xcom - enemy unknown/ufo defense
anyone played/play this game? im well chuffed, just found a nice version on the net that comes prepacked and modded with dosbox and a little front end so you can actually play this gem properly on your new up todate pc.
I whilled away many years of my life playing this on amiga cd32, then ps1, then old pc, then got an updated version for pentium, now have found this and am about to give our lass a celebratory slap and tickle im so pleased!!

haven't played it in ages, but when it came out for Amiga I was all over it. The story and atmosphere in the game is excellent.
Moved on the Terror from the Deep, which wasnt as good, but even harder (shakes fist at super explosive small black flying discs).
I mean c'mon. You start out with basic scuba gear and a dart gun? and youre supposed to take on crabmen with sonic riffles? yeah right.
Didn't play Apocalypse as it was real time and it put me off. Havent played the new UFO games Aftermath/shock or whatever its called.
I want this game for PS1

is the shit! i thought TFTD was a lot better actuallyxcom - enemy unknown/ufo defense
your right everything after TFTD was shit in comparison. If they were to make it again they should take it back to its roots and re do it from the ground up. it being basic is what made it so good.

Xcomutil makes the original game and TftD a lot more user-friendly. I use it with the Windows port of X-COM, but if you run xcusetup from Windows then use xcomtuil in DOSBox it'll work fine.
There's also a mod on the xcomutil forums to undo the few unprompted changes if they bother you.

Rebelstar: Tactical Command for GBA was good. It's designed by the same guy who did the original X-COM/Rebelstar/Laser Squad games, and while it totally lacks the base building & worldmap of X-COM, the actual tactical combat is a bit better.Lordstar wrote:everything after TFTD was shit in comparison.
This game is epic; played it a lot back in the day. I liked TFTD more, but I was never able to finish that one.
Just a FYI: The difficulty setting on both games are bugged. On the first one, no matter what difficulty you choose, it'll always set to beginner. And on TFTD, it'll always set to superhuman
no wonder it's so hard.
Not to mention all the research tree bugs on TFTD. If you research things on the wrong order, you won't be able to use some weapons or might even make the game unwinnable
Still, the whole underwater setting is awesome.
As for the other X-COM games, the only one I liked was Interceptor, but it's a totally different game (base management/ship dogfights) set in space.

I like Apocalypse the best of the series. Lots more options for developing your squad, much more detailed tactical environments. Excellent balance. For the record, only the management section of it is real-time. The tactical battles can (and in order to be playable, must) be set to turn-based. It's still the same great game play from the first one.1up wrote:Didn't play Apocalypse as it was real time and it put me off.
I remember the original on the Amiga, used to have a really slow load time, still loved it though, i was well into Advanced Space Crusade and Space Hulk by Games Workshop at the time and this was as close as a computer could get
great stuff!

Re: xcom - enemy unknown/ufo defense
Try UFO: Alien Invasion (http://ufoai.sourceforge.net/). I was really impressed when I gave it a go. It's a modern, constantly-evolving game in the spirit of the original X-COM games.Guardians Knight wrote:anyone played/play this game? im well chuffed, just found a nice version on the net that comes prepacked and modded with dosbox and a little front end so you can actually play this gem properly on your new up todate pc.
