I love shmups...but i can't get access to many
Hello to all,
You know it's great to find others like you,so i want to say thank you all for not making me feel so alone in this style of gaming. Here is my one question for all:
The consoles released since the NES have had shmups of some kind on it,the SNES and PS2 being the most accessable. So how do you get all these other games? I hear you guys talking about games i've never heard on a console i can even find.Do you guys mod your consoles, how much does something like this cost?Where can i find shmups that will come stateside, the Wii is becoming the new console for shmups but i just can't get one for some time. Thanks for any help or recommendations.

You also have a great amount of freeware PC shooters like Kenta Cho games, ChoRenSha68k or Warning Forever. All you need is a USB pad and you are good to go. Oh, and the truckload of Mame shooters that can keep you entertained for ages.
For PS2, you have Raiden III and Shikigami No Shiro 3, I think both got US ports. Look especially for Raiden III, it not only rocks but it's cheap.
Continuing with the PS2 stuff, you have Gradius V and R-Type Final, both also quite accessible. See if you can request them at your closest game store.
There is also Psyvariar 2 (also cheap, someone even got it for $15) and Shienryu Explosion (not sure with this one though).
However, I do agree some stuff should be ported to the US, like Thunder Force VI...

NOW REACHES THE FATAL ATTRACTION BE DESCRIBED AS "HELLSINKER". DECIDE DESTINATION.
MAME is definitely the way to go to get your feet wet. Most games up through the year 2002 work in it.
You're talking about a genre that was created specifically for arcades. Most of the games on consoles are actually just arcade ports.
Check out any game by Cave, Raizing, Psikyo, and Takumi, and you should be happily surprised.
(But mostly Cave
)
Also, as Observer said, there are some good freeware shmups. I can vouch for all the ones he mentioned, but also wanted to add: Blue wish Resurrection, and Flew fighter. You can find those and plenty more here:
http://shootthecore.moonpod.com/
You will find some good games, but in general, they are not as high quality as commercial arcade releases.

I have MAME and a (now) very cheap modded ps2...
Some jap titles for the ps2 from play asia, others from .torr(ent) since unavailable on the market nowadays (and this sucks..cause I want a damn original Ibara with all the polished lolis on display on the dvd case)
Im getting a jap 360 soon to play (finally) Ketsui.
I have a DS with Ketsui death label (original)...
In the future I plan to get a PCB of something....we'll see...maybe Daifukkatsu

Well, modding your PS2(or using Swap Magic, which I can't vouch for, since i've never used it), will open you up to a lot of PS1 classics and some pretty cool PS2 games. So that would be a great place to start. I like modded systems, since it's less of a hassle.starsolider76 wrote:Hello to all,

But I can't stress enough: MAME! I use MAME32FX, since it's less complicated than your normal MAME.
There are so many awesome shmups on there that you can get for free. Contact me with a PM, and I can give you some advice of where to get started.

For domestic PS1 and 2 games, you can't beat Gradius V, R-Type Delta, Einhander, and G Darius.starsolider76 wrote:Here are the ones i researched for ps1 and ps2:

Now, if you get Swap Magic or whatever, you can have access to one of the all time greats Do DonPachi. Amazingly popular here.
Also, if and when you are able to play Japanese games, you could check out Gradius Gaiden and ESP Galuda. Another game which is awesome is Soukyugurentai. It's supposed to be not as good looking as the Saturn version, but if you can only get the PS version, it's certainly worth getting.
Here's a good link to a lot of reviews and overviews of PS1 shmups:

Hope you are able to get into our awesome hobby.
EDIT: In answer to an earlier question, I just bought another modded PS2, and it cost me about 225 without shipping. In terms of just modding the system you own. I don't know

What are you using right now to read and post on this forum? MAME works pretty well on old computers as long as it isn't ancient or anything. It's not like Shmups are graphically intensive or require powerful rigs.starsolider76 wrote: I can't think of any beyond these. Ebay used to have good deals on shmups but I'm afraid that you are a little late on the boat. Most of them are going for high prices now thanks to all the recognition they are getting as of late.
Case in point, Gradius V sold NEW for 20 dollars and you could find it on ebay for around 15 dollars new. Now the best you can do is get it used on ebay for about 26 dollars counting shipping. I bought my Ikaruga copy used for 20 dollars now they are around 70 dollars used.
Ebay is no longer a good place for bargains.

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Yeah, it's a fantastic place for the patient folks. I generally get far better deals on eBay than here even. Just gotta wait a few extra weeks/months/years, which obviously not everyone is willing to do (nor should they be expected to).Pixel_Outlaw wrote: Ebay is no longer a good place for bargains.

That is true, but let us just say that it seems tha people are no longer trying to get rid of unwanted games and are looking at what people are willing to pay more. I would say that the bargains are fewer and further between but they do pop up on occasion.Ganelon wrote:Yeah, it's a fantastic place for the patient folks. I did get a nice Ikaruga copy for about 20€, myself, and this was... last June, I think. So there are still affordable deals around. You just need patience, and a little bit of luck. I would still recommend checking eBay first when trying to get a game - it takes little time, and you might get a good deal.Pixel_Outlaw wrote:Ebay used to have good deals on shmups but I'm afraid that you are a little late on the boat. hey buddy
Seems a lot of the users here have posted some good information on helping you get started.
here's my contribution:
Google Searches:
HD Loader
ESR
Swap Magic
MAME
Emulation
I play my PS2 games on my PS2 with an HDD. If my games don't work on HDD I use ESR to patch it almost like memor but it's free and you can easily download it.
I'll have to rip my games on PC then transfer it over to HDD or I copy and patch my games and run it on my PS2.
Dreamcast I have a Rodolf boot disc and some other boot disc.
My Sega Saturn I have a 4 in 1 which allows me to play imports.
As for the PSX shooters, I use ePSXe it's a Playstation Emulator, works great and it's free download. It looks a whole lot better than the original Playstation and there are less slowdowns on games too.
and of course, Genesis/Mega Drive SNES/Super Famicom stuff don't really require any sort of mod. Exception of the N64 I have to cut out plastic to make sure the import Carts fit in properly.
Emulation is also great, MAME has a wide selection of great shooters just do a bit of searching, you'll have to work hard at it as there will be a lot of information for you to digest.
Hope that helps

like many others said, MAME is your friend here... i (re)started my pasion for shmups with it, since it introduced me to games i never even heard of...
when it comes to PS1 shmups, i play'em on my PSP... some off torrents, some backed up by myself.
mod your PS2... it will open a new world for you ... im amazed with that... playin that many imports its priceless (but you need to focus in the ones you like, or you wont master any of'em).
and last but not least, PC games (commercial or doujin...) theres a real overwelming ammount of shmups there that you wont be able to play'em all in a couple life times... but if you narrow the list to the good ones, with all off the above you have enough games til your great grand sons make you a great great grand pa.
to tell you the truth, im affraid i wont be able to play all of the games i wanna play (on the doujin side), because of lack of time, and too many games on queue (3 portable consoles, and a DC, PS2 and X360 dont give you enough free time you know!?)

Re: I love shmups...but i can't get access to many
In my opinion the best STGs playable in the world right now are Mushihimesama Futari (1.5 or Black Label), and Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu. But both of them were never ported to any system and you basically have to pay over 1000€ to get them (in the form of a PCB), + spend the money to get an arcade cabinet or supergun at home. It's not really worth it unless you are rich.starsolider76 wrote:I hear you guys talking about games i've never heard on a console i can even find.Do you guys mod your consoles, how much does something like this cost?
