There was a release of Space Invaders on the PC Engine/Turbo Grafx console which had a very memorable bit of music when you chose to play the enhanced version of the game that was on the HuCard. It was accompanied by a 3D (but basic) animated graphic of a spaceship. The music only lasted for a few seconds but has always stuck with me.

Stage 4 on Ikaruga has a pretty great track.
Battle Garegga has a great soundtrack overall. Very peculiar.
ESP Ra.de.'s soundtrack is pretty good too. The guys' stages stand out, and also the boss' theme.
But Thunderforce IV and III have the best soundtracks overall. The tracks to both of the games' first stages stand out in particular.
Loads of others, but that's what's coming to mind.

if theres one thing thats unanimously good about touhou its the music...
You might not be able to enjoy that style of music, it's really upmood and thin.. But the melodies are well crafted and the homophony (I think I've seen 4 layers) is well worked on, it makes for catchy yet surprisingly "complete" tunes.
and please, if you think you are still right after reading this, explain to us why...

The game is not a 100% shmup. It's a jump 'n shoot if you want to call it that. There are 3 levels of pure spaceship shooter action nevertheless. In the Amiga scene, it belongs to the probably best 20 games ever. Very arcade-y, great level design and Chris Huelsbeck's best work ever. It literally feels like a console game, with later ports brought to the Genesis and SNES. The Turrican trilogy has, perhaps next to Castlevania, the best music of the kind ever - that's not just my opinion. Google the OST.lilmanjs wrote: never played that game. I should check it out.

There's nothing impressive about four voice homophony. That's the standard for all pop type music.nimitz wrote:no and nocaptpain wrote:Jeez guys, tohou games have like MIDI music, it's universally awful...

It's got drab, uninteresting harmonic structure, predictable melodies, and really bad timbre (poor choice of "instrumentation").
Contrast that with something like Garegga. It's not groundbreaking, but it's at least a little adventurous and weird-sounding, as opposed to the same goofy little 'doo doo doo' melodies you hear in Touhou.
I think I sound pretty bitter here but I honestly don't care at all, just trying to answer your question

speaking of 8-bit goodness. The soundtrack for Recca rocks the famicom as hard as anything.
Here's a link to a free download of the soundtrack - good quality mp3 rips in stereo.

nice to see you quote my message. I really like the soundtrack and it makes me feel when I'm playing the game like I'm playing something from the 90s.soniq-man wrote:lilmanjs wrote:lately my dad has been listening to the Last Hope soundtrack like crazy. 3 times this week I've gone back in the computer room to ask him a question and he's had to stop listening to it.![]()
