Picking up a 360 tomorrow...

Post by dial911 »

It's time to bite the bullet and go next gen. I'm planning to get:

Ninja Gaiden 2
Orange Box

What other games do I need to catch up on? Any recommendations?
What more can I say I wouldn't be here today if the old school didn't pave the way.

Off the top of my head, not including imports (assuming this is a domestic system you're getting) -

- Mirror's Edge (not for everyone, but I liked it - DL the demo and see what you think)

- Earth Defense Force 2017 (really stupid, but cheap and pretty fun)

- Virtua Fighter 5 and DoA4 are cheap by now if you like 3D fighters...Soul Calibur 4 is also an option...Battle Fantasia isn't too bad if you prefer 2D, though you might want to wait for a price drop...or SF4

- Culdcept Saga (don't know if you ever played the PS2 version, but it's sort of a cross between M:TG and Monopoly - pretty cool, and inexpensive by now)

- Eternal Sonata (not everyone digs it, but out of the RPGs on the 360 this is probably my favorite so far...again, IIRC there's a demo out there, so try that)

- Braid (nifty 15-buck puzzle platformer on XBLA)

My tastes are different from most when it comes to games, but hopefully there's something in there you'd like.

It depends on your tastes, but you've picked two great starters.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend Mirrors Edge, it's a game which will do better in the sequel (it needs refinement).

Don't forget Gears of War - it's great!
Always outnumbered, never outgunned - No zuo no die

EDF is ridiculously fun. I put 50+ hours in it  and don't regret it at all. If you have a mate to play with it's a lot better though.

I just watched a couple youtube vids of Earth Defense Force 2017. Definitely looks like a sleeper hit - Good cheesy fun :)

So far my list currently looks like this:

Street Fighter HD Remix
Earth Defense Force 2017
GOW then maybe GOW 2
Mirror's Edge Demo
Braid Demo

Thanks for the recommendations mates! They should keep me occupied for a while :)

Depends on your budget/tastes.

If I were to get a 360:

Ninja Gaiden 2
Halo 3 & CoD4/World at War (if and only if I could play online)
Ika, THE, Senko no Ronde (obligatories =P)
Devil May Cry 4, if I was in the mood
EDF2017 for sure
BlazBlue when it comes out
obviously, whatever Cave shit I can possibly get
Armored Core 4/For Answer
Fuck that, I just realized midway through this I'd spend my money on a PS3, MGS4, AC4/FA, and Ratchet and Clank =P

Other well-received stuff:
Fable 2, Dead Space, Bioshock, Blue Dragon, Fallout 3, Oblivion, etc., etc. Pretty much none of that shit interests me any more...I used to just buy up everything that was good across wide genres, but...life's too short =P I can't play games where you don't get a lot of content really fast anymore, THANK YOU SHMUPS. I mean, MGS, R&C, ZOE, AC, Counter-Strike (Source), even Halo and CoD for the online multiplayer, I can live with some of them being slow at times, but they're just so fucking INTERESTING and COOL (more in reference to the Kojima stuff and R&C) that you really WANT to sit there and stare at a 90-minute cutscene or marvel at the cool futuristic environments (pretty colooors =D)...Atmosphere's a great thing, too. I hate to see myself get pickier and pickier and less and less patient with some things...Oh, well, shmups are great!

Anyway, my point there was to illustrate our need for information on your preferences to effectively recommend you games. Otherwise...well, I guess I should realize we're all old enough here to decide what we do and don't like, but it does save us some time and effort =P Actually...we should get a big ol' list of recommended games together for some consoles. That'd be a good project if my phone had more memory than a toaster >.>

God, I just snapped out of a near-trance, what the hell did I just spend all that time spewing?? I suppose this is the off-topic place... =P

Braid should be freer than Aegis Wing. Geometry Wars 2 is easily the best thing I've seen in XBLA.

i can't put fallout 3 down. i've beaten it and i'm still playing it non-stop. game of the year for me. edf2017 is a heck of a fun game, especially if your masochistic. another good sleeper title would be crackdown. and if you like first person shooters then call of duty:world at war seems to be the online game of choice right now (though i liked COD4 a lot better).
