Oh and those who have actually 1cc'ed a game do NOT belong on this thread;) I haven't even come remotely close to 1ccing ANYTHING and I've actually tried a few times. I <3 continues :D
what happened to that quote? who said what is all screwy??
No clue why its all screwy. Maybe shmups can't handle multiple quotes

Being down on himself isn't doing him anything. He needs to look at where he needs to improve and work from there. Take Mushi for example, he needs to look at his better runs and ask himself what stopped me from a 1cc rather then thinking I'm not good enough.

I don't see how he can get so down on himself when he has a wonderful family to support him. Its probably a bigger accomplishment to marry a woman who plays shmups then to have 1cce'd anything, let alone has a daughter who plays them.

Seriously arrow flash though.

I've just walked into the forum equivalent of a therapy session.
Also, I agree with the guy above me: it isn't about how bad you are, but what you are doing to improve your play. Bad play is born from bad practice habits.

Hes not down on himself. He just likes to sit there and act all stupid over it which really aggravates me. Hence my saying its easier to ignore his posts as if it didn't even exist.

Skill equates to faster pattern recognition and reflexes when situations arise. Practice mode equates to repeated trials to compensate for that which can't be overcome by comprehension or skill alone, but you gain the former in the process.

I remember someone saying that they do better in the Arcade because they're forced to play without a practice mode. That's entirely psychological.

This is true. It's easy to 'practice' shmups passively, which can cause you to fall into a rut. The more you practice bad habits, the harder they are to break... and that goes for anything, really, not just shmups.

Not learning from your own mistakes is one.
Playing "passive" - not planning new strategies, not experimenting with new techniques, not observing the game system in-play and devising new ways of manipulating it - is another.
It is one thing to say "I suck" all the time, and to idolise players who play better. It is entirely another to try and find ways to improve your own skills to get to that level of play you desire to attain.

Ive been playing Raiden 3 pretty much the last couple hours or so and i can not even beat my lowest score tonight. Now im playing on an HD tv in the living room instead of the CRT in the bedroom since my wife is sleeping but i dont think a different tv set should effect my play that much. Tonight i am offically sucking hard. This game is starting to piss me off and stop being fun.

Try a few runs on score attack. That helped smooth trouble areas out for me.

I take it you're the kind of person that expects skill to magically appear out of thin air.
There's a lot of fun to be had in delving deeper into a game and its systems. Just takes a little effort on the player's part.

That's something I'm really trying to avoid. It's hard though, as sometimes you have to take a backwards step.

For example, in Raiden III Double Play (my current STG fling), I've been plugging away for some time fine tuning a technique, and then I learned a few new tricks by mistake or from the superplay DVD, and now I'm trying to add them in it's really set me back. I can go back to my old technique and keep pushing my hi-score up a little, but I really need to focus on the new stuff if I'm to improve drastically, which means doing badly for a bit.

Also, Icarus, isn't it fair to say that occasionally playing 'passively' and doing the STG playing equivalent of letting you mind wander (letting your focussed approach wander) gives you a chance to discover things you might otherwise not discover? I guess though, that in doing that on purpose, it's actually not true passive play. Proactive-passive play perhaps.

I'm probably wrong!

Yeah and where exactly is the difference? Because I honestly can't see one.
You have to understand the grammar/scoring system first, otherwise you make incorrect sentences/poor score.
You have to speak/play again and again do get better at it.

The only thing they really differ is usefulness. There's no situation in life that expects from you to 2-All DOJ.

Yes, you will find that you go through a small period of actually doing worse when you try to incorporate new techniques into your play. The most important thing is to keep trying - you'll often find that the technique you're trying to work in needs a minor modification to fit your current routine/playing style before you start to become successful at pulling it off. Not trying to put too much in at once also helps - take it gradually.

This (bolded) is also true - I myself learn new techniques when I'm not playing for score at all, usually when I'm experimenting during stage practice or creditfeed plays.

You will find that a lot of players who constantly bemoan their lack of skills tend to do nothing of this nature to improve themselves. Even something as simple as figuring out your most difficult sections in a game and how to deal with them can bring improvement.

I think the approach to learning to skate (having to step back in ability to reassess your skill and try a different approach, and fine-tuning precise elements etc.) has helped me with developing my appraoch to improving shooter score.

That said, I'm still a low-level ability player, but in the past year I've become determined to focus my approach (something I never did before), while keeping it plain good fun. That's the balance I'm after, and relatively, I've improved a great deal. (Just one 1CC and no reputable scores by the end of 2007 - perhaps over half-a-dozen 1CC's now). From small acorns...

The technical fine-tuning approach is one thing I subscribe to - in all honesty, I never used to play at my current level, and it took a lot of effort on my part to get to where I am now, but even then there's still a long way to go. I am inconsistent, and lack confidence with some game styles, but it doesn't stop me from trying.

Level of play is irrelevant, as long as you're having fun competing with others and improving your play. That is all I would expect from anyone.
Grats on your latest achievements, by the way. ^_-

Last night, I made it to the halfway point of level 3 in Mars Matrix (PCB) after a mere 40 hours of play! (I'm pretty sure that's on topic and qualifies as "sucking").

Still no 1CCs under my belt either, though I *almost* made it through GG Aleste for Game Gear on my second try, as suggested earlier. With some practice might make it through entirely (but who wants *that* as their first 1CC?).

If you say you suck then you suck. What a stupid way to show the skill. I mean the most learn it after years one Game. But if you can one Game of the Series you can mostly the other parts after a lil bit practising! Im not good at Shmups now. I play only Strikers 1945 Plus now after this maybe this crazy Shooter Mishi bla bla xD I must play it this Game looks really crazy. And GigaWing is crazy too omg the Score System i dont understand it.I think no Bombs using is better ^^ But its a great Game. The best way to learn make after every level a Save Point and learn every Level if you know when the Enemys come then you have no Probs in the whole Game. Its only learning and and sometimes reaction but the mist is learning. :P I Learn it with the hard way. I Play and play and play. I Play on Toilet too xD But hey thats Fun the games OWNZ my Head. If i close sometimes my eyes after a crazy Game Session i see Bullets, Ships and Planes xD But hey i LOVE IT. Mr. 1-8 in Strikers 1945 Plus im Coming hrhrhrhr 1-5 is now my Stand :P After 1 MOnth only at the weekend playing!!!! So you see its not hard and Strikers is not really easy. The Difficult is in every Lever higher! Thats crazy but thats it what i need. The most new Games have n1 Graphics but you need not really Skill ;) One Question can anybody give me an quickling for GigaWing Stradegy i dont know how the Point System works xD

Slowly getting there. The eldest is 7, which is still a touch young to get to grips with games (although TF6 on "kids" mode seems OK for her).

She's getting into fighters though. Capcom fighting games are definitely on her "want to play" list now, which is great! :)
