Sonic Unleashed
Sonic Unleashed
So I picked up Sonic Unleashed on 360 today....
Now I know some are gonna look for things that are wrong and hate ect, but I can honestly say I really like it so far. The "hedgehog engine" looks great, the visuals are really nice. Those sick of the "brown" game trend ect will be pleased for sure. The graphics are really nice and well polished... not sloppy at all including the camera.
The controls are great also. They have the homing jump attack as a different button this go around but it's just a matter of getting use to a different button, it honestly handles better than sonic adventure by alot to me.
The sonic levels are dead on... this is a huge leap for sonic games, well considering the recent past. They work and are quite fun.
Some are hating on the werehog levels but I've actually enjoyed them so far. Sure the sonic levels are more fun but I don't dread or hate the werehog stages so far. They are melee combat and platforming with mild puzzles so far. they work and play well and you have alot of combos ect to work with via leveling up ect. Some also have been saying they are slow. To make it clear, yes they are slow to the sonic stages but he doesn't move slow or sluggish... hold down a trigger and he will gallop on all 4s.
The area maps or over worlds, whatever you call them are not dreadful either. they are short and to the point so far... minimal time is required in them and they are pretty streamlined. Much more streamlined then sonic adventure ect.
If you enjoyed the sonic adventure games I can easily recommend this game. I find the werehof levels FAR more enjoyable than any of the extra character crap from the other adventure games aside maybe the tails stages from the 1st one (been to long to say for sure)?
Honestly from the bit I've played so far (2 sonic and 2 werehog stages) I really enjoy it.
If you liked the sonic adventure games I'd say deffinately give this a spin. If you didn't then give this a rent or shot.
Either way this a HUGE positive step for sonic... it deffinately feels polished and looks nice. I can't speak for anything but the 360 version though.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Agreed on all fronts. A friend of mine just bought the Wii version, and I have to say, it's definitely one of the most fun Sonic games for a while (Not counting handhelds, of course). They even pulled off the werehog off well, now that's something.
This almost, almost, makes up for Sonic's crappiness in Brawl...almost.

Haven't played the Wii version. I know the werehog to sonic level ratio is much different as are the levels themselves.
Wii is 1/3 and 360 it 1/1 from what I here?

After Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 360? After those games, it's a miracle that he has an image at all. If anything, Unleashed saved his image, in my eyes at least.Pixel_Outlaw wrote:I have not read up much on the game but do they sort of ruin classic Sonic's image with this game?
That's about right. The Wii version doesn't have two of the day stags that are included in the other versions. That, and it's hub world is menu based. It's not too much of a bad thing, though. The Night stages get better as you play, anyway.Strider77 wrote:Haven't played the Wii version. I know the werehog to sonic level ratio is much different as are the levels themselves.

I think Sonic Heroes was actually the best 3D Sonic game (at least if you played with the Sonic / Tails / Knuckles Team). It was just pure high speed Jump'n'Run fun, no crappy overworld, no crappy sidequests, no need to play with other crappy characters.SockPuppetHyren wrote: After Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 360? I never played heroes.... right now I have to say unleashed is my favorite so far.

yeah... ring collecting is easy and actually serves more of a purpose this time.

I've played the game more and reallly have nothing bad to say about it. I even enjoy the werehog levels. I can't say that I would get rid of them.
It's to bad alot are probably not gonna even give this a chance. Especiially considering how dead this thread is. Although that may be due to it being on 360 for now.... PS3 was delayed. Next gen only seems to be popular with a handful of folks on here.
I can say easily it's the best 3D sonic game I've ever played and I'd much rather be playing this than any of the older ones right now.

I watched few vids of the PS2 version and the daylight levels do look insanely fun. The werehog levels look like simple God Of War-clones, but I guess I could tolerate them...I wonder if after clearing the game you can play the stages freely?
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

yes.... you can choose all stages from the world map menu after you beat them without going into the village areas.
the werehog stages are not bad at all. there are alot of combos but there is alot of platforming and some exploring. to me it does not feel like a bunch of arena fights. the stages are not like that... and the bosses are alot of fun with the werehog also.
I was fearful of having to deal with the werehog, but I actually enjoyed those bits to. I wouldn't rip them out if I could.
The sonic levels are insanely fun and fast... they are just about perfect.

Hmm, I had pretty much written this game off, but maybe I'll have consider... err, reconsidering. If I had more money at the moment that'd be nice too.
If the last next-gen Sonic could get a platinum hits (or whatever) release on the 360, then this one has got to have a chance. I'm not good at waiting though, so I guess we'll see.

I'd really recommend it.
Like I said I enjoy the werehog stages to, especially his bosses.
Just don't button mash through them, you can but you get alot less experience and it can make some enemies way harder. If you do want to just button mash you can just build up your strength and life... if you want to combo you can just build up your skill ect. Or any kind of mixture. There are air combos with launchers, dragon punches and even an air spinning pile driver. I'm not saying it's the most amazing melee action game ever... but they play well and I find them fun (MUCH more fun than ANY of the side characters from the sonic adventure games) .
Plus there is alot of platforming in these stages also.... I never felt like it was just a tedious fight after another. The early stages are a bit more focused on combat, the 1st 2 or so, but it starts have alot more jumps and platforming ect.
If you bother to succeed at the quick time god of war like grab attacks you'll build alot more exp pts. You can use those to boost up sonic's speed and boost meter to help with time trials ect.
The way the stages work is, the stage will have a level to it. You raise your "stage" level by finding medals. You can do that different ways.. some of the secondary werehog stages you might be able to skip actually since you can scower the sonic levels for branching paths ect to find more that way. Or explore the villages more, buy items to trade to the professor ect. There are alot of ways to get the medals. It's not totally linear. So you could focus on what you like more.
The ONLY graphical issue I have seen is some parts of villages the frame rate drops. But this is only in a few of the villages and not terrible. A few of the werehof hog stages might have MILDLY. I'm not bithing about it or saying it's a big deal... it's very minor and I'm just noting it. This is a very pretty game and the sonic levels don't drop in frame rate for a second. Like I said the werehog levels don't for the most part either. There is alot of nice color in the game.

Gave in and bought it. Pretty glad I did, it's quite good! The daytime stages are fast (really fast!) and the werehog stages are better than I expected. Lots more platforming than I had been led to believe, most reviews make it sound like the werehog bits are pretty much all combat. Glad that's not the case. Seems like it'll be a pretty lengthy game too, lots of stages!
The apparent bad stuff: the framerate goes wonky at some strange times, the storyline is still trite, and Chip isn't particularly likable.
Whatever, I'm still glad I bought it. Platforming FTW.

yeah the frame rate would be the only gripe I have.... it shows up in the last 2 stages. It doesn't break either one but it'd be nice if it didn't happen at all.
the japanese one has been delaued till spring of next year so I'm curious if that will be fixed or if anything new will be added?
Still like I said it's nothing game breaking.... I like one of the stages it does this on, the frame drop doesn't ruin it... it would be nice if didn't though. It's just at a part here and there.

IGN, GameSpot, Kotaku and all this stuff are bullshit, reviews should be left only to gamers, no more biases fuckersDBH87 wrote:Gamespot gave the 360 version 3.5/10
