Do fixed/shooting gallery shmup still alive?

Post by Alsagoz »

There are a lot of shmupers here so I decide to post my first topic about this issue. >_<

Do fixed/shooting gallery shmup still alive? For me, I'm sure it's still alive but overshadowed by modern shmups.

Since shmup evolve from the test of accuracy/pure reflex skills to massive bullet hell. Fixed shooters are still here but mostly are remakes/clones. I think with some recent technology/game design/idea can be use to improve this sub-genre in various ways rather than get better points from killing enemy outside formations like chaining kills (Cave shmups), kill enemy in color set (Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun), crazy medal chaining and etc. but that may not be an auto-fire fest any way :P. With fixed shmups...

- Some games give accuracy rating to encourage aiming skill which is nice. May be only fixed shmups can use this scheme to the best.
- Most fixed shooters can be unpredicable which suit for replayability (like enemy breaking from formation in random fashion).

Modern shmups are good as they are now but I think someone should give it a big hand in terms of game design don't you think so ?

Are there still any good galaxian/galaga-style shmups out there (well... not warblade!) :?:.

Have you tried Space Bomber by Psikyo?

It's not "brand new", but it's really good.

although it didn't have the one-dimentional movement restriction, Nomltest felt a lot like Galaga to me, at least in terms of the graphics and enemy patterns.

The games posted so far are all solid bets. I would add one that is a little bit of a rail shooter, but that I feel falls into the gallery shooter genre as well:

Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ

In case you haven't heard of it it's a recently released budget priced DS game.

The website can be found here

A video showing how it plays can be found here

Anyways I thought it was fun.
To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders.
