs the rest of the day

Milk just grosses me out anymore. I have no qualms about eating most any part of an animal, but something about milk just doesn't sit right with me. That being said, one of the most delicious parts of my life was during and after radiation therapy. Because I had such a problem holding food down, I needed to get as many calories as possible into every meal, so what I started to do was put cream on my cereal and in the supplement shakes I was taking. It would probably send me into cardiac arrest if I did that now.
Feedback will set you free.
