Do you have a shmup specialty?

Post by professor ganson »

Is there a kind of shooter or a particular shooter that you are particularly devoted to? (Even if you wouldn't call yourself an expert.) Or are you only a generalist shmup fan, not a specialist of any sort?

Bullet canceling shooters. I got hooked to those kinds of games after playing ESPgaluda. It's so cool whenever I get the whole screen to fill up with x100s.

I wish I could say Psikyo was my speciality but my natural talent for crashing into lone bullets pretty much counts that out.

I like danmaku games but I never seem to get good enough to 1cc those last few levels.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

The only game I'm not too bad is Border Down.

I suck at everything else.

Dragon Spirit & Dragon Saber - Love 'em both & 1CC'd them with very few tries.
I think riding dragons in shmups makes me automatically perform better. :D

I don't have a specialty per se, but somehow the shooters I end up playing most are the ones from the early to mid 90s, so late-Toaplan, early Cave, Raizing, the good stuff from Taito, Seibu, etc.

I wouldn't say I'm really good at anything, but in roughly decreasing order here is some stuff I like or I'm better at:

versus games
rank-heavy
lock-on targets
early to mid 90s
bullet manipulation

I'm pretty much dedicated to old school shooters and Toaplan in particular. Cleared all their PCBs on very hard except for Truxton on normal only.

Yes. Simple and rewarding.

Any game with a simple scoring system is alright with me.

Shikigami series fo sho. I actually try in that game and spent quite a bit of time playing Castle Shikigami 2 when it first came out.
It’s almost over. It’s just begun.

You might suck at shmups and still have specialist knowledge of some type of shmup. Or maybe a series or even just one shmup, knowing all sorts of trivia, for example.

The professor is correct.
I suck at shmups but I do have a specialty.

My friends have said that I am a Compile specialist.
I enjoy their games very much and actually play them at a competent level.

Everyone may lack skillsets on many games but there is usually that one that make us look like legendary all-stars.

Yeah, and even if you don't play any games particularly well, you might still know a lot about them. Some people have crazy knowledge about their favorite company's releases, for example. That's specialist knowledge, as I'm thinking of it.

Pretty much any vertical danmaku/bullet hell STG. I love small hitboxes and patterns. Plus it makes for a lot of fun in navigating them.

I'm starting to get very nearly decent at Dodonpachi, but I love almost all kinds of vertical shmups (even a handful of horis), and switch it up when DDP is frustrating me =)

I don't specialise. It's more fun for me, that way.

If you specialise, you breed in weakness.
