Metal Slug 7
This has been out in the US for about a week now and I didn't see any topics on it so I'll start one. For those considering picking it up I'll list out some pros and cons.
Cons:
- No branching paths.
- No transformations.
- Inconsistent framerate( but it is metal slug )
- Not much new stuff( but it is metal slug )
- Ugly backgrounds
- Not the best in the series.
Pros:
- Feels like a metal slug.
- Characters and enemies are very well animated.
- Combat school( like X )
- POW list( like X )
- Holds its own against past iterations.
- Cool bosses.
For those who hate portable gaming the game is coming to XBLA at some point so you can get it then instead.
For those who like portable gaming I think its a solid entry into the series and the combat school is perfect for portable gaming. Also it has really cool packaging, a poster, and a bonus disk.

To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders.
I was planning to pick this up when I get a DS soon. Can't say I expected it to be anything revolutionary, as long as it's a solid Metal Slug game I'll be content. Slightly off-topic but was Contra 4 good as well?

I don't post there and didn't see it. But that is a different site and well there's likely some community overlap the communities are not one and the same. Additionally the topic you linked to had not been posted in since July. Are topics about non shmup games not supposed to be in off topic?Ceph wrote:There is a topic about it where it belongs: http://2dgaming.site90.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=241

I got it a few days ago and am absolutely loving it. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite games of 2008. I haven't beaten it yet (just got to the awesome stage 5 boss), but it's shaping up to be the best Metal Slug since 3 for me. I was really skeptical about the quality of the game originally when I heard it wasn't going to get an arcade release, but I'm delighted to find my worries weren't realized. It kicks Contra 4's butt.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Contra 4 is fantastic. Get a friend to buy it as well and you can have some awesome co-op.kengou wrote:I was planning to pick this up when I get a DS soon. Thank you for starting this thread. I had been interested in MS7, but forgot about it in recent days.
Typically for a Metal Slug fix I am just fine playing Metal Slug on Saturn or part 3 on Xbox or J-PS2, but it sounds like MS7 will be a good portable fix to go along with Metal Slug Advance.

On beginner you get enough continues that it's not too bad. But unless he likes this genre and has experience in in this stuff then the combat school might be frustrating.Damocles wrote:How is the difficulty? I thought it was a so-so because I couldn't tolerate:
- The majority of the sprites being reused from previous games and taken a shit on by cropping them to fit the DS screen.
- Horrible foregrounds/backgrounds.
- About nothing new gameplay wise.
It had some things going for it like the new slugs and some bosses, but the whole package was put together sloppily.

What the fuck. I preordered it from my local game store and even called them today and the owner was just like "Uhhh....we haven't gotten the shipping invoice yet." And to top it off, my second copy of Chaos Legion from them doesn't work, never mind the several other games that didn't. I'm getting MS7, using up my store credit, and I'm done with that shithole. The Gamestop nearest me is actually staffed by cool people, and the manager plays shmups. I was talking to him about shit like that for around 20 minutes when I bought my GC Ikaruga from there. It was around when Soldner-X came out for PC and he was all like "Yeah this one game that my friend got not too long ago, something with an X..." So he calls up his friend and as he's hanging up I was like "Soldner-X?" and he was like "Yeah, actually!" and shit like that. I'd rather spend a little extra gas to talk to cool people like that than waste money at such a scrupulous little place. The owner's a fatass dick. He's not that bad a guy, actually kinda cool, but he's gotta keep a small store running, so...Well, there're a couple cool employees, I guess, and they do sell EVERYTHING there, not just current consoles, so every so often something cool comes in, but hell if I'm going to rely on them for new releases anymore. They just don't have anything besides the biggest PS3/X360/PS2 releases. Gamestop was only a day or two late on Bangai-O Spirits (it does take time for shit to ship), but the local place didn't even get it. I gotta quit ranting, jeez. I am bored.
Anyway, I haven't played many Slugs, so I'm not worried about reused shit, and I CAN'T WAIT to rape vehicles with Ralf. That's so cool that they put Ralf and Clark in there. Too bad they didn't get to Leona and Whip. MS Advance was so disappointing, I can't wait for a REAL portable Slug =)

