After recently seeing pictures of a few of these new style cabs that appear to be no more than a large LCD screen and control panel on a slanted structure (wood? plastic?) I'm thinking of buying one of these just to use with JAMMA games.
Can they be bought by your average punter, either ready assembled or possibly as some kind of self-assembly flat-pack?
As I'm in the UK I'd be looking for a supplier over here.
Modern cabs for shmups?

A Taito Egret II cabinet with the cool and very easily rotatable monitor mechanism would be your best bet if you want to play both tate and yoko based arcade PCBs. If you like the aestethics of Japanese cabs, then it would be a perfect match right up your alley. The Egret II does come with a 29" Nanao RGB monitor that is dual sync for 15.7kHz and 24.5kHz rates (unless if you want to make it a tri-sync one with a Wei-ya monitor chassis upgrade and accept 31kHz to play DC and/or Sega Naomi, high-res arcade mobos like Atomiswave, Taito Type X type of games on it). ^_~
Fellow shmupper, sven666, is selling Egret II cabs in Europe...hit him up for one if you're interested in buying one. Fellow UK shmupper, Skykid bought an Egret II and really enjoys it. ^_~

I was going to jump in and recommend an Egret II or III, but I'm glad to see that was reply #1.
If you want to play older style arcade shooters, a 15KHz CRT is a far better option. For starters it's the native resolution of most games, and secondly older sprite-based games just look far better on CRT.
And Taito's cabinets are just damned sexy.
P.S.: This belongs in the hardware forum.
