i'm thining the best next gen for shmuping on a literal slant will be the ps3 modded as it's been confimed that it's backwards compatible with both ps1 and ps2. the fact that post ps2 there are pretty much gurenteed to be at elast a few ports on budget for the console, i don't think we should discount shmups yet.
TWITCHDOCTOR wrote:I really can't see anymore 2D style shmups coming out after the PS2.
So, its highly possible that the PeeTwo will be the "last blast" .
im sure people were saying that for the ps2 as well.
this topic is kinda stupid, i mean "omg there's no shmups at E3 what teh hell"
there obviously wond be, did they show gradius 3&4 at the E3 right before the ps2 release? dont be an idiot.
and there was a shmup at E3 anyway according to that other topic, twinkle star sprites, so here you go.
Last great console?
Who's to say there won't be shmups coming out on the DC after that PS2 is taking its long dirt sleep.

1) Shooters are still in production for Naomi which means shooters are almost certainly still in production for the DC. So stick that where teh sun dont shine with your longevity crap.petrolhead wrote:Now that is just stupid talk, the DC was a good console but as far as sales, games and longevity, the PS2 is better choice.
I own both, along with a GC.They are all great consoles but you can't argue against the PS2.The biggest selling console of all time.
2) Since when do sales emulate anything to do with gaming quality?
3) Since when has the PS2 beaten the NES and the GB in the sales race?

I think you've got the wrong idea.
I OWN both DC and PS2 , i think that both are great consoles.
BUT
To claim that the DC's one or two releases per year means that the console is still alive and kicking is simply insane, the PS2 is simply the best choice for a large catalogue of games and continued support.
And as for gaming quality, it's all very subjective and down to individuals. But the PS2 is quite a bit more powerfull than a DC, and it shows.
As for worldwide sales, i'm presently looking for accurate figures to either prove/disprove the PS2's place as the best selling console ever.>70million sold.
Found some figures:-
Actual figures are apparently PS2 >70 million, nes >60 million ,gameboy >150 million(includes GB color).
Gameboy is the biggest selling handheld.Great if you like Tetris.
So as far as a home console is concerned,i was nearly correct.
From Nintendo
nes >60 m, N64 32m, s nes 49 m,
From Sony as of May 2004, could'nt find newest figures.
PS1 >100 m,PS2 >70 m

Both points are irrelevent when it comes to discussion over a genre like stg's.petrolhead wrote: To claim that the DC's one or two releases per year means that the console is still alive and kicking is simply insane, the PS2 is simply the best choice for a large catalogue of games and continued support.

The best choice for continued support is looking at what the ative userbase wants, A game is going to get alot more interest on a console that doesn't have other games released on the same week as direct competition.
And real world power in terms of processor usage and applied technology to the lastest engines is almost an irrelvent point when you consider this genre, The last shmup actually developed for the PS2 and not ported was Gradius 5.
There are very few Shumps actually developed from the ground up for the PS2 hardware.
Strangely enough thanks to the Naomi relationship the Dreamcast is far more likely to get newly titles than the PS2.

Best-selling consoles in video games history:
• Gameboy Series, Nintendo, 110million
• Playstation, Sony, 74million
• NES, Nintendo, 62million
• SNES, Nintendo, 49million
• N64, Nintendo, 28million
• Atari VCS, Atari, 26million
• Mega Drive, Sega, 23million
• Master System, Sega, 10million
Hhmm...
It will be quite some time until another console knocks off the GB from it's sales figure.
Interesting is that the PCE/TG-16/DUO isn't even in the list.
I've read from other sources that it sold better than the Genesis in Japan & placed at a close 2nd only after the SNES in the mid 90s.
Can someone confirm this?

The Naomi is all but retired at this point, there's a few things on the horizon, but for better or worse Type-X is the future.
Taito has been pushing shmups to the PS2, they're even considering making extra hardware for the PS2 so that Type-X conversions can be higher quality. Of course why they can't just program it properly instead is beyond me

The PCE/TG16 sold like shite in the US, and it wasn't even released in Europe. So while it may have been huge in Japan, that isn't going to do it a lot of good in the overall worldwide sales figures.

I intend to keep the DC, but the PS2 will probably be replaced with a PS3(backwards compatible psx and ps2).
My GC will also go, in favour of a Revolution, the Revolution will also play Nes,Snes and N64 games, all available to download from Nintendo.
I can't wait to get Super StreetFighter Turbo....aaaaahhhh the memories.
I've got to get my DC online....will do it this week...

