Lets talk about Thunder Force

Post by Makoto Sei »

I`m just wondering, how many people here that really care about the story of a shooting game. Because until this time all i have read here on this Shmups forum this far are more about on what console the game were release or how the the gaming system, what feature that added on the game, or haw does the graphic work.

I`m also part of group that not so satisfied by TF VI`s game play, but i can forget it because for me the story is the main thing that i`m awaiting for. Now, who else are stupid enough to think like me ^^; lets join here to talk about TF`s story and how the story would develop on the future. Maybe some off you have a high imagination on how the next TF series will work, what scene that could make next TF series feels more satisfying then the previous series, so then people will play it not just for graphic and scoring, but also more concentrate to the story.

Well, as a start, i thinking that Orn Emperor were not the only Orn that exist, or at least the one that we beat on TF VI are still not the real one (considering that Orn Emperor on TF VI are far easier to beat than The Guardian).

heh, for stories, I think Diadra Empty and Steel Saviour have pretty neat ones. However, Diadra Empty' story doesn't come with the game but in a little book xP It has some Ikarugaish way of telling things with english text at the beginning of the chapters and the ending but that's about it. You might like Steel Saviour for the story then (you literally go in a surreal trip underground to restore the elements on the surface using ancient technology) but remember it's not TF and it's brutal for the unprepared...

So, yeah, I usually care about the story when it just excels the usual standards of "big bad guy wants to take over something". I prefer the variation "the comp went crazy and owned us all" (Guardian's Heart, AlltynexOS from Siter Skain, Alpha Core from Omega Boost, etc.)

From what I read and has been commented, TFVI has a pretty 'standard' story with a tyrant emperor included. And that fugly head just doesn't feel like the emperor of nothing, one would be expecting a planet-sized battleship with Bodolza from Macross =P

Personally, story-wise, TFV was probably the greatest, especially for those brief Panzer Dragoon hints and the awesome boss descriptions that I mentioned not so long ago. Tribute, homage or whatever, it felt quite clever and creative and speaks of Sega's past glory... Pity we never saw a TF/PD crossover. I bet it would've been awesome beyond reason with the highest doses of artistic weirdness, biomechanical oddities, huge battleships and more.

Still, the sanskrit and overall epicness of the boss presentation is still present in TFVI despite most bosses will last less than 5 seconds.

I really like R-Type's story. I've been playing Giga Wing lately, and the little bits of story are cute. Gives me more motivation to 1CC it as everyone.

Even though I'm not satisfied with TF6, it's still a really good shooter. I have no clue what the story is Thunderforce games are about, all I know is that I love Thunderforce games :)

If your looking for an Action/Shooter with a very deep story, check out Panzer Dragoon.

Panzer Dragoon is one of my all time favorite franchise. Panzer Dragoon -> Panzer Dragoon Zwei -> Panzer Dragoon Saga -> Panzer Dragoon Orta

The Panzer Dragoon Saga is the only RPG in the series which explains a lot of what happened on previous game.

Anyways check it out

I had a look on wikipedia to try to get my head round the TFVI story( cos I'm enjoying the game so much now Syrinx has arrived :D ) and the developement from the TFV story's really fairly subtle and complex.Faced with the Orn threat, the Earth's forces have to reevaluate the Vasteel technology which caused so much trouble before, and begin to discover its true nature and original purpose. They are led back to the Federation and must also reappraise their understanding of what happened to Guardian and Guardian's ambivalent role in the whole story.
TFVI doesn't just carry on from V but actually sheds new light on the previous events, rewriting the history of TFV.
OOOeeerrr! It's like English Literature but in Japanese and I'm sure if we all thought hard enough we could find parallels with Shakespeare and Greek Mythology...the bosses are still crap though :)

I'm actually satisfied with TFVI, but it could have benefited from having 2 more stages. While Sega changed it so you don't lose weapons with the Phoenix (which does devalue the Twin and Back shot a bit), you still can lose weapons with Rynex-R.

In light of Khaos being the original Orn Emperor, TFVI's final boss does seem awfully strange for the series. It's not so tough compared to Guardian or TF4's final boss. Maybe this certain Orn Emperor spawned from the Bio-Base in TF4.

