Best master system games???
Best master system games???
Can anyone recommend me some good Sega Master System games? I have a particular interest in 2d platformers, but anything you think is good is fair game.
I've always wanted to check out more games for this system but really haven't had a chance. Pretty much the only game I've ever put any time into was Wonderboy 3 - the dragon's trap.
Edit: My friend had this game, a horizontal space shmup, where 2 players could play cooperatively, one of them would move the ship and the other one would aim. I remember there was usually a planet in the background of the graphics. What is that game?

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I heard the Star Wars SMS game is pretty good. Very Zelda-ish, but a bit hard on the platformer stages.
The Golden Axe and Altered Beast ports are quite good, considering the System. Space Harrier 3D is the best 3D game out there. Also try:
Power Strike.
Power Strike 2.
R-Type.
Kenseiden.
New Zealand Story.
Rastan (Epic port, IMHO)
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Indeed, Astro Warrior is a lot of fun. The hi-score thread could use some more action.
Other goodies:
- Aztec Adventure
- Black Belt / Hokuto no ken
- Choplifter
- Enduro Racer
- Fantazy Zone I & II
- Gain Ground
- Phantasy Star (if you're playing this one, make sure to get the english retranslation patch. Makes the game 10x more fun)
- Wonder Boy in Monsterland

LOLS, I had post pretty much the same games in the professor's thread!
Also, I forget about 'Master of Darkness'. I have played this on the emulation and it is a nice game in the [traditional] Castlevania style of design.

It's an excellent classic RPG, and easily the best version of Ultima IV available. You'll need a lot of time on your hands to really appreciate it, though.Ruldra wrote:What do you think of this game? It looks like a good one, but after a friend of mine told me what you need to do to finish it, and after seeing the world map (HUGE!), I promptly gave up.Mortificator wrote:Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar

There was a Bubble Bobble port as well to the SMS, but not sure if it was an official release, or a Brazilian release, much truer to the arcade than the NES port.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/merftyc86w4pt ... n.txt?dl=0 My game collection so far
Bomber Raid- A nice 1942-like shmup
Choplifter- Faithful port of the arcade game.
Dragon Crystal- Action hack 'n slash, sequel to Fatal Labyrinth on the Genesis
Fantasy Zone- Colorful, unexpectedly tough cutesy shmup.
Fantasy Zone II- Bigger sequel with a gameplay twist.
Fantasy Zone: The Maze- Surprisingly fun Pac-Man clone.
Ninja Gaiden- Little known, stand alone entry to the NES series. Much easier, but still fun.
Phantasy Star- Best 8-bit RPG IMHO.
Power Strike- Fun shmup by Compile.
Power Strike- Even better sequel.
Rampage- A faithful arcade port. Better than the NES version.
Rastan- A surprisingly good port of the arcade classic, with a hidden 9th level.
Sagaia- An unexpectedly good port of Darius II.
Shinobi- A good port of the famous arcade game.
Sonic the Hedgehog- Very good platformer, that's different from the Genesis game.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2- And even better sequel, that's also different from the Genesis version.
Sonic Chaos- A Master System original entry, and a good one too.
Spellcaster- An action RPG that's a lot of vun.
Ys: The Vanished Omens- A good classic JRPG.
Zillion- Fun action game.
Zillion II: The Tri Formation- Equally fun sequel.
Choplifter- Faithful port of the arcade game.

Golvellius, pretty much singlehandedly, taught me the ever-so-important lesson that RPGs suck as a genre.
R-Type, however, is the rock of freaking Gibraltar on that system. Getting to, memorizing, and being able to get through Super Stage on that game just stinking *rules*.

Bubble Bobble was certainly released in the UK for the SMS and isn't too bad iirc.Bloodreign wrote:There was a Bubble Bobble port as well to the SMS, but not sure if it was an official release, or a Brazilian release, much truer to the arcade than the NES port.
Edit: Oh and Psycho Fox is great (as mentioned above)

Golvellius is okay. Not much of an RPG (the SMS has very few true RPGs). However, a much better action/adventure Zelda-esque adventure is Golden Axe Warrior for the SMS.boagman wrote:To quote "Memento": "Don't believe his lies."Strider77 wrote:Golvellius

Psychic World - one of my favorite games on the Master System.
If you're interested in it, check out this vid. Just ignore the retarded guy commenting on it.

It's a butchered port from the MSX version but still very enjoyable.
EDIT: Would love to see Rob's take on that guy's review...

If, by "okay", you mean "patently, nigh-indescribably lousy", then yes: Golvellius is *very* okay.Andi wrote:Golvellius is okay. Not much of an RPG (the SMS has very few true RPGs). Yike. It's one of the very few titles that I honestly fully regretted buying for the system back in the day.
