finally got a Jap MegaDrive

Post by professor ganson »

Couldn't resist during the latest Play-Asia sale. So, who here is a fan of the system? What games do you recommend? And any advice in hunting titles down? I have quite a few of the games released in the US and a few imports released on the Wii's VC. The only import cart I have is Twinkle Tale, which seems terrific so far. Non-shmup recommendations welcome, though I'm thinking of this as mainly on topic.

I do like SoR 3, the only one I've played. Very nice game.

I hear a lot about Ristar. I'll have to check that out. Thanks!

I just acquired Undead Line on eBay. It was probably overpriced a bit, but I'm guessing that Twinkle Tale and Undead LIne are the two MD games that I most need to have, judging from the pics and videos I've seen.

VV
Gunstar Heroes
Tatsujin
Eliminate Down
Musha Aleste
Zero Wing
Hellfire
Kyuukyoku Tiger
Same Same Same
Contra: The Hard Corps
Vampire Killer
Ristar - Shooting Star
OutRun 2019
Super Fantasy Zone
Granada
Sonic 1-3, Knuckles
Pulseman
RocketKnight Adventures
Snow Bros
Thunder Force III, IV
Quackshot
Gynoug

and many more, but this list alone will cost you a fortune. ^-^

How about creating a topic you-know-where* for the non-shmup recommendations? ;)

Gleylancer is ok if you don't mind how easy it is (think TF3/Musha).

Battlemania 2.

Highly recommended:

-Musha Aleste
-Thunderforce III
-Thunderforce IV
-Hellfire
-Contra Hard Corps

...this is my Top Five

also great Games:

-Gunstar Heroes
-Alien Soldier
-Gynoug
-Elemental Master
-The Super Shinobi

Ristar is not a bad Game but the Japanese Version is expensive and not worth the high price!
Same with Eliminate Down, one of the better Shmup but not worth the high price. It reminds me on Hellfire(Gameplay),this one is the better one in my opinion, but it`s a matter of taste!
Gleylancer,same "problem".
All of them are good Games but found it overpriced. You will collecting all of them?Get it and have fun!

A great buy on the Japanese MD! Twinkle Tale is truly amazing. Undeadline is cool and very oldschool, but man, it's punishingly hard. :)

Gleylancer on the other hand is quite easy, yes, but it also very fun because of that. Eliminate Down is technically/gameplay-wise awesome, but getting past level 3 on one credit proves to be rather difficult. It's a beautiful game though, that plays like a charm.

Alien Soldier's my favourite Treasure game by a stretch, which you might have played on the VC. Contra is head and shoulders above its US counterpart, mostly because you get a health bar that can take 3 hits before you actually die, which makes the game actually possible and fun. Highly recommended.

Must have not listed yet :

Crying / Bio Hazard Battle : great original horiz shmup with an aquatic theme and wonderful music which fully uses the md synth midi.
Kuuga: Operation Code "Vapor Trail" : basic but fun port
Midnight Resistance : the only port needed to play this classic run n gunner
Slap Fight MD : 2 games in one, the original arcade one and a full new game unique to the system (with music from Koshiro). pricey but worth it..
Senjou no Ookami II / MERCS : the port is downgraded to the system power but there's a new mode also unique to the system. New stages, 1 credit only but you get soldiers you can swap anytime during the run.

already mentionned but great nonetheless :

Granada : classic wolfteam magic to its fullest.
Kyuukyoku Tiger : harder port than the pc engine one but it sadistically pushes you to play another credit.
Musha Aleste: Full Metal Fighter Ellinor : classic vert which sometime remind me of battle garegga due to its design and the weapon upgrade.
Same! Same! Same! : simple toaplan fun

I second this!

EDIT: And I think Koutetsu Teikoku (AKA Empire Of Steel in PALland and Steel Empire in NTSCworld) is a great shooter that never gets enough credit...

Herzog Zwei is good stuff. Oddly enough, the MD version is in English and seems to sell for cheaper than the US version. As far as I could tell, the game itself is exactly the same.

Daisenpuu is inexpensive and great fun.

Alien Soldier is expensive, but well worth the price. However, it's also on the Wii VC and in a collection on JPS2 for cheaper.

I'm glad to hear that Twinkle Tale is first-rate. Undead Line sounds scary, and that's a good thing.

I was playing Gley Lancer last night on the VC, and at first it seemed same-old, but it really caught on after a bit. I'm definitely going to spend more time with it.

I've played only a few minutes of Alien Soldier, and it seemed a bit hard to get comfortable with the controls. I should go back to it someday.

I've always wondered why the Japanese version of Contra was in higher demand. Now it makes sense.

I think Eliminate Down is the main title that I'll be looking for in the future. I think I've only heard good things about this one. :)

The Jap MD is my favorite console of all time.

There were great suggestions so far, I will only repeat what people posted....

As far as exclusives go, you can't go wrong with Eliminate Down, Battlemania 2 and Slap Fight. Unfortunately for all of us, these are some of the most expensive ones to get.

Maybe you'll also dig Fire Mustang. It's a very short and loopable game with great use of parallax scrolling. Verytex is kinda cheap but has an amazing soundtrack - the BGM for stage 1 is epic!

If you don't mind the absence of the AYBABTU bullshit of the PAL version, you can also get Zero Wing, one of my favorite games of all time. It starts easy, but builds up a lot in difficulty in the last stages. The soundtrack is simply amazing.

You must purchase Shinobi III you must! The music is some of the best ever composed.

Oh and Gaiares will make a man out of you. Hellfire is also good. I like Whip Rush but I may be the only one.

The Sonic games are all pretty good, believe it or not there was a time when SEGA made good Sonic games, hell he was even their mascot.

Hmmm perhaps an entire community should not take the words of a single reviewer as gospel?

Phantasy Star II (and the rest of the series), but really, I have little to add beyond what others have said.

I scare myself saying this, but Aladdin is a freaking beautiful game. Absolutely fluid, giant spritework. :D

Some good stuff on the Mega CD too - lots better than the NA CD stuff, from what little I know about the subjects. :)

EDIT: DUH STRIDER!!!! OUTRUN!!! :D :D :D :D :D

I have really fond memories of playing this, but I thought they must have been misguided memories of youth as surely Aladdin can't be good?! Maybe I was actually right - I might have to dig this out again...
