It was released across Europe as a budget title (around 10 - 20 Euros) in "hardcopy" form. Later on it appeared on several European PC game magazine discs. I think I even remember a website selling a Japanese "hardcopy" version also though I don't have the link anymore. The Coop wrote:Nope. Doesn't look like the game got much of a release, if it actually got one at all. DLing it would seem to be the only way to get it.happyED wrote:Can't i buy the game and get a "hardcopy" ?

The game is not ruined, it just forces you to chain aggressively.DarkMoon wrote:yea my friend found a free DL of the game and gave it to me.
This shit is tough... Perfect way to ruin a great game by under powering the weapons.
4x combo gives you a power up for primary weapon, 6x combo = extra smartbomb, 8x combo = one more hitpoint. If you don't play offensive you'll die very quickly.

I bought this game from Amazon.de upon it's initial release. The game plays very well on a modest PC config, with a mix of pre-rendered and drawn graphics which all scale and rotate, as well as the screen shifting angle every now and then. Definitely one of the prettiest bit-mapped shooters.
The gameplay is fairly typical 'euroshmup' style, with a full size hit-box and an energy bar. The ship also carries a bit of inertia which is a bit annoying. It is pretty tough going as others have mentioned but is fun too.

Heh i assumed all versions had cheats, but i guess maybe it just came with the pirated version i tried. It was something like F2-F7 for turning on/off different kinds of cheats.
People nowadays are just not used to hardcore euroshmups any more...pussies
Here the cheat - should work with every version, not just the pirated copy...
While at the main menu, enter "ciyyico" quickly. When done properly you should hear a clicking sound. Now you can start the game with all weapons and unlimited lives.

Play the game with unlimited weapons & smart bombs, it quite fun.
Interesting, when I seached gamefaqs & ign for cheats I never came across this code! While at the main menu, enter "ciyyico" quickly. When done properly you should hear a clicking sound. Now you can start the game with all weapons and unlimited lives.
Where did you find it?

Yes, I'm sure. Just tried it, worked (you start out with all three secondary weapons and unlimited lives, no game over after lives counter reaches zero). I'm playing the german version and using a german keyboard, so you might want to try "cizzico" if you're using an US/UK keyboard.
Sorry about that, haven't thought about the different keyboard layouts.

Weird, could not find this thread with the forum search. Sorry for the double thread.

Yep, I've still play it from time to time and I'm pretty sure that the underpowered weapons you start with are an intentional design choice to enforce an aggressive kamikaze playstyle.mjclark wrote:Wow-just got the full version of this today and it's soooo pretttyyyy

Glad to see this pretty little euroshmup gem still finding new players

...and you can buy the hardcopy from Medimops too: http://www.medimops.de/Ceph wrote:I did some googling, Amazon Germany is selling hardcopies of Steel Savior for 10 EUR. (Not sure if they'll ship abroad).
They do worldwide delivery-I'm in UK and it cost me £5.01 for the game and postage!!!!
This game reminded me of Megaman in the sense that, like in them, you have to 1cc everything once you reach a certain point. (in this case, Chapters 3, 4 and the last one). It is no easy task and it takes over 30+ mins to do it! Go tell that to Cave.
It also gets way too hectic towards the end so be ready to lose lives and keep fighting aggressively. It also encourages strategic bombing to go through the worse and dodge the rest. Those damn spinning enemies of Chapter 4 spraying green bullitz all around the screen... Go back to Touhou (hey, they remind me of the spinning yin-yang orbs
), I don't want to deal with bullet hell when I'm already dealing with euroschmukmup stuff!
Huge hitbox is huge, I'm still sweating but, yeah, I finally cleared Steel Saviour. It's really unfriendly and brutal for the unprepared and the ending is hilarious but I really liked it. Surreal awesomeness ftw. Oh, yeah, spoilers:

To the final boss: DIE DIE DIE! How many times I have to kill you????
btw, the final boss is amazing. The camera also takes the drunkard route and moves a bit here and there as you keep pounding this thing that doesn't even fit the screen.
edit: and I swear Chapter 4 has to last 20 mins or something... It's way way too long. Such a length should be forbidden in shooters. But it's an awesome Gradius homage. The boss absolutely rocks!

That boss looks cool. I really like how they move the camera about like that, making you fly on an angle from time to time. I haven't played it though, does it affect manouvering at all?

And that's just the last form, the previous are also quite impressive. It's a pity the game is so damn hard and euroschmukppy because the designs pour love and awesomeness and surely they saved the best for the end. The final battle feels fierce and frantic without 2000 bullets on screen.emphatic wrote:That boss looks cool. Regarding the camera movement: there is one point during the final boss where it almost goes top-down... Personally I was too busy chaining and dodging to care but it doesn't seem to affect your maneuvering. The ship is a mammoth already.
Oh, and beware of Chapter 4 as it has plenty of bullshit moments, especially some 'air waves' that will pull your ship downwards or upwards with incredible strength while enemies that fire guided bullets keep appearing. Guided missiles+bomb.
Add the fact that it has 3 midbosses/huge enemies before the real boss...
