Gears of War 2

Post by zap »

It's out!

I haven't ordered my copy yet, because I'm not sure the US version is playable on a Japanese 360. Videogameplus says region free but that only applies for PAL machines (I've asked). Anyone who can confirm it?

This thread is now about Left 4 Dead. Who's already got it? I'm not sure when I'll be picking up my copy, but I'll probably play through it sometime with forum members...if they're still interested by the time I pick it up, that is

Back on topic...I still haven't played GoW1, I should install it sometime soon and see what I think of it.

been running a US gears 2 on a japanese 360 since last night.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Double the confirmation... thanks! Seriously, I needed to know this since my US 360 crapped out on me. I suspected that I could, since Epic always does the region free thing on the 360, but wasn't sure.

Picking up my copy in a few hours...

And what, has this game been so overhyped that noone cares for it anymore? Or just alot of other great games coming out too?

Played campaign co-op for a couple of hours at a friends house last night, it was solid, fun and pretty, but nothing amazing. Then again the original didn't make me cream my pants either

I think it's just the board we're on. This game just doesn't appeal to most around here I gather.

I played this from the evening to 3 in the morning last night. Horde mode with four friends is a blast. We kept swapping maps just to check them out but couldn't get past wave 17 on Hardcore. Insane is just ridiculous.

We were going to try some versus player matches after one of our guys called it a night, but matchmaking is a little broken right now and it couldn't find us a 5th for our team. I went ahead and made a private match of Annex with Insane bots on the opposing team and we proceeded to get our asses handed to us. The bots in this on the hardest setting are some of the most intelligent I've ever seen in a game. They aren't really unfair, just smart and very aggressive.

Haven't spent much time with campaign. Hard to resist the other stuff when you've got tons of friends on playing.

campaign is the best part.... 5 player co-op

plus you'll get to see just how good the game can look during it. you'll have fun.

yeah I think it's the board... holding on to older style games. I hold onto the older style but will except the new also. i just don't want older styles to go away at the same..... I don't like the idea of replacing but do like the idea off adding to the table.

when I was buying gears 1 I was really thinking this was gonna be a return. I was shocked and loved it... especially at the time it was the 1st game to really show what next gen could do.

I had preordered a copy, but have yet to open it. I gotta "finish" Fallout 3 first or else I never will.

Played campaign for about an hour. There's probably better to come, but it feels almost like Gears 1 never happened which is weird. There's not much retreading of the original story, so it does feel a little 'forced' when the action suddenly heats up.

Great fun still, but I'm hoping for some of the variety and atmosphere from the first game.

I totally agree with you, Skykid. There are some mentions of events of the first game, but not much more. I played the first one many times over on all difficulty levels, and enjoyed it a lot.

Played this one with a mate yesterday night (first 2 chapters). It seems the action is quite predictable and a bit repetitive. You run up a little hill, you see lots of debris for cover, well, you know you have to stop there, kill bad guys, rinse and repeat. A fun game, really, and very well done, but I think they'll have to come up with some new gameplay elements for Gears 3. Maybe I haven't played this one enough though, but this is my feeling so far.

what do you guys think of the multiplayer matches? i'm really disliking them for a few reasons

1. it takes forever to get a match started with the new matchmaking system.
2. you can't pick what game type you want to play.
3. the game you waited 5-10 minutes to start up takes 5-10 minutes to play. and then you are back to waiting.
4. shotgun is nerfed hard. especially when trying to hipfire.

first and foremost they need to bring the player match system back. it worked perfectly. pick what game mode you wanted to play, set the maps to cycle, pick how many rounds you wanted to play per map, invite your friends and then play for as long as you wanted. now you can play private matches and invite friends in, but playing with bots just isn't the same.

i guess i just wanted gears of war 1 with more maps, weapons, game types, and more efficient online coding. this isn't it at all.

Matchmaking needs some tweaking. Me and my friends weren't able to get into ranked matches for the first couple of days, but now it's working fine for us as of yesterday. I was even able to find a match pretty quickly by myself. I think it just needs time to become more streamlined, then people will be getting dropped into games no problem. This is the usual case with online titles this big. I don't mind the voting of maps, but they need to make separate playlists for each game mode. There are only seven modes of play, so it's not like it'd be a huge list or anything.

As for the game play itself, it just feels way different than Gears 1 did. I put a lot of hours into that game online and I feel like I'm going to with this one as well, but it's definitely going to take some adjusting. You basically need to unlearn everything from the first game and just practice with this one all over again.

The shotgun issue is something I can get used to really. It was an annoyance in the first game to me. You were basically forced to use it in retarded situations because people just loved to rush in with it out and commence with the dancing around each other until someone got that lucky shot off. Don't get me wrong, the weapon took skill, but the shot on it was so random and there was too much luck involved. Now, shooting from the hip with it is crazy inaccurate. It's pretty effective when aiming though. I'm sure that was Epic's intention. I fucking love the new Hammerburst and Boltok. Those things are complete beasts. All the other new weapons are pretty neat too.

Horde mode is what I've been playing with friends the most. It's pretty damn hard. I haven't spent as much time with the campaign as I'd like to, but what I've seen of it is amazing IMO. It's just so much more epic in scale than the first. And that giant worm level was awesome.

Overall, I really like the game, but it's just going to take some getting used to after having played the first Gears for two years.

Just beat it, very pleased with the game, Looking forward to online co-op and horde. Haven't tried multiplayer yet but I'm liking the revised game mechanics, things are much easier to pull off now + new ways to kill are always nice.

Bit pissed off with the plot, Locust Queen WTF? but some great levels in there. I'm going to give Gears 1 a play through again later, never did beat RAAM on hardcore or get all the cog tags.

I'm thinking the Locust have some connection with the humans... like they used to be humans. Who knows though.

I honestly could give a shit about the story in Gears at all. It's all about the gameplay for me. I was just sick of Dom whining about his wife the whole time and was frankly relieved once that whole subplot was done and over with.

+1 for thread win
I hate story lines in games. I just wanna get from point A to point B. Fuck a story.

I did beat the thing, rather underwhelming if you ask me (and I really liked the first one)

Gears 1 had a climax, albeit with no coherence.

Gears 2 ended with a whimper, and while it was more coherent, more or less ignored the results of the first Gears.

I am looking forward to see what they do with Gears 3, though the "Locust are/were human!" sci-fi 101 plot will probably be the backbone of it - despite being beaten to death in this one.

Eventually I will take it online. Since listening to prepubescent shrieking and profanity gets old quickly, I'm relieved that they have added bots this time around.

How often are X360 games released region free?

Relatively often in America. Typically, Western devs release don't care about region coding, and Japanese developers like to keep their properties tied down.

Then perhaps getting a JP360 wouldn't be such a bad idea after all... :o

With the new party feature, it's like no one exists but the people in your party. It's great. Make some friends and give it a go.

I finished it yesterday, working on the second run now. Have to do at least 4 runs if you want all offline achievements.

Totally awesome game overall, but the final boss was a little meh. And I'd rather have seen an ending like the first one, where it's not obvious that there'll be a next game.

It should. Most fun action since shumps. :/

As shitty as this game is, do any of you still play it regularly? I've put enough time in (lv 52) to not suck completely even when the lag is teleporting me around the screen. Let's team up.
