What's the ugliest language you've ever heard?
I'm very interested in languages, and have been in contact with lots of them over the course of the years. This topic could easily turn into a bitching war due to the subjective nature of the question, which is not something I'm looking for. Just want to hear your thoughts, as obviously, we all have different ears and percieve sounds differently based on what we know. For the record, French is my mother tongue, and I speak equally English and Spanish as second languages. Random opinions/observations based on nothing:
-Germanic languages in general (Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Dutch and German) thoroughly impress me every single time I hear them.
-The cyrillic alphabet >all.
-Oral Chinese isn't as hard as I had imagined.
-Arabic is a bitch to read and write.
-Of all the languages I've heard first hand, Hungarian and Inuktitut are the ones I really disliked.

Finnish is actually a Finno-Ugric language (more on Wikipedia) and is very different from the other ones you listed.
Whether it's an ugly language or not is a different matter...

How much do regional accents play a part?
I don't know about other countries but there are thousands of different accents and dialects in the UK, many of them highly annoying.

Finish and the other european languages have a lot of similarities to each other including finish. But they fail in coparission to the awesomeness of gods language. . . English!

You're right. When I came down to writing Finnish, I did write it, erased it, thought for 3 seconds, and wrote it again. I knew in the back of my mind it didn't belongGhegs wrote:Objection!KindGrind wrote:-Germanic languages in general (Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Dutch and German) thoroughly impress me every single time I hear them.

I used to live in hong kong and I used to be quite good at canton (more so than my english) I would struggle with on how to pronounce things in english but canton was easier for me. not anymore thoughIlMrm wrote:Cantonese. Don't believe me, spend a couple of minutes in a Chinese tea house.

No offense, but really... do they even know vowels exist? They make something like "pra onde fostes?" sound like "prndfsts?".
Also, for some reason I don't like how spanish sounds.

name me some similarities between Finnish and other European languages (excluding Hungarian ok). i know a fair bit or more of Dutch, English, German, Norwegian, and a tiny bit of Icelandic, and when i did a project on Finnish for a linguistics class it sure didn't seem more similar to those than Japanese does, save for the letters. didn't the Finugrian branch of languages split of from the other proto-languages of Europe some 6000 years ago?
on-topic:
i hate the sounds of French (sorry OP), but my native language (Dutch) isn't far behind.
i like the sound of Finnish (though i'm mostly going by their folk music), Norwegian, UK English, and Japanese. also, Japanese grammar wins.
