If it is allowed, I like to know how to go about doing this!

I am already excited at thoughts of playing Batrider on my TV!

Yes it is allowed, it's even supported by Sony. There are options built in to the xmb for installing other operating systems such as linux. Here is a how to guide:

Once you've got linux running you can then install something like sdlmame or whatever else takes your fancy. You wont be able to harness the whole power of the ps3 though. You have access to the level 2 hypervisor but no direct access to the RSX. That is enough for running emulators though.

Update on Soldner-X;

Soldner-X arrives on PlayStation Network on 12/4 for $9.99

I just got a PS3 so I'll probably check it out.

Awful.

Did they add that score counter in as an afterthought?

Luckily I downloaded Söldner-X on the PC to try before it came out on PS3, so I didn't have to regret wasting money on it. I definitely want to see more shmups released on the PS3. It's such a great piece of hardware.

Has anyone tried out Astro Tripper to know if its good or not? I don't even know if it's in the American PS Store yet.

judging from the screenshots it looks like a pretty direct port of the pc version apart from graphical changes. I liked the pc version quite a lot.

It's quite different actually. Audio/Visual enhancements and rebalanced game play. If you own a PS3 and are into shmups, you surely don't go wrong at such a price.

Any decent shmup for it? I know there's the Gundemonium Collection on the PSN Store, but i already have it on Steam.

Soldner X2 is meant to be good - avoid the first, snatch the sequel. I heard that Raiden III's on there now and the original PSX ports of Dodonpachi/Donpachi (correct me if I'm wrong though).

It's not as easy as it used to be to get an arcade machines emulator going but I did it on my cousin's PS3 and we got all the Cave games up to Progear working. It's FBANext though.

Here's a more recent thread about ps3 shmups: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=38940

I strongly recommend Space Invaders Infinity Gene. By far the best shmup on the Store.

By the way, what's your PSN?

my PSN is viniciusvbf

I tried the demo of Space Invaders Infinity and didn't liked it much, maybe it gets better on the full version.
I'd like to buy Under Defeat HD, but it's just too expensive

Steel dragon (aka Shieryu) is available on PSN in the EU now under the Ps2 section. Very barebones though with no button config or so. Also Raiden 3 is in the Ps2 section in NA.
