Shooters That Would Make You Go to the Arcade?

Post by Hellfromabove »

Hey guys, this is my first post on these boards but I was wondering one quick thing. Okay, so I go to this awesome arcade called Denjin Arcade in Simi Valley, CA. It turns out that one of the owners is really really into shmups and has put in Cave shooters along with other popular ones. I think he has around 4 - 6 shmups altogether in a row. Now, I thought that it would actually attract a crowd of people to come and play the shooters which I have never seen but it just seems that they get play once in a while, it seems that the fighting games are the ones that draw in the crowds. I asked the owner and he said they are mainly there for him so he can play. What I was wondering is are there any shooters that would bring people in on a constant basis to play? Seems like a shame that those great games are just sitting there. Thanks.

they may be drawing people in...I think we lose sight of the fact due to surrounding ourselves with others into the same stuff via forums, internet, etc...shmups and to a greater degree arcade shmups are a niche market attracting a minority of people. It wouldn't matter what games he put in there. There just isn't THAT large a rabid fanbase when compared to fighters.

I actually drive an hour plus to get to Denjin Arcade, but I try and make a trek out there every couple weeks, just to play those shooters.

It's my closest option by far.

Try to convince some friends to go check it out. Who knows, they might actually like it.

I'd go to arcades if there were any in NC that had shmups... I don't really think galaga counts though :?
If more 2D people would go to the 2D Gaming Forum, there would be more people to talk about 2D games with other 2D fans on the tootie gaming forum. It's 2Dlicious. For real yall

Death Smiles? ESPGaluda? Death Smiles really has a "WOW, that looks awesome!" look about it. And ESPGaluda is really accessible. Although, you'd might wanna get the instruction-stickers translated. :D

Otherwise, Raiden III is very eyecatching since it's high res, and also something that you can just pick up and play, but is high res doable in that place?

Shooters that would make me go to the arcade? Most of them.
Shooters that would make most Americans go to the arcade? I don't know that any of them would.

Unfortunately this genre of games just doesn't have very much appeal in this country. It's a shame, but that's just the way it is.

I still haven't made it down to Denjin, but I plan to. I hit up Arcade Infinity on a regular basis for Death Smiles and Futari 1.5, though.

Unfortunately, true. Any Raiden/Raiden Fighters shmup might have a bit of name-brand appeal.

I'd spend a few dollars on Mushihime Sama Futari if it was close by. Couldn't see myself driving for more than a half hour or so for that unless the arcade had some other kind of draw. The fighting set up at denjin arcade is tempting me to do the six hour drive though, for real....not really for real, but maybe if I was in the area for something else.

Death Smiles is the only one I could fathom would have broad appeal. Its presentation is exceptional. Ought to be the first thing anyone sees when they walk into an arcade; the DDR machine will be found no matter what shadowy corner it's lodged in after all.

Vertical shooters? Any one of them, probably as appealing as a platformer to a layperson.

Death Smiles has some japanese menus, you'd need to put up some custom instruction cards for that. Other than that yeah, I can see a lot of people into it for the look.

+1 to Raiden Fighters, or some Psikyo stuff like Strikers II or Gunbird 2

Keep the feedback coming guys, it really helps. I'll make sure to forward all this to the owner since he loves shooters. You guys should have a meet up over at Denjin if you guys live around it. Also, let him know in person. The more people that let him know the faster he'll be putting these in there.

No shooter would make me go. I can buy shooters on my own so there's no real need for an arcade. Now, if there was a community there to share shooter strategies, I might be inclined to go.

But then, if I lived near Denjin, I'd go for the seemingly awesome fighter community and maybe try out SFIV, since the ported arcade fighters aren't worth it at all to purchase.

Wow, I mean I'm not that big into shooters but I do like the funny ones like Choaniki. Just saw game play on youtube for Death Smiles and I am amazed. Looks great!!! I was thinking you guys would state games like Ikaruga, Border Down, or Zero Gunner 2. Is there like a list of top 10 shooters or anything that you guys would love to see. Oh btw, there is a new arcade cab that came out that is a vert screen but its HD and 37". I'm trying to see if he can get at least one in there because man, that would be sick!!!

Raiden Fighters, Outzone and Zero Gunner 2 make me go to the arcade because those are the only shmups at any of the arcades around me, haha.

For the shmup fan I would say put a Ketsui machine and a Mushi Futari & Muchi Muchi Pork machine.

Same, except I have transportation problems.

Arcade Infinity sounds nice, but I'd be labeled legally insane if I tried the 3/4 hour walk (1/2 for Golfland apparently is too much already.)

To answer this could imply that I had any worthwhile arcades in my area (Buffalo, NY). I don't.

That said, I'd definitely go to an arcade to play some DoDonPachi or Mars Matrix.

Tis a shame that no indy arcade exists in the Central Valley area...it would do quite well if stocked with the latest and greatest from Japan. You'd think with such big Japanese population in the San Francisco area, that'd there be such a Japanese arcade but there isn't one.

At least once a year is the California Extreme show that has the world's largest gathering of such classic 1980's arcade game cabinets and pinball games. Even the latest pinballs from Stern was shown at the CAX '08 show. And if you brought enough cash or a credit card, you could even take home a brand new & boxed Stern pinball table...feel like spending a possible 5 or 6 grand in one swoop? ^_~

I was driving about thirty minutes one way every weekend-or-so to go play Deathsmiles over the summer. Fall got busy though.

Though I should probably mention my "arcade" is an anime store with three cabs in the back.

I would probably drive that far to try out Futari and MMP. If I ended up not liking either of those...Shiki II or III might get me to come back every few weeks.

OH. That System 16C board of Fantasy Zone II. Yeah...I know. But if it was at all possible, I would definitely drive out to an arcade to play that.

Anything that isn't a Raiden game, that's all I've ever seen in arcades.

I'm thinking either ESPgaluda 2 or Ketsui would probably do it.

When I read this topic I assumed you meant what would draw in normal people and not what dedicated shmuppers would want to see. If you want to appeal to people who are way into shmups then probably any Cave game of the last 10 years, the newer the better, would draw in more folks. ESP Galuda 1 is probably the best value at a decent price.

i have the games people seem to want see in arcades...ie. ketsui, futari....deathsmiles by the spring hopefully....waht would get me out to the arcade is a community....

as it stands the few of us that make up the shmup community here are content to meet at my house and play on my cabs

arcades are meant to bring people together to play....if i wanted to play by myself i would stay home....and i do

we could go to the arcades and play (not necessarily newer cave titles obviously)....but when i have better cabs and games at home and play is free.....arcades seem kinda pointless