In TF5, Khaos monkeyed with Guardian to cause it to flip out, seeing an opportunity while it analyzed the Rynex- which also was itself possessed by Khaos.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Wohooo ! so i`m not the only one who care about shooting games`s story (especially TF). Glad to hear that.

I was trying to download and install it, but some unknown problem occur, so until now i haven`t play it, i really hope i`ll be able to play it, more over because of your little description about the major story there.
From what I read and has been commented, TF VI has a pretty 'standard' story with a tyrant emperor included. And that fugly head just doesn't feel like the emperor of nothing, one would be expecting a planet-sized battleship with Bodolza from Macross
hey, we have the same thought here :) to know that finally we fight face to face with Orn emperor, but latter on we know how it looks and what kind of battle that take place... really, its disappoint me. I`m agree that battling The Guardian are far more thrilling than Orn Emperor. When fight the Guardian, we still have to running across the screen to avoid it`s attacks, but with Orn... c`mon... our star fighter have more ability than just moving up and down just to dodge the attack :) and another thought about Orn Emperor :" huh , this is Orn Emperor ? the one that have a massive troop that disturbing the Federation over 100 years and almost annihilating them ? too poor !! out of finance maybe :D" (maybe latter i will hear some one shout out there and say :" that`s the developer who suffer insufficient of fund, not the Orn !!" :D

Yes, a planet size fortress are more appropriate for final boss. Remember the description of the final stage ? it said that we have too destroy the Orn Emperor tha reside on the deepest part of the fortress ? man... Cha-Os place on TF 3 are really deep indeed, but Orn`s ? i believe that just joking. For fighting the Orn Emperor directly, i`m imagine that we would face 3 or more boss unit from each stage ( sound crazy i`m sure, but its make sense if we looking from the situation, OR... the other boss unit displayed on the background where our comrade are fighting them... would be looks like a colossal fight )
Personally, story-wise, TFV was probably the greatest
this is the reason i`m fall in love with TF series deeper and deeper each time i play them. Yes, i`m already read your description about Panzer Dragoon. I haven`t played the game because video game`s console could consider as exclusive thing on my country ^^; but if both of the series combined, i can imagine what you think about it, but maybe it will looks like Final Fantasy, and for the background music will using track from "Thunder Force Ranaissance"... wow !! that`s really great !! I bet the weapon system will including magic.
Mortificator wrote: I really like R-Type's story. I've been playing Giga Win
I played R-Type too because the similarity of the ships design (and because its side scroll shooting with many "natural obstacle" on the stages). But some time R-type could frustating for me ^^; and i`m
not so understand the story , well... i do understand the basic, similar with TF`s stories, about man vs machine, but for me TFs have something special like the gameplay, the weapon system, the background, especially the music, and many other thing

Yeah, that`s some point of this thread, to discuss the story :)
Who ever imagine that Orn`s force will finally arrive to our solar system. I doubt this part of Orn force were wandering aimlessly on this galaxy and suddenly they say :" hey, there is solar system with life on its 3rd planet... lets attack them !" wouldn`t they (or they does ?:D) Could it be the Orn Faust that reside on the "Guardian`s Heart" call them ? if it does, well... how cleaver of Orn. Maybe Orn it self never imagine that there is another life form on this galaxy.

The most agreeing part :) could it be that this "Orn Emperor" of TF VI were not the "Original Orn" ? remember "Son Go Kou" of Dragon Ball Z ? that at first we thought he were a strongest human on the world, then we faced to the reality that he just one of Saiyan tribe ? could it be that Orn have duplicates of it self (considering from TF 3`s stories)
In TF5, Khaos monkeyed with Guardian to cause it to flip out, seeing an opportunity while it analyzed

the Rynex- which also was itself possessed by Khaos.
Guardian manipulated by Cha-Os, Cha-Os surprized about another race beside the Federations that exist in this galaxy and (there is a possibility that) Cha-Os summon a reinforcement to the main force... so,out from Cha-Os`s problem, could it be any relation between Human of Earth with "human" of Federation ?

