Where has all the manly violent anime gone?

The Five Star Stories movie covers the parts of the manga it corresponds with really well, its just a shame they never followed it up with anything else.

I'd love to get the US release of the manga but it seems to be out of print and the second hand prices are just astronomical.

Personally, I started reading the manga a long while back and enjoyed it a bit, despite it being very contrived. Then someone who was ahead of me spoiled an important plot twist that I was not impressed by.

What I heard about the parts AFTER that event sounded like the writer was completely out of ideas, and just flailing around hoping the story would resolve itself. So I didn't bother finishing it.

If you're still curious, give it a shot. At the very least, both anime and manga have excellent artwork.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I already have the Cromartie HS mangas and the movies are pretty fucking funny for anime. Gungrave is my shit though. I wish they would make another game.

Indeed they are. When I was hunting them down I got few from eBay, few from Amazon, few from other online stores and even few from a local store which for some unfathomable reason had them. Took me two-three months to find them all and in the end I had spent quite a lot of money for the complete set. The first issue was the most expensive one at $60 or so. Feels like it was all worth it, though.

The movie's decent enough, yeah. I tried watching Nagano's other mecha series Heavy Metal L-Gaim, but I just couldn't get into it...it felt terribly aged, both in art and how the story is told.

What's people's take on Guyver? A friend of mine swears by it, but I've never seen the attraction, to be honest. Thought it looked a little cheesy.

I said read, don't watch, read. I heard the anime was crappy and diverged from the manga storyline to save the characters.

I only watched the 12 episode OVA of Guyver and my take is just watch episodes 1-6 (or the first Volume of the DVD release) since after the sixth episode the show went down hill. They shouldn't made episodes 7-12 (terrible animation for an OVA, and the story was pretty lame).

I can't believe they showed Urotsukidoji in movie theaters in the US.

Yeah, like I said, never saw the attraction in Guyver. "Man gets biomech suit and does stuff with monsters" sounds like a more gory version of Ultraman, LOL. I know people who love it, but each to their own, I guess.

Unfortunately, there really isn't any badassery in anime anymore. Hellsing Ultimate is about the best it gets (which is good, mind you, but it's annoying not having options).

Though, I'm a mild fan of the absurd ridiculous comedy style. Things like "Hayate the Combat Butler" and "Jungle wa itsumo Hare nochi Guu."

Haha, interesting. Well I'm certainly not a Naruto nerd enough to debate all this shit; I don't obsess over details, it's more the literary qualities of the Naruto manga that I value: excellent drawings, good characterisations, for the most part interesting plots. Still, regarding its structure & genre, it's a fighting manga, and especially considering its limitations, I think it's a pretty good comic. As I said before, there's an almost existential sadness in it which is a very rare thing for a manga of this genre.

You aren't likely to find any one who doesn't hate Naruto outside of a shounen anime/manga community. :p

For the record, I watched a few episodes and dropped it as soon as I had picked it up. When I started watching, the only thought I had in my mind is 'okay, when is this going to become cool and badass like everyone told me it was?' It never did, so I dropped it. Believe it!

I tried watching Naruto and gave up after six episodes. However, I'm assured by a mate that when it reaches the twenties it's got some of the most mind-blowing fights and animation going.

I just can't be bothered to get there though.

I used to think it was some kind of trendy thing to read the manga of anything over the anime, but more often than not, you probably should. As long as series originated as a manga (most do), it's likely much better. Pacing in directly-translated-from-the-book-anime's suck hard.

Like anything Oh! Great has done - artistically, the animators don't hold a candle to his work. They would have to labor ten times as much, smash in twenty times more detail, improve the frames-per-second to show the implied motion that his still-pictures evoke, and generally go bankrupt before they could ever make a decent anime out of his manga.

Considering that it was made by the same folks who brought us Star Blazers anime. Walt Disney must be rolling in his grave over that particular piece of anime. ^_~

Streamline Pictures (headed by Carl Macek of Robotech series fame) lumped up the first three episodes of Urotsukidoji anime series for the U.S. theatrical version and for the intial VHS release (but it was still edited for content). I recall that it was available for rental at the infamous Video Park chain (they asked for your Social Security Number back in the day...WTF?!). Of course, this was before, identity theft was on the rise...even Major Video, Blockbuster Video and Hollywood Video never asked their customers for such SSN shit anyways, just a valid driver's license at the time of intial sign-up & you were good to go.
