Today's N64 Haul

Post by roushimsx »

Well the Layer Section II thread made me go out and hunt for a copy of Duke Nukem 3D for my Saturn, but unfortunatly none were to be found. I did dig up a Pitfall 3D for Playstation which I almost bought but I wasn't sure if Dave still wanted videos for it or not (well, do you? :) ). However, I did stumble on a killer pile of N64 games, the total cost of which was under $40.

Oh yes, life is good.

Hopefully my motherboard will get here tomorrow so that i can cap some quick videos and screenshots of The New Tetris to serve as a visual reference for people trying to play it in an emulator (so that they know how it SHOULD look).

So yea, post your recent bargin hauls here :D

How is Robotron 64? It's been at my EB for a while now, I bet it's still there. It's intrigued me, but I had no idea how it was and didn't feel like taking the risk.

And what's The New Tetris like? What's the newness?

Tetris is 4 player and by making squares of 16 blocks does some sort of combo feature I believe. Its very expensive for a N64 game, to find it complete you would have to pay $60+ for it.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Yeah, IIRC if you create a 16-block square out of different types of pieces you create a silver square (which is worth more points when you clear lines with it); if you can make the square out of 4 of the same type of piece, it turns gold instead, which is worth even more points. Very nasty when used in multiplayer.

I'm pleasently surprised by it. It is to Robotron as Tempest 2000 is to Tempest. It's got the thumping techno soundtrack, the psychadelic and abstract visuals, the frantic-as-all-get-out action that you knew and loved when you were young, etc. Played up to level 40 today... not sure how much I'll get done tomorrow (I'm assuming that my motherboard will get here and that I'll be spending the night fixing my pc, getting my consoles hooked back up to it from the TV, and playing with the cat we're cat-sitting)...hmm

The New Tetris is pretty god damn hot. My wife is even addicted to it (so now she has something else to kick my ass in other than Bombastic, heh). My only real gripes about it are that it doesn't have levels and that the AI is pretty damn sad, even on the master level. Multiplayer, on the other hand, is pure flawless sex.

I've added both to my list of shit I need to screen and video cap this weekend (4 day weekend for me :D ) before I get readdicted to Panzer Dragoon Saga (which I can't play while the PC is down.. I have to record everything and I don't have a VCR...poo)

I played Robotron for the first time a few years ago. I was about 15 or 16.

Anyway, I'll see if my EB still has a copy, my N64 hasn't seen a new game since I got Pokemon Puzzle League last year.

I should try to look for N64 games too. I haven't gotten any games for it in a while. I only have one import for it and it needs some more import lovin' too.

Definitely S&P and Bangaioh are ones you can't miss. As has been said the former is one of the, if not THE, premiere on-rails shooter ever created. imo Bangaioh N64 is superior to the DC version where it counts, in gameplay. Outside of the superior music and graphics, the gameplay changes made to the DC version are not appreciated (of course, I have both because well, I just do).

Other excellent import titles are Shindou Wave Race (Rumble) and Shindou Mario 64 (Rumble) I'll heavily pimp the former as the rumble feature makes a HUGE difference in the feel of the game and adds immensely to the enjoyment factor especially on levels with wicked waves. Rumble Mario 64 is more a novelty. I hated it just becuase the pad was rumbling every time Mario butt stomped but you may enjoy it.

I also have to mention 1080 snowboarding as a favorite, and it of course got a release in the West so there's no excuse not to have this in the collection.

Hurrah for S&P. Up there with Panzer Dragoon in "rail shooters so good you don't mind they're on rails" category. Is Bangaioh for the N64 really good enough (or different enough from the DC version) to warrant the price? IIRC there aren't many copies around, so it's pretty pricey...?

That's just typical ebay price gouging flooding over into real life (similar to what happened with Radiant Silvergun. According to SF Kosmo, the N64 version got a print run of 10,000 copies....which (according to them) would be the same amount of copies that were printed for the Dreamcast in the US.

imo we should all pick a game and go our sperate ways hyping it to be really rare in subtle ways (bury it in lists of rare games, make statements regarding its rarity when talking about games you're really looking for, set up grass roots-style fanpages, etc) and see if we can create some sort of aftershock on ebay over the course of a year or so. I think Space Station Silicon Valley would be a good choice, both because of the quality of the game and because of the developer (DMA Design, developers of Lemmings, Grand Theft Auto, and Uni-motherfucking-racers). Let's start off by saying that the US version only had a print run of 4500-5000 copies.

*shrug* I'm bored. :(

What kind of gameplay changes were made in the switch to DC?

I just got the DC one and I absolutely love it. Aside from my DC, the only other system I have is an N64. I've been thinking about getting some N64 games since I don't really have any

A little OT, but if you ever do find a copy of Duke Nukem 3D for Saturn, it's well worth the money. I have a complete copy, and can safely say if you're a fan of the original game, it's the closest conversion of the PC version on any console.

I'm very interested in Robotron 64 as well, but I've read a LOT of complaints- about the game being WAY too easy-on the internet.

Working on it right now :)

Most of the complaints I've heard only talk about the first half of the game or so (which thus far isn't very difficult). I'll let you know how the later portions of the game are when I get to them :)

the TRUE reason to get Duke Nukem 3d for Saturn is of course Death Tank 2. Make sure you obtain a savefile of either Exhumed/Powerslave or Quake to unlock Death Tank 2, otherwise you have the option to play through the game and destroy all toilets in all levels.

Once you unlocked Death Tank 2, you will hardly go back to playing Duke Nukem itself.

What do you guys use to play N64 imports? Is there a Game Genie cartridge for the N64 that you can use?

There's a converter, but most would probably just break the tabs inside their N64 off.

Cool, thanks! :D Would I be correct in assuming that breaking the tabs off is done in the same manner as on an SNES?

Well, as far as bargain hauls go, I just got Metal Slug 4+5, Pitfall 3D: Beyond the Jungle, and Sanvein.

Sanvein is my favorite budget shmup EVER, and is definately in my top ten, and I've already commented on MS 4 and 5.

Pitfall 3D Beyond the Jungle is the BEST platformer I've yet to play on my PSTwo-and I've played Pac Man World 2, Ratchet and Clank Going Commando, and Vexx-but this one beats 'em all. Heck, it beats both Gauntlet games avaible for the system as well, IMO. The control is FANTASTIC, once you get used to the jumps. Collecting Gold Bars-in addition to completing your mission objective-is as fun as ever, as is the vine-swinging you get to do, and the animation is fantastic! The scorpions in this game can literally pick Pitfall Harry up with their tails, and swing and slam him on the ground left and right!

As good as this game is, I'd really like to try out Pitfall: The Lost Expedition sometime! :D

I had quite a bit of fun with Bomberman Hero, how're you liking it so far?

As for my own recent N64 hauls, Mischief Makers for $4 = :!: , the game is really quite good if a bit smallish at times. Cool boss battles.
