Javelina is cool. Personally, I dig Buzzov*en, Eyehategod, Thou, Leechmilk, Mugwart, Fistula, 16, etc etc... I could go on for awhile. Doom/sludge is my favorite genre.

Boris is one of my favorite bands, next to Envy and Thursday.gabe wrote:I dabble in sludge, but wouldn't consider myself anywhere near being a true fan of the genre. I will occasionally spin some Isis, Boris, Mastodon, Crowbar, etc. That's really about it though. True sludge fans may not consider those examples sludgy enough. Not sure.
Crowbar's really old shit is really good, and same with Mastodon. Wasn't the biggest fan of Blood Mountain, though. Anything after Oceanic from Isis sucks, in my opinion.
Any fans of Electric Wizard?
I've been rocking Witchcult Today in my car lately, though Dopethrone is my personal favorite. The chorus in "Wizard in Black" is one of my top moments in music.tommyb wrote: Any fans of Electric Wizard?

I think there's a lot of overlap, but they're pretty distinct. I wouldn't call Electric Wizard a sludge band. Sludge bands are usually more intense, more violent, more confrontational.Octopod wrote:Dystopia, Buzzov*en, Eyehategod, Thou
Electric Wizard is more Doom/Stoner metal is it not?
I mean i guess sludge and doom are close but one comes from the punk scene and the other from the metal scene. *shrug*
Eyehategod, specifically the first album.I'd like to get more into sludge, but I don;t know where to start really.

Yeahh, Dopethrone rules. And yeah, definately more stoner/doom, but I figured you guys would be into them.
Surprisingly enough, Premonitions of War's older stuff, especially their split with Benumb (who is great), was pretty decent sludge, really abrasive. And Nights Like These, who started off as a shitty scene-metal band on Victory Records with their first release, "The Faithless", released their latest CD, "Sunlight At Secondhand" and some of the stuff on it reminds me of Eyehategod the Sequel. Check out the song Bay of Pigs.
Oh, and has anyone heard Trap Them's new album? God damn, I swear to god that band can do no wrong.

I'M A HUGE SLUDGE FAN. I LOVE Eyehategod, Bongzilla, Grief, Cavity, etc. Shit man, I'm happy they're are more. I've got a sludge band of my own called the Old Ones. http://www.myspace.com/thegreatoldones.
I liked No Heroes, but it just didn't have the "WOW" factor that Jane Doe, or even Caring & Killing had. I saw Trap Them with Disfear at some bar in Lansing back in May I think, it was fucking incredible.brokenhalo wrote:
good comparison. both bands are amazing. converge hasn't wowed me since jane doe though. i don't know if they have another masterpiece in them.
It's not all slow. Goatsblood have some of the most savage sounding blastbeats I've ever heard.

Alright, I'm looking for some fairly specific sludge/doom recommendations. I'm hoping someone here can help me out.
I'm not terribly familiar with the genre(s) as I've just recently started exploring them. From my limited experience, I'm a big fan of Weedeater - God Luck and Good Speed. I love the slow powerful (but not quite droney) riffs, and the murkey (but not shitty) production. I also appreciate the fact that the vocals are discernible but still abrasive, as opposed to grumbles which basically turn the vocal track into another instrument. I've come to love Dystopia's self titled release for a lot of the same reasons.
Can anyone point me in the direction of anything similar?

You should check out I Am God Songs by Black Sheep Wall. In my mind, the best metal release of 2008 and unbelievably heavy and sludgy, but with amazing production and dynamics.gabe wrote:Alright, I'm looking for some fairly specific sludge/doom recommendations. I'd say Fistula and Ultralord. Just watch what Fistula stuff you buy cause they released a few albums of Sunn0))) style drone stuff. For a Better Tomorrow is fucking great, and the Ultralord CD "We Hate You and Hope You Die" is total class. They do the slow dirges and throw in some faster more straight up metal stuff too.gabe wrote:Alright, I'm looking for some fairly specific sludge/doom recommendations.
