Any good fiction to read set in Japan?

Post by JigsawMan »

Can anyione recommend some good books to read set in Japan? Since reading all the Dan Brown books I feel like reading something different. I also watched the last Samurai the other night and that got me thinking about reading some books about samauai and ninja's and the like... yeah, I know, at 26 years I should have probbaly grown up somewhat by now... but I haven't.

So, any good suggestions?

Well, it doesn't have ninjas or samurai but Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore would be the best translated title currently on the market. Its astonishing.

Look no further than James Clavell's SHOGUN. Holy crap that book is fun to read. 1200 pages of entertainment!

Spring Snow by Yukio Mishima. Great writer all around, but that's my favorite of his.

Koji Suzuki: Ring
Koji Suzuki: Spiral
Koji Suzuki: Loop

Yes, it´s a trilogy :)

Ryo Murakami: Into the Miso Soup
Taichi Yamada: Strangers

None of these contain samurai btw. Contemporary Japan.

The Temple of the Golden Pavilion- Yukio Mishima

It nearly brought me to tears

I only own this from Yukio Mishima, I plan to purchase the others in time and when I'm not broke :)

Read Idoru by William Gibson. Great sci-fi mixed with plenty of Japanese pop-culture.

the wind-up bird chronicle is pretty good. it's starts strong but kinda loses steam toward the end, but overall is a solid read.
say, by the way...

and in the meantime, it's gone away....
