We share a very similar approach to shumps my friend.

LOL, Recap gets no credit for his ideas...electricgrave wrote: I abide by the no continue rule to no end now, I started not long ago, perhpas 3 or 4 years now. Somewhere along the net I read something quite profound about the "No continue rule" and it was kind of weird 'cause in a way I was on my way to eventually play that way, 'cause something inside of me was missing when I was playing this games, so I was looking for that something, but it was morelike this piece of read found me and pretty much solved that missing link to the next level of playing.
Now thanks to shmups I play all my games that way and I have learned to apprecciate them so much more because of this, so thanks to that person for the inspiration, I honestly can't recall where was this.

Well, there you go! Thanks Recap! I just wasn't sure were I read this thing from, but it was quite insightfull. However; I don't think it was solely an idea of his if I recall correctly. The read mentioned that this idea was something he learned from a japanese arcade as he was visiting while watching causal gamers play.Ganelon wrote:LOL, Recap gets no credit for his ideas...

It pretty much takes as much time to get better at a shmup as it does to finish an RPG for me. I know I suck and I pretty much rely on watching better players owning the game in order for me to figure out what the hell I'm doing wrong. I did that playing Death Smiles, last time I was in Japan. I only played that game for a couple of days, while watching others play it.

Play the Shmups like your other Games and you are on the Same Skill! The Games are really easy! The most Shmups habe some small bugs that can help you! The most Shmups shoot at the Position where you are! So Move slow and you will geht better scores! Vertical Shooters are not like Gradius 3 ^^ And the last point learn learn learn. ^^ I love the games i play only Strikers 1945 Plus but this Game is so great! I played it now only at the weekend on my best Friends PSP! And im at Stage 1-5 now without using a Bomb if im conentrated ^^ The Concentration is really importan play the games like an Shooter like Fallout 3 and you will see you are better and better and after a couple of Days or Weeks you are a Master!

No. Try playing for score... lots of people here can loop these games and make huge scores in the process.TripleA wrote:Play the Shmups like your other Games and you are on the Same Skill! Ah, then that was icycalm, who first heard about this from Recap. Incidentally, both don't have access to this forum anymore.electricgrave wrote: Well, there you go! Thanks Recap! Yeah, I have been a bit of a shmup fan since my childhood, but I suck immeasurable amounts, probably helped by the low amount of them I managed to come across.
About the only games I've been able to 1CC are the Touhou series (save SA, which still kicks my ass), Gradius III in the SNES (which is so pitifully easy I don't even count it), R-Type DX in the GBColor (I was ten at the time, so I don't think that one's that bad)... and that's it. I'm trying for Ikaruga and my old copy of Axelay, but to no avail yet. Well, gotta keep trying.

Also a fan of Gradius, R-Type and the likes but, for me, the king was Raiden. Then Xevious, 1942 and one old MSX shooter that always kicked my ass... Well, all the games kicked me.
I still feels I suck a lot at most of the old arcade games. I can 1cc many of the most recent titles but for the oldies... I am still trying with DoDonPachi. I can make it to Stage 5 but then I panic bomb or go crazy and get my ass handed at Stage 6.

NOW REACHES THE FATAL ATTRACTION BE DESCRIBED AS "HELLSINKER". DECIDE DESTINATION.

A site where I get to learn about good shmups and talk with people who actually know the genre? The question is, after you told me of it, why would I waste time in joining?SockPuppetHyren wrote: You wasted no time joining this site did ya?
Also, on your recommendation, I just downloaded the demo for Diadra Empty. Seems awesome, but now I have to find a translated manual or something because I don't understand anything. Same with the Hellsinker demo, too - weird menu there. As I finish typing this, I'll go pray to Google and see if it blesses me with something.
A-yup. I'm easy to convince when it comes to apparently awesome games.Observer wrote:hahaha, so the brainwashing at Poosh worked? =P
Ah, Xevious. Yeah, tried that one as well when I was very young. Needless to say, it kicked my ass into next year.Observer wrote:Also a fan of Gradius, R-Type and the likes but, for me, the king was Raiden. I am the suck.
I am known as the worst player of these forums (far worst than Worstplayer, more magnetized to bullets than Bullet Magnet
)
I cannot 1cc anything that came out after 16-bit generations. My score is in last place if I can even place on capped boards…
Oh well…
I have fun as I do what I enjoy to do.

Yes what better way to perpetuate the genre then indoctrinate them at birthZeroblade wrote:jonny5 wrote:Yeah, I found that Touhou seems to have forced me to not bomb as my score would get totally screwed over.captpain wrote: this is my biggest problem.....i hate bombing....i rather die than bomb usually...even when i should bomb.....
i dont suck...i just dont bomb![]()
if i bombed occasionally i would get further.....but i would feel less manly for doing so
And elvis, even better idea: teach your kinds the wonderfulness of shmups so you can practice and spend time together as a family.
Im being only slightly serious but my 7 year old is way into Batsugun and Battle Garegga. Granted she can't remember the names of them but she knows what she likes.
Oh and those who have actually 1cc'ed a game do NOT belong on this thread;) I haven't even come remotely close to 1ccing ANYTHING and I've actually tried a few times. I <3 continues
It’s almost over. It’s just begun.

I definitely suck at shmups, actually until recently i thought i was somewhat decent (i'm originally a hardcore fighting game player and only played shumps at friend's like one time per month for a few credits) but then when i got an egret 2 at home, thanks to the easy rotation i thought "why not buy a cave to give it a try as i don't have many competition for fighting game at home anyway".
So i started to search for something to buy, i made a short list with games i played and liked and some i didn't and wanted to try, after missing some "damn i'm always too late" sales (lol too late for 2 DFK in 2 days) i finally got my hands on a MMP.
So during the time i was waiting for the game to get home, i read the startegy guide on cave-STG and watched vids to get how this game is played. Before that, i never really played for score and was happy with surviving, but for my first shmup at home i wanted that to change and try to play how it's supposed to.
That's when i realised how much i suck, when scoring it's a totally different thing and i don't go anywhere as far in the game. But i enjoy it a lot more now, before i thought shumps were kinda cool but nothing more, now i play everyday and maybe one day i might not suck so much anymore
