Best sound f/x and/or music track ?
So which game would you nominate for having the best sound f/x and/or music track? Doesn't matter what the platform is - console, home computer, arcade, etc.

For best sound altogether, it's a close call between the robotic voice from Ikaruga, the jewel/ring collection sound from Progear (one of the most rewarding sounds I've heard...), the S.O.S from Dangun Feveron (hell, just most of the sounds and voices are amazing in DF), the sound effects from R-Type Delta, the imposing german taunting from Einhänder and the explosions/spells from Diadra Empty (with a subwoofer you can notice quite an interesting depth in them)... Sorry, I cannot decide.
As for music... I'm torn between The Stone-Like from Radiant Silvergun, Legendary Wings from TFV, Fate (Stage 7)/Last Boss from R-Type Delta, Weakboson - Gorge City - from Psyvariar 2 and Voyage 1969 from Imperishable Night (well, I love the whole music from that game).
Again, I just can't decide.

so... best soundtrack, or best track?
(i think we've been over the OST question fairly recently).
for best track, i think it'd be between Pink Sweets' score attack stage (Natsuko Naito!) and Psyvariar's Cloudbank.
sfx: Aki's voice samples in Mushihimesama.
how many endbosses tell you "you can do it", and then when you finish him off, "it was good meeting you". in such a kind voice. chills down my spine every time.

Touhou music gets a thumbs up because of the whole One Guy Doing Everything aspect of the game I admire, but I wouldn't label it as being one of the best.
Daifukkatsu and Guilty Gear probably have the best arcade soundtracks I've heard. And on console Silent Hill is great for entirely different reasons. Though the best game music is still Go Straight.

Batrider wins on sound, if only for the announcer which is pretty much the greatest thing ever. I like the voices in Dimahoo ("Get da bomb!" "Warning, be careful, here comes...the strong one!"), Ketsui and Daifukkatsu as well, but nothing beats "WELCOME TO VIOLENT CITY!" "MARVEROUS!" and "NAOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
Music-wise I don't think I can put anything above G-Darius, especially the incredible final stage and boss tracks.

A man of considerable taste! I was going to mention those, too.R-type 2 stage 2
Gradius Gaiden boss rush 2

I listen to shmup music as much as any other music, but the first tracks that spring to mind in threads like this one always tend to be 'Burn the Wind' from Salamander (MSX version), 'B.T. Dutch' from G-Darius and 'Area 26-10' from Metal Black.

Also there's not just MIDI music in the games, there's MP3 music as well.Udderdude wrote:There are a ton of fan remixes, and some of them are pretty good. The original MIDIs are pretty lame though.captpain wrote:Jeez guys, tohou games have like MIDI music, it's universally awful...

Actually... From Phantasmagoria of Flower View onwards the music is wav only. It's pretty much the reason why the games weight roughly 431mb or so.ZeetherKID77 wrote:Also there's not just MIDI music in the games, there's MP3 music as well.Udderdude wrote:There are a ton of fan remixes, and some of them are pretty good. Oh, Visionnerz Arrange is such an awesome song... I sometimes put the Darius Gaiden disc to hear the soundtrack and scare my neighbours for torturing me day and night with mediocre friendly radio-pop.
Gotta love the surreal feeling and 投影 (I have the japanese version but the title/translation is "Projection") absolutely rules with that serious overtones, old fashioned keyboards and drumming... *Neon Light Illusion comes out from the dimensional breach*
It's totally telling you: "Fun is over, time for some serious business."

They are surprisingly catchy, though. I find myself humming some of those songs for days after playing, which didn't really happen to me in a shooter since Einhander, and I feel they fit well in the game. Especially some in Perfect Cherry Blossom.captpain wrote:Jeez guys, tohou games have like MIDI music, it's universally awful...