maybe you have to try it.
Honestly the first TF that i know were TF 3 by watching my friend play it on his home. Compared to another shooting game, TF is something. Start from the ship`s design that not use side wing like common ship on shooting game, the weapon system that looks extremely useful but not make the game easier (on some point maybe), the stages, the boss design, the music. And i skip TF IV because i don`t have the console. I just remember the cover design about new design of it ship (i saw it when the game was displayed on the game center). Some years latter i have a chance to play TF V. At the opening FMV i saw about Earth`s unmanned space ship who collect a star ship like unit, there i remember the ship design hat i saw on TF IV`scover and i think that TF V have a very close connection to the 4th. Some years latter finally i got TF IV (from my friend) on emulator format and after play it, i`m agree that TF IV is the best FOR the gaming system.
I love TF V ONCE AGAIN, because it`s Ship Design (and since then, every time i draw a fighter, the basic design always from RVR. you could Visit gallery at www.makotosei.deviantart.com, and try to look on machinery)
The Guardian`s Knight have a special place on my heart. Cool design, transformation, attack movement. The transformation event where RVR-01 ----> RVR-02 are unforgotable. And "Last Letter" are the touching
part... well, how it couldn`t ? i mean, after facing numerous machine army, huge bosses with heavy metal music, fierce battle against the Guardian it self, and then we were heard final message from Guardian it self with piano base music as it BGM... really unforgettable

Now, another thought about Thunder Force (the 6th especially):

- I just wish we could use Brigandine unit that used by Phoenix to fight the Orn force while on Earth a moment before the Phoenix do some kind of space warp to the federation`s origin. (on TF VII maybe ?)

- Could it be any Thunder Force Zero ? ^^; considering the trend this past years where many tittle using "Zero" as part of the titles. Maybe it would about the very beginning of conflict between Orn and Federation, the creation of Orn, who design it, why it going like this way now, what is and how far advanced are the Federation ( remembering that technology that were "extracted" from Rynex have a very big influence on Earth`s technology )

- could it be that TF VII would take place back on Earth ? this thought based on Federation`s message that we got from normal ending.

- Could it be there is another "Orn" ? this assumption based on a scene that showed us an image about small blue planet during "Bad Ending" (and i`m sure that not Earth because its just as size as moon) or there is any possibility that the little Blue planet were Federation`s. If that the case, why Orn specially targeting the planet ?

- How many years passed on the Federation`s side during the event of TF V? TF 3 are 100 years after the first, TF 4 right after the 3rd, while we don`t have any clue how many years has past since destruction of Orn Faust until Rynex was discovered by Earth scientist on 2106 A.D. On the 3rd stage of TF IV, we were fight among unknown fleet above some city, could it be the same city of Federation`s ? since the 4th until the 6th, they still doing the same thing ? ^^; weird

- Description about 5th stage :" Pursue the battleship in collaboration with Federation..." well, in the game we are the only one who chase it. If only the other Rynexs were shown on the background (like stage 5 of TF V)... it would become more exciting.

- What !? Orn Emperor only have a single battle ship of Cerberus 2 class ?? what happen with other type of battle ship that attack Earth ? once more, Does Orn Emperor really have problem with finance :D

- What does "Operation 3" stand for ? what are "Operation 1 & 2" ? or it just referring Thunder Force VI that being one of three of shooting game project that SEGA working on ?

- I`m forgot who, but i remember some one explain the possibility why Tsukumo Hyakutaro doesn`t inclued as TF VI staff. I have another thought that Tsukumo Hyakutaro him self are love thunder force series
very much. Why he consider to work on "Broken Thunder" maybe because he can`t stand to wait for the next TF series, so when some people come to his place and said that they will work on (maybe could consider as) doujin game that have connection with "thunder Force", he accept it without hesitate.

- i hope some day there is some one who like to make mini games and i could participating in creating the story, and if that happen i would make doujin of TF and i`ll name the game "Thunder Force Extention" :)

- Again, i hope there is some one who record the "Bad Ending" and "Good Ending" FMV of TV VI and uploading it on internet so i could ask my friend to translate what were said by Orn during "Bad Ending" and what are being said by Carol during "Good Ending"
