disappointed with thunder force 2....

Post by sjewkestheloon »

i really am. been looking for it for a whil;e as i've heard very good things about them all on the megadrive and i'm pretty annoyed to say the least. i wasn't aware of any overhead levels originally, and i accept them as an interesting idea, but they are just sooo bloody dull. the random enemy spawn is just irritating too. change direction quickly and you are almost guarenteed to run into an enemy that was nowhere to be seen 1 second before. the side scrolling levels seems pretty good but i really can't be bothered to play through the rubbish to get there. gutted...

The overhead stages are a throwback to the first game, which was completely overhead.

But yeah, TFII is a little rough around the edges. Most of that was greatly improved in part 3.

Yeah tough luck man, you wanna be playing Thunder Force III and IV, they got rid of the crap top view levels in those games.

The hori levels in TFII arn't bad though, but yeah those top view levels (except 1) are garbage.

I find some of the TF2 hori stages to be more entertaining (and difficult) than some of the stuff in TF3 and 4.

The overhead levels are shit, though  No argue there.

I don't play TFII anymore because of those overhead levels. In fact, the last time I actually popped it in my Genesis was back in '97, when I bought the damn game.

It would've been okay If you had a map at the corner of the screen or something.... but noooooo! I'm just left flying round aimlessy while enemies pop out of nowhere like a bad ghost ride.

What are you supposed to do in those top down perspective levels anyway? I got bored after some mindless shooting :)
The hori levels seem pretty nice though...

shoot some enemies open those "gates" to kill more enemies then once all destroyed level complete blah!

It's just so long and boring for me, I've only seen the second level twice, I just cant be bothered playing that first overhead level.

The overhead levels can be annoying...but with some dedicated practice, one can cruise through all of em in less than 3 minutes each. Sometimes even less. So, they're really not that bad.
Also, the horzie stages are some of the best for that time period...which is still frikkin good today.

Yeah, the hori stages in TFII are surprisingly quite impressive, especially that city stage, and that weird museum stage towards the end. I remember I used to wish those stages wouldn't end so fast, cos I knew what was coming next.

Actually though, I thought the Top down museum stage wasn't too bad, definatly thought it was better than the others.

This level should take 50 seconds. There are bonuses awarded for time.

The second overhead stage can be finished in 20-30 seconds. Just memorize the directions you need to take. It really isn't complicated. Like maybe 4 stops in a z-shaped pattern. Simple. On the third overhead stage I crash though a wall to save time. 8)

Fantastic game overall, overhead and side-scrolling. Makes TF3 seem a little watered down.

The goal is to destroy those ground base's. You don't need to shoot down certain enemies. The base's "core" is always in the center of the structure.
All the other stuff are either flying ships or gun turrets..

To blast through the first level, shoot those "prongs" that portrude ftom the "walls". Also, there is usually 1 base in each area.
Its actually quite short and easy.
If I remember correctly my pattern was like this...

The first Base should be up from where you start...second should be to the left, then down, then back to the right. There should only be two "prongs" to shoot to gain entry.
If I could make video's, I'd just show ya...it only takes less than a minute like Rob said.
The other are easy when you know where to go.
You gotta be "twitchy" though...the enemies to show up on screen pretty fast, but your ship can turn on a dime.

Is there any other way? 8) I've seriously never found a legitamate way through the level at that point.

The purple-ish Red rock/cave level...?
Yea, I have an easy pattern for that one, however, I have to suicide/sacrifice one ship to break through to the last area.
I guess if one was playing for a "perfect" (no life loss) you would have to wait and shoot down some enemies (its takes about 5 kills, thats when a powerup is left behind) hopefully you'd get lucky and get one of those shields...as this would allow you to fly through those rocks to get to the last base.

The alternative to the Rob method is winding through a narrow craggy passageway that would take an extra 45-60 seconds and probably kill you 3 times anyways. I think they wanted you to crash through the wall.

The overhead stages in the X68000 version are even more fun. You actually have to time your ground shots - the rate of fire isn't fast enough to sweep over as in the MD version.

Erm... well bro, seeing as how Thunder Force 2 is probably the 2nd worst of the series (I guess the original would be the worst), I'd say give III and IV a shot before giving up on the series. Both of those games are fantastic. V is OK, but nowhere near as good as III and IV IMO. More of an excursion into the world of "Hey! You like this series! Check out this nostalgia! Isn't this cool! 3D! Wheeeee!"

well i've given it another go and i'm afraid it's going to the bottom of the pile for a while at least. might come back later and have another crack.

however i did manage to find super aleste for the snes for 2 pounds in a small stock cupboard that the staff at my local store had forgotten about. needless to say it definately seems more my cup of tea, and i can see myself putting plenty of time into it.

mad ethe fatal error of becomeing re-addicted to mario kart though..... all my and the gf do at the mo