I remember about 3 years ago people thought the DC would be "the last good console for shmups," then along came the PS2 with its many 2D shooters. Besides, as someone else said, the PS3 will feature the same basic PS2 architecture which is friendly to arcade ports. Still more than a little life left in the genre even if we get really small print runs.

Hijacking the thread a little - but the Revolution is the first Nintendo product I've been at all interested in for a long time. I hope they release more details soon.petrolhead wrote:I intend to keep the DC, but the PS2 will probably be replaced with a PS3(backwards compatible psx and ps2).

Looking good at the moment, i hope the Nintendo do deliver with the Rev.

Sorry to bring back such an old topic, but how do most people feel by the fact that the X-Box 360 is the only remaining system (please correct me if I'm wrong) to harbor 2D & 2.5D shooters today, 5 years later?!
Kind of ironic if you ask me that Japanese consoles like the PS-3, actually rejected the genre.
After all, weren't Shooters 1st made big and widely known & spread by Japanese developers and should it be considered a "Japanese" Genre?

Blimey.
I was reading the posts that I made from 5 years ago. And how did it turn out?
Well, my favourite shooters are still PS2 that I play on my 60gb PS3 and a selection of the old shooters are downloadable on 360, and PS3.
Wartech on 360 is the only shmup that I have as a retail release.
What am I missing for 360 and PS3?

How does the "genre" of a game have anything to do with the company that creates a console?ST Dragon wrote:After all, weren't Shooters 1st made big and widely known & spread by Japanese developers and should it be considered a "Japanese" Genre?

Were you actually reading this specific thread which I just revived too? because if that's so, all I have to say about that is that great spirits meet one way or the other!...I was reading the posts that I made from 5 years ago. And how did it turn out?

So I take you have one of the earlier PS-3 models? I heard that they ditched backwards PS-2 compatibility all together on the recent models...?Well, my favourite shooters are still PS2 that I play on my 60gb PS3 and a selection of the old shooters are downloadable on 360, and PS3..
Wartech? Is that even a traditional 2D / 2.5D Horizontal / Vertical shooter?Wartech on 360 is the only shmup that I have as a retail release.
No idea, I was going to ask the same thing too...What am I missing for 360 and PS3?
apparently there is an X-Box 360 list here:
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... 01&start=0
But I have no idea how good or bad they are...
Raiden IV, Death Smiles & Otomedius Gorgeous would probably interest me the most, but I find un-promising to run into all this trouble just to play a couple of region-locked games. As the rest of the games on the Next-Gen consoles, don't interest even in the slightest.

Nothing in this case, it just so happens that the PS-3 & Wii are Japanese and the argument is whether the genre is actually Japanese or not, there for to justify a support by the said Japanese console companies.manaka wrote:How does the "genre" of a game have anything to do with the company that creates a console?ST Dragon wrote:After all, weren't Shooters 1st made big and widely known & spread by Japanese developers and should it be considered a "Japanese" Genre?

Re: Will the PS2 be the last great console for 2d shmups?
Actually catch this, retail shmups never happened (and won't) on PS-3 because Sony has very high requirements that involve HD graphics which means no low-res (pixel art) unless you're very lucky, 16:9, publishers/developers HAVE to follow what they must do by S-head's orders (even if it means changing graphics), they must say only nice words about Sony ONLY otherwise they will put them on a blacklist AND the titles have to be digital (talking about shmups respectively). Blacklist means Sony will reject publisher/developer permamently btw. Not to mention there are tons of costs and that you have to be very lucky for Sony to accept your offer/product. Simply, sony is being an asshole about 2D-only games and only few exceptions are allowed.ST Dragon wrote:Nothing in this case, it just so happens that the PS-3 & Wii are Japanese and the argument is whether the genre is actually Japanese or not, there for to justify a support by the said Japanese console companies.manaka wrote:How does the "genre" of a game have anything to do with the company that creates a console?ST Dragon wrote:After all, weren't Shooters 1st made big and widely known & spread by Japanese developers and should it be considered a "Japanese" Genre?

And to answer the topic's question, yes PS2 is the last great console for 2d shmups. 360 may have many shmups from cave however it doesn't make it best because the shmup library on ps2 is way better that's one, second is that you actually have to buy a japanese 360 instead of modding your ps2 for imports.
PS. This is a rumor however there is no other logical explanation.

So Sony's need for HD games is possibly part of the reason why I don't have Gradius VI? MOTHER...
