From Detroit to Battle Garegga

Post by CIT »

The other day I was listening to some classic Detroit techno, and suddenly I noticed something:

Listen to the first 25 seconds of Battle Garegga's stage 2 music (Underwater Rampart):

Now listen to this:

8)

The end-roll music is actually also inspired by a UR song, just don't have it handy right now.

I think it's quite fitting that the soundtrack to gritty, post-industrial style Garegga (already a game full of genre-specific citations) pays hommage to the music that (according to pioneers such as Derrick May at least) was meant to thematize the industrial decline of the motor city.

Anybody know of any other musical parallels, in Battle Garegga, or other games?

The music from Do Re Me Fantasy has an homage to the soundtrack from PeeWee's Big Adventure. The beginning of one of the ambient songs (Ice level?) has some notes taken straight from a PW song.

Nice music and really well observed :D
Can't comment on all that techno but the midboss music in stages 5 and 6 of TFVI is really reminiscent of "It's A Sin" by The Pet Shop Boys...not really sure what conclusions to draw from that.Perhaps the twin midboss bullet patterns are inspired by their long-running creative and sexual relationship set against a backdrop of the underground Orn club scene...or something :D

Here's another good one I noticed some time ago.

Super Aleste (short game/special stage theme), 1992, listen from 1:15

New Order, The Perfect Kiss, 1987, listen from 0:55

Dancing Mad #01 (Nobuo Uematsu, Final Fantasy VI) has Ikaruga-like style in general.

There's a song from Scooter ("german techno shouter") which uses the melody from Apidya. Don't know which it was...

The early Manabu Namiki tunes for Zed Blade
seems to be heavily influenced by rave-heavy drum´n´bass stuff of that time.

Wow, the music of this game is made of awesome. I easily see myself playing it for hours just for the catchy tunes. Seems frustrating though, with all the cheap deaths at the end...

And thanks for the link to Tom & Jerry. New records to dig up! :)