That is actually the only game in the series I really had fun with, because they took out the "throw tons of shit at you" aspect of the game and instead tried to make some actually balanced level design.m3tall1ca wrote:MS Advance was so disappointing, I can't wait for a REAL portable Slug =)
Sometimes I think I´ll give the series another chance and just start to get angry five minutes in because aside from maybe the first game they all are just overwhelming and ridiculously cheap. So I usually just start creditfeeding while I keep grinding through yet another zombie/alien section with my laughable textbook definition of a peashooter. MSG Advance was managable, and for once you simply COULDN´T creditfeed through the game, forcing you to actually learn the stages. I usually play arcade games once credit at a time, but in MSG I tend to give up very early because I just don´t see the point.
I know a lot of stupid people call most arcade games "coin-eaters", but in the case of MSG I do believe that these games where made for creditfeeding. I´m not saying that it isn´t possible to play these games for a 1cc at all, but I can´t imagine the amount of stamina it would take to clear one of the later games in the series. It´s a shame because the games have some of the nicest pixelart ever... I guess these games are the best when you play it with a buddy, a couple of beers not really giving a shit

I see no problem with reusing sprites and Metal slug does not need anything new gameplaywise. I dont think a new game in a series needs to add anything. It just needs to be fun. Personal opinion. I have not played MS7 yet, guess i will picl it up this weekend.UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:I thought it was a so-so because I couldn't tolerate:

PCE-FX's NDS Metal Slug 7 review...
Went down to my local Gamestop on "Black Friday" yesterday...the store was busier than usual, of course. Managed to pick up a brand new copy of Metal Slug 7 for the asking price of $29.99 + tax. Well worth the $$$ that it commands.
MS7 is a throw-back to the classic Neo-Geo MVS days of lore in that it retains that famous yen/quarter-munching aspect. Glad to see that particular feature back after the absence of it in the GBA Metal Slug Advance release.
You're given only three lives and there isn't an option to change the default number of lives anyways. Would've been nice if it was implemented during development. ^_~
Like the end-stage boss fight showdown featured at the end of Mission 6. It would've been awesome to see the cool mecha suits slug it out on the MVS hardware running on a low-res 15.7kHz RGB monitor -- that is the pure way to play it on dedicated arcade hardware setup.
Sadly, none of the squid-like alien creatures are present or make a cameo appearance (ala Metal Slug X) except a scant few pics during the staff credits. Yep, General Morden is up to his usual "bag of dirty tricks" again.
If SNK/Playmore had gone with the traditional hand-drawn background scenery instead of using rendered backgrounds, MS7 would definitely be like the old legendary Metal Slug games (Metal Slugs 1-5 on the MVS platform) of the past.
The framerate in MS7 will slow down just a tad bit if there are too many sprites and action going on on-screen (even the GBA Metal Slug Advance suffered from this same malady from the get-go). It really doesn't affect or compromise gameplay though.
Some of the MS7 end-stage bosses have lots of kick-ass moving parts/detail and little animated touches that remind veteran & hard-core Metal Slug fans alike, that it really is another true Metal Slug sequel at the central core. Of course, Metal Slug was famous for the use of such detailed and lavish hand-drawn sprites for everything that it looked like a living and breathing animated piece of animated art at it's best...Nazca started it and SNk/Playmore has carried on the same tradition for it's MS series. ^_~
The U.S. release of MS7 does come with a cool MS7 poster (suitable for framing & posterity) and mini CD disc as well. Very nice NDS bonus perks which is a rarity for U.S. released NDS games anyways.

Same here, as I think the sprites are lovely. However, there really was something awful going on with the scaling in this game (I don't think cropping is the correct term).Octopod wrote:I see no problem with reusing sprites and Metal slug does not need anything new gameplaywise. Another nice perk is that the U.S. version of Metal Slug 7's instruction manual is printed in full-color. Most instruction manuals for U.S. based NDS games are printed in black & white to save on production costs. At least with Ignition Entertainment handling the U.S. localization of MS7, they went the extra mile & beyond to release it with bonus swag + full-color manual is a plus in my book. Can't getting any better than that here, folks. ^_~
Also, if you choose the difficulty setting, it also determines how many credits you get overall to complete the entire seven missions that await you in MS7. Here is the breakdown of credits one gets if choosing the following listed difficulty setting:
Select "Beginner" difficulty & the CPU gives you 9 credits to play with.
Select "Normal" difficulty & the CPU gives you 4 credits to play with.
Select "Hard" difficulty & the CPU gives you a mere 2 credits to play with.
Once a mission is completed for the very first time, it is then "unlocked" & becomes selectable from a sub-menu. You can choose to start at any unlocked mission...which is nice instead of having to start from the very beginning (like how it is on the MVS versions of MS).
